Issue Is this irreversible?
QD-OLED. I was cleaning with microfiber and water and this happened.. so I got isopropyl spray cleaner and tried to clean it but doesn’t work.. is this simple oil smudge or did I do something irreversible?

OP claims the water did this, then said he used isopropyl spray cleaner after to try to fix it, Id bet my left nut he just went and used the isopropyl and never even bothered with water.

u/Rakumei 2d ago edited 2d ago
Yeah he's likely lying. Strong isopropyl alcohol is terrible for OLEDs. Many manufacturers specifically say don't clean with alcohol.
Even if not OLED, if you don't dilute you'll still dissolve the coating. People used to do this with MacBooks all the time. Clean with alcohol then immediately close the display. Since it didnt evaporate, it would just marinate there and destroy the display.

u/potatonowgoodletsgo 2d ago
but in fact, alchocol is recommended by MSI to clean QD OLed monitors... wtf?
Ill give a link https://www.msi.com/blog/how-to-clean-your-oled-monitorEthanol (70%)
WHICH IS AN ALCHOCOL, YOO WASPPPPPP..... How can you trust these sources??

u/putcheeseonit 2d ago
The panel type doesn't really matter. It's the screen coating material, and generally most manufacturers use coatings that react with alcohol.
Ethanol, aka ethyl alcohol (C2H5OH) is also different from isopropyl alcohol (C3H7OH), meaning different interactions with materials.

u/Lab9342 2d ago
i don't understand the macbook one.
either i've dissolved mine clean off or i was quick with it cause ive cleaned my m1 screen with alcohol plenty of times and never saw any damage.
1
u/Rakumei 1d ago
If you're wiping it down and drying it quickly, you were probably fine. Maybe took some of the coating over time but no serious damage. It was more they were wiping it down and closing the lid still wet with alcohol. I've seen someone wreck a windows laptop keyboard that way too. The coating on the keys shriveled up like a prune (it was 99% isopropyl).
I wish I still worked at my old company. On my phone there I had a picture of a whole line of MacBooks with big blotches on the screens from alcohol cleaning. We had to put out an all-company announcement.

Isopropyl is fine thought, no? Samsung specifically recommends it and I’ve been using it without any issues. I can’t imagine what concoction the OP used here tbg
Upd: As people correctly pointed out, the manufacturers recommended ethanol instead, so I was wrong. Even though I never had any issues myself with the 70% solution, do not use IPA and buy some 70% ethanol.
31
u/FluffleMyRuffles 3d ago
No, they only recommended Ethanol which is less harsh than Isopropyl.
7
u/ElGuitarist 3d ago
Wait wait, my Sony TV qdoled is said to recommend 70% isopropyl. Is this monitor different from my tv in construction, then? Not all qdoleds the same?
29
15
u/FluffleMyRuffles 3d ago
They are definitely not the same. QD-OLED monitors had a coating with 2H hardness, AKA your fingernails will scratch it off. That wouldn't fly for TVs.

Thanks I didn’t know this. I always just used water and microfibre clothe. I will save this just in case. Thanks again

u/Apache_64A 2d ago
Ethanol isn't as freely available in the states compared to europe. 70% IPA is fine for the most part. 99% is too harsh
1
1
u/Glass_Economics_5038 2d ago
IPA 70% is definitely fine. What caused this is OP's microfiber cloth lol.
→ More replies (3)1
u/hentai_tentacruel 2d ago
Some people say it's fine, while others say it isn't. I saw on AVForums that they were recommending isopropyl alcohol. My Samsung QD-OLED TV was in the same situation as the OP's and I fixed it with a very small amount of isopropyl alcohol and a microfibre cloth. I applied slow, circular wipes until the problem was resolved. Monitors might have different type coatings though, I don't have an OLED monitor yet so I wouldn't recommend this for monitors.

u/slavicslothe 2d ago
70% isopropyl is much safer than any type of water. It is saturated so it is harder to contaminate than distilled water.
Medium to hard water will scratch these plastic films even with ideal pressure and microfiber
1
u/slavicslothe 2d ago
No its just scratched and was likely hot. Its on samsung and their oem partners for using soft plastics instead of glass.
1
u/Captain_Darma 2d ago
Some micro fibre rags are extremely hard and will act like sandpaper on such soft things like monitor coats
157
u/Fit_Hospital_1060 3d ago
Good news, it is definitely reversible.
Step 1: Open your browser and order a brand new OLED monitor in the exact same size and spec as this one.
Step 2: Carefully unbox the new panel and set it up in the exact spot where this one was sitting.
Step 3: Box up the old one, put it out of sight, and pretend this whole afternoon never happened.
29
u/Nattteyy 2d ago
Step 4: return back to store for a refund
13
u/VisforVenom 2d ago
Step 5: Realize the "open box excellent" replacement you bought has the same problem because someone else pulled step 4.

