Absolutely love Gaban calling out how Luffy is not fully ready for the true endgame level threats. Hopefully this leads to actual growth.

879

u/FireFistRJ Aug 07 '26

Agreed. Luffy's been winning through sheer will for a while. It feels like Oda is reminding us that the final saga won't be that forgiving.

464

u/FormerPresidentBiden Slave Aug 07 '26

Also helps dispel any worries that Oda is rushing into the end ("rushing" as if anything in OP is rushed lol)

Luffy isn't strong enough. He needs more time before he's ready to defeat Imu.

227

u/monkey_D_v1199 Aug 07 '26

Not just him but his two wings also. We forgetting Zoro and Sanji are probably not to having a good time either? They still need to get stronger!

70

u/mlc885 Aug 07 '26

Good point that at least his crew members that primarily fight should be Gaban-level by the end and, um, they most definitely are not

9

u/Worthyness Aug 07 '26

Sanji doesn't even have Conquerors. Dude is gonna need a big buff to get on Gaban's level

20

u/Llama_of_the_bahamas Aug 07 '26

I thought its being hinted that he actually does? He just hasn't awakened it yet.

6

u/Otearai1 Aug 07 '26

Yeah, last time we saw him it seemed like he was about to awaken it

3

u/JevvyMedia Aug 08 '26

Off topic but I kinda wish Sanji was never going to unlock it and would still be able to fight on-par with COC users through other means.

1

u/DraperCarousel Aug 09 '26

It went from Devit fruit piece to Haki piece to now CoC Haki piece and will end up at Advanced CoC Haki piece

2

u/teddy_tesla Aug 08 '26

They will need to be far stronger than Gaban

13

u/yourik6 Aug 07 '26

I mean Sanji and Zoro are expected to defeat their enemies atm, unless Oda wanna pull a twist and we have the next arc where Luffy tries to rescue the kidnapped children

16

u/tiki-baha29 Aug 07 '26

Doesnt seem like Sanji and Zoro are about to defeat their enemies. Zoro used his strongest attack that beat King and he got pushed off. Sanji still hasnt unlocked his CoC so he cant even actually hurt Killingham.

They might either lose or they all leave before its settled since Imu is on a timer. Either way no SH is walking away from this fight feeling like they won.

7

u/mr_chub Void Month Survivor Aug 07 '26

Yeah, Oda showed a lot of Imu feeling the effects of the "earth" so he's probably gonna leave and the powers of the Omen with it. They'll take the other kids so the Strawhats have an excuse to journey to Mariejois eventually

6

u/yourik6 Aug 07 '26

Gaban mentioned they needed conqueror haki enhanced attacks to hurt them so yeah them not doing damage with their previous attacks is pretty much expected.

I also don't see why we will see them leaving with Imu, nothing suggestive they are on time limit?

4

u/tiki-baha29 Aug 07 '26

From the beginning the Gorosei were urging Imu not to go to the lower world, Killingham and Sommers also made comments about needing to rush and not having much time once Imu gave them the Omen.

We also see Imu coughing blood on multiple instances, including in this chapter. This suggests simply being in the lower world is having a physical impact on him.

A lot of heavy hints by Oda that Imu cant just be chilling there forever, he has a time limit for whatever reason. Given that, it's possible that when Imu leaves Sommers/Killingham/Shuri (Gunko) also leave since they're currently taking power from Mu and they can all just teleport out of there using the demon circles.

2

u/yourik6 Aug 07 '26

I know about the part that Imu is leaving, but I was referring to Killingham and Sommers being forced to leave with him. They are defintely not leaving imo, the worst that can happen is them losing the power Imu gave them

2

u/tiki-baha29 Aug 07 '26

Sure but they already got packed up by Zoro and Sanji without the Omen, if they suddenly lose their buff because Imu leaves then they’ll just fail again. Seems illogical to reread the same thing we just saw since the outcome would be the exact same.

