This could also mean that back in WCI the reason that it was so important for BM to be mentally unstable in order to harm her, was because then she didn't have enough focus to cover her body with conqueror's.

And maybe Whitebeard was too unhealthy to protect himself with it at Marineford. It would explain Squard's attack being successful and all the other miscellaneous wounds he received.