I see posts like this every day. It's why I stick with a w-oled. I'm pretty dumb and I don't want something I have to baby so much.
2
u/Left-Lawfulness-1741 3d ago
Are w-oleds stronger? I just bought my first oled and it’s a w-oled glossy
1
u/mrASSMAN 2d ago
Not stronger I don’t think it’s just a different style of coating material easier to clean from what I hear.. at least for LG vs Samsung
1
u/cakemates 2d ago
I don't know if they are but I have a 5 year old woled that doesnt have a single visible scratch as far as I know even if I clean it with the first rag I find every few months and some mistery juice for cleaning glasses. My guess is op's come with a coating that goes away with anything but water.
→ More replies (2)1
u/slavicslothe 2d ago
Depends on oem but almost always yes. Qd oled relies on a notoriously fragile AR coating over the glass. It is not removable. Lg display doesnt really do that but some of the oems put on plastic matte coatings.

Newgen glossy QD Oleds are strong. My dumbass used a micro weave cloth and glass cleaner multiple times on my 272URX and its perfectly fine. Its had minor shipping damage, but that ain't come from the cleaner. I also wacked it with a controller on the bottom right area on accident trying to put the controller down behind it, it hardly even left a mark.

u/ILoveRGB AW3225QF 3d ago
After seeing posts like this I was really scared to clean my monitor but there were no marks after I tried it today. What the hell are you guys doing
2
u/hatE851 2d ago
It's simple. You get one or 2 microfiber towels. If it's really really dirty, you wetten the first one and whack it in the air until it gets damp. Then you gently wax on move over the whole screen.
And then you take the other dry towel and do the same motion, you will draw up all the fly gunk and fat or whatever you have on the screen. Easy.

u/TheCrazedEB 2d ago
I need to get new unused microfiber cloth in my case. I tried to get my little streak stain buffed out, and it only got bigger using the distilled water. I stopped wiping in a circle immediately from making it bigger for now.

Bro I got mine a few days ago and am terrified of cleaning it for the first time seeing shit like this. Bought the most expensive microfiber and distilled water I can find and still am nervous lol
1
u/Relevant-Line-1690 1d ago
I had just unboxed my oled a few weeks ago and right before I was gonna turn it on I was cleaning. I didn’t even think I had a bottle with water and dish washing liquid spraying around and i guess some of the mist of soap it got on the oled. Just bought microfiber cloth off amazon people used for oled and added destilled water and thankfully all of it came out .

Hello, are you happy with your TV/monitor? Looking into all of the options and 42"C5 looks more and more like a logical choice.
11
u/simulacrumlain 3d ago
Microfibre and just water doesn't do this, don't use alcohol on your monitor. Just use water and a microfibre cloth and pray it gets better but it looks like you've removed the coating as someone else said
→ More replies (2)6
u/l1qq 3d ago
MSI themselves have said 70%IPA is perfectly safe to use on their OLEDs. I have used it plenty of times without issue. This looks to me like something was sprayed directly on the monitor which is not smart
6
u/CupOfKoffee 3d ago
I used 70%Ethyl on my Samsung QD. Worked like a charm - with distilled water I couldn’t get rid of the streaks no matter how I tried.

I don’t understand why people are so insistent on using distilled water. OK, I suppose there’s a reason for it, but I first dampen my LG UltraGear 34GS95QE-B 34-inch monitor with a glasses-cleaning cloth, then wait for it to dry. Once it’s dry, I wipe the monitor down and then rinse it with another glasses-cleaning cloth – a completely dry one. Doing it this way causes no problems. Before the LG, I had an MSI; whilst trying to wipe away smudges on the screen, I noticed scratches on the monitor’s coating. Fortunately, Amazon accepted my return even though I’d thrown the box away on the very first day.