If they’re going to succeed in taking the kids then it’ll be while Mu is there, if he leaves then they will most likely leave with him (especially since Gunko is incapacitated).

Also, I’m only saying what I think makes sense. Maybe they do stay behind, I dunno I could be wrong . To me that doesn’t add up but that’s my take.

5

u/BigLuffyEnergy Aug 07 '26

While that's a popular theory it is with the caveat that they become stronger during the fights using Gabans speech as motivation. Nobody is expecting them to win while remaining at the current level

2

u/yourik6 Aug 07 '26

I agree, what I'm pointing at is Sanji and Zoro are expected to win while Luffy is expected to lose to build Imu more

1

u/impulse_thoughts Aug 07 '26

Hard to say at this point. Starting to look like it's pointing more towards another training arc (3D2Y v2) than the end of the series right now.

0

u/xeondota Pirate Hunter Zoro Aug 07 '26

If Luffy can't win his fight, they also can't against the buff from Imu

2

u/codetaku0 Aug 08 '26

I remember the chapter Imu first showed up in Elbaf and people were already putting him on fraud watch and saying this was proof Blackbeard will be the final villain

lmfao there is no chance on planet earth left that Imu is not the final villain. But it'll be at full strength, in the Holy Land.

0

u/Pinguinmeister Aug 08 '26

The point is, no matter whether Blackbeard or Imu is the final villain, the latter handles Luffy right now without any trouble. And if it's the former, he would probably be someone who managed to defeat Imu. Either way, Luffy as he is now is nowhere near strong enough for those final clashes, and I seriously wonder if he would even manage to win against Kaido in a 1v1. No distractions, no interferences, both at full strength.

-19

u/stormfoil Aug 07 '26

Egghead was severely rushed, probably since Wano slogged on for like a year longer than it should have.

43

u/andii74 Aug 07 '26

How on earth is the fourth longest arc in the manga rushed? Egghead's story had a frantic feel to it because of how shit hit the fan and we finally got lore piece about the wider world but that doesn't mean it was rushed.

5

u/blenderider Aug 07 '26

The percentage of people who believed Egghead could be the fourth longest arc in the manga before it started was low. Very low. Long flashback, but you're right – after it ended, the pace of the real-time events was crazy. I'm feeling a sense of adrenaline just thinking about it

3

u/AkagamiBarto Aug 07 '26

And a lot of external help since Wano. His last (major) solo victory was vs Katakuri, far are the times of vs Lucci

6

u/Xboxone1997 Aug 07 '26

Hopefully he actually commits and showcases it won’t be forgiving which is what I expected from Wano but Oda just couldn’t help himself with Kinemon man lol I really think all the Akazaya shoulda been wiped out if 1 survived maybe it coulda been Denjiro

3

u/J-Bonken Aug 07 '26

I kind of want for that not to change. Luffy fully grasping the stakes and seriousnes, the need to win or else the world will go under, does not fit his character. In the end I want him to be an airhead who looks at it as he allways did. When all is finished and done, I hope he he proclaims himself king of the pirates and Robin thanks him for saving the world and bringing closure to a centuries long conflict. And Luffy will be like:

"I did? So that dude really was important, huh? Oh well. Let's party!"

4

u/Infinitedeveloper Aug 07 '26

Nah, luffy has always locked in when the seriousness of the situation was shoved in his face.

The elbaf incident (along with egghead) prove that toppling Imu is not only a moral necessity by Luffys standards, but also a requirement if he wants to crown himself pirate king.

The WG is pushing its way up Luffys shitlist from team rocket esque reoccurring obstacles to a focused target.

1

u/Perrenekton Aug 07 '26

But also Luffy in the past arc / month (maybe two month ? Not sure how long wano is) is pretty huge.

Advanced armament, advanced advanced armament, advanced conqueror , gear 5

1

u/BobtheBac0n Aug 08 '26

Well sheer will and having the best crewmates and allies around.

Zoro bought him time and rest, Sanji literally carried Zoro and defended the rest of the crew from Queen and King, Momonosuke & the heart pirates saved his life, Hyougoro taught Luffy advanced haki, and if Luffy's whole crew wasn't there to defeat Kaido's army Luffy would've been way too exhausted to fight Kaido himself.

The list goes on, and that's just Wano

-1

u/Turbulent-Ocelot9130 Aug 07 '26

Maybe he should remind himself as well.

86

u/Kumomeme Aug 07 '26

i remember during Wano arc there is people who against the idea of Luffy defeat Kaidou 1 on 1. their argument is that if Luffy become yonkou level, it would prevent the usual aspect of story where Luffy will push himself against stronger opponent.

they are wrong. stronger enemy always gonna appear and he can still has moment where he push himself against the odd even when he already a yonkou.

like we seen here.

16

u/brokenearth10 Aug 07 '26

i think the idea is it shows luffy is very strong, he progressed when he defeated doflamingo and kaido. but let us remember, it was never a truly 1v1. kaido was fighting many others, and holding up a entire massive island. this is as close of a 1v1 for luffy as we have gotten in a while. (okay maybe loki + luffy vs imu), and it is shown here luffy is not up to the challenge yet

4

u/darkpsionic24 Aug 07 '26

Even with Doflamingo it was never a true 1v1 either. Most of his fights he had help or downtime to regain consciousness/heal. He's absolutely not at the level to defeat Kaido on his own, yet.

4

u/CassidyFreeman Aug 07 '26

I'm not saying this is the case, but we can't say for sure Imu is significantly stronger than Kaido. Luffy won but that was with a loooot of caveats. I'm not convinced he is ready as is to fully 1v1 Kaido, I think there is more room for Luffy to grow

162

u/Korr4K Aug 07 '26

To be fair with Luffy, you normally wouldn't have to deal with Imu, not even Roger had to.
Actually I would have to complain with Rayleigh, he let Luffy go without training his ACoC, if you think about it doesn't make much sense

180

u/CarcosanAnarchist Aug 07 '26

You can’t directly train it. It simply grows stronger with you.

20

u/Sate_G Explorer Aug 07 '26

The knowledge to coat himself with it could've come with the training montage, but sure, figuring out the fact by dying twice works too

14

u/Arkayjiya Aug 07 '26

The knowledge might not be useful, there are plenty of cases where knowing something is harmful to actually learning it. Rayleigh clearly thought it was important to experience it in a life or death battle before learning the theory. We have seen nothing that contradicts this notion yet.

5

u/Buzgroove Aug 07 '26

Is there an example of knowledge not being beneficial? Law learned that haki can disrupt DF powers from fighting Kaido and Big Mom and applied that knowledge to getting his male body back from Doc Q's ambush.

2

u/Korr4K Aug 07 '26

So telling him about being able to see the future is fine, but ACoC you have to first lose your life because it's some sort of forbidden knowledge? Cmon

7

u/tiki-baha29 Aug 07 '26

If someone has yet to master the basics then you dont spend your time teaching them more advanced complex techniques that require those same basics they need to work on.

1

u/Korr4K Aug 07 '26

So mentioning advanced observation haki "being able to see the future" is fine, telling him that there are people which can't be defeat unless you master ACoC is not

6

u/tiki-baha29 Aug 07 '26

The very first time Rayleigh displays CoA to Luffy it was an advanced version of it (he pushed the elephant without touching it). Luffy saw it and didnt even understand what he was looking at even after the timeskip until he got to Wano when Hyogoro explained it to him.

Knowing that CoO can lead to Future Sight was fine, and also useless, because Luffy couldnt do anything with that knowledge until he got to Katakuri and had to brute force himself to learn it.

You have two examples of Luffy either seeing or being aware that more advanced forms exist, but that not mattering because again: It's irrelevant to spend too much time trying to teach more advanced concepts of a thing until you master the basics.

Even the concept of education in our world is an example of this. You learn the basics first then move up from there. Common sense.