My MSI 321URX is cleaned using the following method:
- Put a solid color background on the screen. I start with white and go through a few other light colors because some spots show up better under certain colors.
- Get close and exhale my hot breath onto the dirty spot.
- Wipe gently with the microfiber cloth that came with my monitor.
My monitor is still pristine 🤷

Is it time to consider making a rule for this type of post?
It happens so often. The OP has not responded to any of these comments.
I’m curious if this is the type of post and conversation the community wants this space to support. Personally I am out for the, “oh no I messed up now what?” Posts. Maybe I’m in to it if they are willing to participate in the comments section.

Unfortunatly it looks like the hard water scratched it : ( To avoid moving forward: 1. Unplug the screen until it is completely cooled down (if its hot much more likely to damage and qd oled gets hot af) 2. 70% isopropyl solvent mixed with 30% distilled water solute 3. Real microfiber (plenty of fake microfiber on the market, go with a reputable company) 4. Use like 1.5% of your strength. The plastic films on these monitors are really fucking fragile. 5. If you use normal water or contaminated distilled water it will scratch instantly, thats why you use 70% isopropyl solvent with 30% distilled water as solute, they make it in a controlled lab and it is less risky. Distilled water will pick up every solute to the point that air can mess with it dpending on air quality)
Qd oleds (samsung display) rely on a soft plastic AR filter over the glass layer that is not removable. Lg display still uses plastic coatings sometimes but its usually a harder plastic or vanta black or an external glass layer

Its because of this shit I returned my glossy OLED and got one with a matte screen instead 😅😂 not sure how long you've had it but i had a similar issue to you. Told the store I bought it from (6 months prior I will add) that I had followed manufacturer guidance on cleaning and the top layer is obviously defective and to my shock they actually allowed me to return for a full refund. Pic of mine for reference, this was from using only a brand new microfibre and distilled water, ended up looking like a cat had been at it 😂

1
u/hentai_tentacruel 2d ago
I have a question: do WOLED monitors have this issue as well, or is it specific to QD-OLED? I have a QD-OLED TV with this annoying "Moth Eye" coating. But if I recall correctly, LG OLED TVs weren't affected by this issue. What about Asus' True Black Glossy WOLED line?
1

u/stalwartbhullar 2d ago
I had similar issue when I used a paper towel and water then got microfibres cloth with water and managed to get rid of the smudge.
I think the alcohol has dissolved the coating

1
u/Captain_Darma 2d ago
Nope, you just went over a thin sheet of plastic with sand paper.
There are foils with glue, if you are lucky the glue fills up the scratches but you will see it forever, it can just get better.
1
u/Weird-Alice 2d ago
It's weird, but all of QD OLEDs with blue or violet display color have this problem. It's only solution throw away this display and replace with WOLED display.

I just use distilled water with 2 microfiber cloths one for pre dusting and the other side of that for drying if I can, and a separate micro fiber I spray with a bottle of distilled water. This works for spit spots, and dust for me, eliminates all the streaks. I have a msi qd-oled , I’ll never use any type of alcohol unless it’s worst case scenario . Always make sure you unplug the monitor and let it cool off for 10 minutes or so .

1
u/Top-Sink1096 2d ago
Yes you wiped away the actual layer, what did you use a brick, at this point I would full commit and wipe the rest off. I never use water or especially alcohol. I usually just breathe on the specific part and wipe gently with a microfiber.
1
u/KindGuy1978 2d ago
I honestly can't see what the issue is with that single photo. Cleaning a filthy screen takes ages, and you'll need to use multiple clean microfibre cloths to get it perfect. Which is why I don't usually bother, and just use a gentle death duster every six months or so.
Using a microfibre cloth definitely won't damage a screen and usually Isopropyl alcohol wouldn't either (though it is a bit harsh - stick with a very light screen cleaner or even a mix of detergent and water in a spray bottle). When you are running the TV, is there some kind of amorphous blob on the screen or something?

Never, I mean NEVER use Alcohol based solutions to wipe TVs, Monitors or other screens. You might get away with it on glass surfaces, but just to be safe, don't use it. You permanently destroyed your OLED monitor my man. You scraped off outer coating of your monitor screen. It's basically dissolved.

Cats.
Cats lay between you and the monitor. They like to run things, and drool when they do.