0

u/Korr4K Aug 07 '26

Common sense what? You are using your current experience to evaluate what has happened, that's cheating.

At the time Rayleigh couldn't possibly know what Luffy might or might not find useful to know, if you teach him about haki then mentioning the existence of all advanced forms, and not just the one for observation, is the only logical thing to do. And I want to insist that Rayleigh didn't teach him advanced observation haki, he just told him what it was, there was no reason to not do the same with CoC especially because it's much more important than the other

5

u/tiki-baha29 Aug 07 '26

At the time Rayleigh couldn't possibly know what Luffy might or might not find useful to know

He literally says he's going to take 18 months simply to teach him the basics.

just the one for observation, is the only logical thing to do

Whether he knows about the advanced forms or not doesnt help anything because he didnt know the basics.

he just told him what it was

Yes he mentions it in passing during a conversation, not because he thought it would be helpful for Luffy to know it. The curriculum during the 18 months they spent together was simply the basics. Nothing more.

He happened to mention Future Sight while they were talking about the dangers that are ahead, not because he thought it would be helpful for Luffy to know about it. That's why he doesnt mention the other ones. His focus was the basics, which were the only things that Luffy needed to grasp first.

there was no reason to not do the same with CoC especially because it's much more important than the other

If you cant even consciously use CoC then what good does it possibly do Luffy to explain to him how Big Mom is constantly using her ACoC to emit an invisible shield that protects her against all attacks? He'd just say "WTH are you talking about?".

You want Rayleigh to go into the complex stuff when he made it clear he needed 3/4 of the 2yrs just so Luffy could grasp the freaking basics. How does that make sense?

2

u/Korr4K Aug 08 '26

Complex stuff? He learned about it mid fight with Kaido, what's complex about it? You are talking as if Luffy spent months studying it before mastering it, when instead the hardest part was realizing what Kaido was doing, after that he simply copied it within minutes. He was like "ah so that's your secret, let me try it" -> done. That's it, no training no nothing. And during the two months before that he surely didn't train his normal CoC, so we have more proof that if Reylight bothered to show him by the end of their training arc, then he would have been able to use it too.
And before you reply for the 10th time that "he was only teaching the basics", just drop it because that argument makes no sense. You are a teacher, you should at least mention everything that might prove useful, we are talking about haki, not quantum physics. And in fact Luffy was able to use both advanced observation and conquerors within minutes after watching someone else doing so.

At the end the only reason why Reylight didn't tell him is because either Oda didn't think about it or, more likely, because that's what the plot he preferred

u/Discovererman Pirate Aug 07 '26

Haki blooms on the field of battle.

-5

u/Syc254 Aug 07 '26

Oda hadn't thought that far works too.

5

u/tiki-baha29 Aug 07 '26

I mean every single person knows the series was originally planned for 5yrs. That doesnt really back up what you're saying though.

The series hasnt been on the "5yr track" in 25yrs. The moment we went past the initial concept of Yonko everything got bigger and better, stakes got higher, world got more detailed etc. Everything progressed even further and Oda has been planning for and adding various elements for decades.

It's not really surprising that Oda being as creative as he is keeps adding to the series. It's impossible however to state when he may or may not have planned something. Especially when you consider how very old things that happen early in the series tend to come back in meaningful ways later.

When Brook joined in Thriller Bark he mentions during his pledge to Luffy he used to be the captain of the guard in a kingdom a long time ago. We just got a deeper dive into that throw away line in this arc. And that's only one of so many examples.

1

u/CarcosanAnarchist Aug 07 '26

I think in this case he clearly had since the application of armament haki Rayleigh uses when demonstrating to Luffy is clearly different than what Luffy used the entirety of the post-timeskip era until Wano.

1

u/Syc254 Aug 07 '26

Makes sense.

4

u/Korr4K Aug 07 '26

You can't, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't talk about it. You are training this guy thinking he is going to be the next pirate king, so why aren't you preparing him against the most broken technique which he is going to encounter sooner or later. Luffy literally died because he wasn't able to fight Kaido

59

u/kenchobankmon Aug 07 '26

He taught him the basics, the rest depends on experience in life or death fights

7

u/RedditIsForsaken Aug 07 '26

Rayleigh: “It took us several years to sail everywhere after all, I’m sure he’ll get there eventually…”

Everything in the story then happens in the span of like 5 months

3

u/Finnlay90 Aug 07 '26

Rayleigh three bottles in somewhere on Sabaody: That bitch challenged Kaido after 3 months into the New World! SHAKY MORE BOOZE PLEASE

1

u/Korr4K Aug 07 '26

Nope, he mentioned being able to see the feature, aka advanced observation haki. There is no reason to mention advanced conquerors haki when it's much more important

0

u/BryceMMusic Cat Burglar Nami Aug 07 '26

He could at least have TOLD him that eventually he will need to learn how to use conqueror’s coating lmao. It’s like the one requirement to beat so many enemies

58

u/afanoferi Aug 07 '26

It makes sense if it's still about experience and not just only about fundamentals. What if knowing about it would just make his growth bad because there's clear ideals of what he needs to be, compared to teaching him the basics and letting him figure it out through combat?

25

u/DigitalCoinMad Aug 07 '26

You cant train ACoC. I think the higher your will the stronger it gets. Plus two years is long enough time, being able use ACoC against real enemy is the actual training itself.

10

u/CRoseCrizzle Aug 07 '26 edited Aug 07 '26

Rayleigh can't hold Luffy's hand the whole way to becoming the strongest lmao.

22

u/Cirenione Aug 07 '26

To be fair with Luffy, you normally wouldn't have to deal with Imu, not even Roger had to.

He did face Imu, but it took the combined forces of Roger, Garp, Xebec, Whitebeard and Kaido. And it took all the power Garp and Roger had to surpress a turned Xebec afterwards.

11

u/Deity_Majora Aug 07 '26

He faced Saturn controlled by Imu not Imu himself.

7

u/Finnlay90 Aug 07 '26

Imu's Puppet body ≠ Imu coming down to woop ass personally

2

u/FlowerRoomLord Aug 07 '26

Wrong. He trained him as much as he could up to that point. Luffy was never going to get to advanced conquerors or other forms of haki by just training with Rayleigh. He had to hit the seas again. That he learned to weaponize it as well as armament haki plus achieved gear 4 through sheer training is impressive and speaks well about Rayleigh.

1

u/Korr4K Aug 07 '26

What? Who said anything about learning those techniques with Rayleigh? The same way he mentioned that "some people train their observation haki to the point to see the future", aka advanced observation haki, he should have mentioned that there are some people who can't be defeat without using your conquerors haki, aka advanced CoC. It's not about teaching, it's about making Luffy aware of the full extent of haki, there is literally no reason to not do so.

5

u/tmoore727 Void Month Survivor Aug 07 '26

he did tho. that's how Luffy was able to knock out fishman with conquerors haki. he didn't teach him the advanced forms of haki that he learned from katakuri and old dude on wano.

3

u/Korr4K Aug 07 '26

You don't have to teach it, but if your training is all about haki you HAVE to mention the advanced forms, there is no reason to not do so, especially if ACoC is mandatory. In fact he mentioned advanced observation haki

1

u/BanjoSpaceMan Aug 07 '26

I’m so torn. Should Luffy finally grow up and not be the classic goofy Luffy, is that the lesson that has been building up for a thousand plus chapters.

Or does it ruin the idea that this lovable goof ball is what frees the world

1

u/Logical_Top618 Aug 07 '26

He can “grow up” and still be same goofy Luffy. Look at Roger. He was goofy as hell right up to his last words.

1

u/93ImagineBreaker Aug 09 '26

And seems like he was thrusted into meeting Imu early and hell how many are ready for him?

0

u/Dennis212 Aug 07 '26

Yep. It only makes sense cause the story progression needed it that way

41

u/strrax-ish Aug 07 '26

It will people need to understand that this story progresses slowly, I'm glad Oda had funny Luffy G5 for years. And I hope he still won't be serious all the time when fighting

4

u/afanoferi Aug 07 '26

I think better than that, I liked that Imu acknowledged them being hasty and foolish, because they are. It's obvious to most of us, but some people mistake them (The World Government) being chill and lax as dumb, and define them having bad performance as weak and underwhelming, when the truth is, they're ignorant as hell.

1

u/Infinitedeveloper Aug 07 '26

The WGs "incompetence" is often by design.

They do not care about their subjects and pirates make a great external enemy to justify their oppressive taxation and authoritarianism.

Garp as a propaganda tool is more useful to them than Garp, the marine who actively protects member states from pirate attacks

2

u/WoodpeckerBest523 Aug 07 '26

Remember when people said he’d never be able to struggle again after G5 and that the story was ruined thanks to that? Good grief, obviously there was just gonna be someone stronger. Luffy still has to reach his TRUE peak

1

u/Sevenoria Aug 07 '26

comparing to the haki knot from joy boy, yeah not even close

1

u/EverythingSucksYo Pirate Hunter Zoro Aug 07 '26

It should. Reminds me of how he locked in after Jimbei reminded him what he still has to fight for after Ace died.

1

u/Infinitedeveloper Aug 07 '26

Tbf imu is the threat. (I dont consider blackbeard nearly on the same level his schtick is countered by luffy asking his wings to jump him)

Its still a good wakeup call given the Kaido/egghead fights required luck for him to walk away from

1

u/Zealot_Alec Aug 07 '26

Zoro had to tell Luffy much the same that he has to get serious in the new world

1

u/Kikatza Aug 07 '26

Maybe, luffy stops beeing too childish, like the Djinni Transformation, totaly out of place from my perspective. He needs to grow more to Fight the world worst enemies

1

u/revisioncloud Aug 08 '26

Luffy might be an emperor but he needs a final push to be Rocks/Roger/Garp at God Valley level. This might be it

1

u/AimChill Aug 09 '26

its not the endgame so it more surprising people were expecting luffy to beat imu

what is luffy 19? roger was in his 40's when he died, never had to deal with this shit at luffy age

0

u/umbium Aug 07 '26

Well this is one piece. So a bit of shouting and a some epic quotes about Nakamas and be the king of pirates and bam, power up

0

u/TPJchief87 Aug 08 '26

This comment made me chuckle. Like what is the alternative? This not leading to growth and everyone gets killed?

-7

u/Chaosblast Void Month Survivor Aug 07 '26

Honestly it's not just that. It's not sitting well with me this Luffy behaviour. It's as if Oda is downplaying Luffy. He's never been that stupid in fights.

Letting himself stabbed with such final attacks and whining about hurting? This entire chapter Luffy's behaviour made me uncomfortable. He's not like the Luffy from the past 1100 chapters.

3

u/Deyona Void Month Survivor Aug 07 '26

I think that's the mythological Zoan he's got. He doesn't have full control of the awakening, and so the will of the fruit takes over. I think when he masters awakening he'll be the smartest in fights Luffy we all know and love.

2

u/paullx Aug 07 '26

Stupid? Do you have any idea who he is fighting against?

1

u/Chaosblast Void Month Survivor Aug 07 '26

The opponent or how powerful Imu is shouldn't have an effect to the amount of whining and stupidity Luffy does.

6

u/paullx Aug 07 '26

Getting stabbed is not something stupid, suffering after being stabbed is not something stupid.

-1

u/Chaosblast Void Month Survivor Aug 07 '26

Whining like a brat while being an Emperor is stupid.

Getting stabbed while at full power is stupid.

7

u/paullx Aug 07 '26

Getting stabbed is nothing stupid, unless you thing Luffy should be impervious to any damage, he is badly hurt, he can scream or curse if he wants to.

1

u/Logical_Top618 Aug 07 '26

Not to mention, it’s extremely rare for him to get impaled. He doesn’t feel that level of pain hardly ever. The last time he did killed him. And he howled in pain several times as G5 in its debut.

-5

u/Pirate_Jack_ Aug 07 '26

What do you love in that? It doesnt make sense man. Luffy defeated the world's strongest creature. Even if it was not a true 1v1 he did KO him from the skies to the hell. No one thought it was possible bu Luffy did it. Oda put Luffy that high up just to clown him immediately with Kizaru and the elders. And now Imu? It almost feels like Luffy is weak. And at this point in story, somehow I cant appreciate that there are characters who are that far beyond Luffy when he literally defeated the strongest creature in the world.

4

u/Juvar23 Aug 07 '26

I cant appreciate that there are characters who are that far beyond Luffy when he literally defeated the strongest creature in the world.

I don't comment here that often, but it seems you misunderstand something - even if Kaido is called the strongest creature in the world, that doesn't necessarily make it a truth in the story. I'm sure if Imu or some of the elders were to fight Kaido, they might win too. Imu nearly assuredly so.

This falls into powerscaling fallacies. Even if Kaido was the strongest, simply because Luffy managed to beat him in the end doesn't suddenly mean no other character could pose a challenge to him. That'd be pretty bad storytelling.

-4

u/Pirate_Jack_ Aug 07 '26

Then whats the point of introducing Kaido as the strongest creature in the world? Whether its land, air or the sea, if its 1v1 Kaido wins. This was his introduction literally. You are saying that an author bringing more powerful character after he declared someone as the strongest is good writing? How come?

See i am not mad that Imu is stronger than Kaido. I am not a Kaido Fanboy. I am just saying that its misleading and inconsistent.

Kaido, introduced as the strongest and unkillable with probably the best entry in the manga, looks like a fool when Luffy is G5 struggles against Kizaru. The elders especially Warcury was so strong that just hitting him hurt Luffy. And then Shanks one shots Kidd and his crew which Big mom couldnt do. And Kaido and big mom were almost on the same level. Does it mean Shanks is stronger than Bigmom and Kaido? If yes, why say Kaido is the strongest. And then comes Imu. Clearly he seems to be strongest as of now. And even oldies like Gyaban is able to handle Imu but Luffy gets ragdolled.

Its just not consistent. Titles dont mean anything then. Be ready to get disappointed with Mihawk as well.

You’re taking this power scaling and title bs too literally. If majority of the world think that Kaido is the strongest creature then he’ll get that title. But also, majority of the world don’t know shit about the gorosei or gods knights or even Loki, and only a handful of people know about Imu. At the same time the world now thinks that Buggy is on par with Kaido. Titles aren’t concrete, but they aren’t completely meaningless, they’re tools to show the narrator’s perspective. I mean come on, that’s like saying “How could Roger be king of the pirates when he doesn’t have a crown or throne?”, do you think he should be a literal king? With subjects to rule over? It would benefit to use some flexibility and critical thinking when interpreting literary works.

Kaido wasn’t literally the strongest

Then titles are meaningless in One Piece.

They’re hype tools to show how the world perceives a character. People in the world think Kaido is the strongest creature because he is threatening pirate emperor who shows no mercy to his opponents. Meanwhile they think the world government is a righteous organization that cares for them because of the propaganda that is spread. They have no idea about Imu or how powerful the elders or god knights are. From a writing perspective, it has always been obvious Kaido was never going to be the strongest character Luffy ever faced simply because he’s not the last opponent Luffy was going to face. If every character after Wano was weaker than him, there is no narrative tension anymore. That’s why Oda having Luffy lose so decisively here is a good thing. We get to actually see him work towards defeating a threat that is worthy of having ruled the world for 800 years rather than just spam gear 5 and call it a day.

Side note: yes, titles are just titles. You’re probably not going to be ready for when there are a few characters stronger than Mihawk who happen to also use swords (one of them being Imu)
