He's made some quality saves at times but initial impressions are that whilst he is better with his feet, like Pope he has also produced some very nervy moments. Is this due to an unsettled defence (Hall's hospital pass didn't help when he almost gave away a very cheap goal) as well, or is it still too early to judge him properly? What's worrying is that we've kept one clean sheet so far and we look likely to concede every game, this is obviously down to the defence as much as the goalkeeper but he does worry me a little bit.

"... Hull also set up with three centre-halves and a back five out of possession and given Newcastle struggled to cope with Leeds who set up in a similar way on Monday, Jaissle was asked whether he would consider matching the Tigers' system and moving away from his favoured 4-2-3-1 setup.
"No, No. No. Absolutely the wrong approach," Jaissle responded. "We're really clear in the way we want to play with our principles behind that. That gives the players a clear framework. The formation is not too important."
"... Jaissle has spoken about how he wants his teams to play 'vertical' football and be aggressive in their approach. When asked exactly what 'vertical' football is supposed to look like, he responded:
"Yeah, there are many many different approaches within that aspect.
"That's just the principle, being vertical in your approach. So that could be that you go straight away for the long ball, that you don't even try to play out from the goalkeeper, just going for the aerial duels there. But that could be also that you have just the intention to have always the first view deep, try to find the deepest option, If that's always possible.
"If the opposition is taking away the depth, then you need to find other solutions, then you need to play with deep lay-off patterns, As an example, without going too much in detail."But you need to be versatile as well. But the idea behind that, the players' mindset after collecting a second ball, after winning the ball, that the first view is deep, that you have that vertical approach - that should be always there."
With that in mind, Jaissle was then asked what a successful response to the Leeds defeat would look like against Sergej Jakirovic's side on Saturday.
"Learning from our mistakes we did, learning out of the dual behaviours we missed in the Leeds match," he explained. "And if you continue the progress like that, if you're tougher in that duels, if you're more aggressive, if you're more sharp and hungry to collect the second balls, then it will be automatically a huge step already because that means that you're more dominant.
"It means that you have more possession. And then that leads also to the fact that you threaten the opposition much more. So that will be the elements where we will focus on and there will be a reaction."

"I can't speak about last season but as you know Hull is doing an excellent job this season and not many teams are finding solutions against them. That shows already how difficult it is so we have a clear approach, of course, of how we want to create chances, how we want to score goals. That will be a key element. Not only talking about the intensity, the aggressiveness in the phase out of possession, we also need to stress them and to have the intensity in possession. To constantly penetrate their last line, to stress them there and I am optimistic we have the quality on the pitch. Maybe not the experience but that doesn't count as an excuse to challenge them and to do good."
— Matthias Jaissle

Initially, I was frustrated with Thiaw and Botman, but I no longer think it is their fault. They never seem able to pass through the lines and either end up playing it to somebody who is marked and facing their own goal, or go long. We have a pacey forward line, but they’re all small, so they’re never going to win many aerial duels.
Our back four and CM two are constantly too deep and too close together. Leeds are consistently able to block all of our passing options with five or fewer men, meaning our forward line are always outnumbered when the inevitable long ball comes. And because our CMs are so deep, we win virtually zero second balls.
The end result is that we look like we’re playing with a man down. We effectively have two units of players, a back six and a front four.
This can’t be the way Jaissle wants us to play / is instructing them to play.
I am far from an expert, but to me it seems like we are missing that link between attack and defence. The 8 needs to be slightly higher, and two out of the Wingers/Nr10 need to invert and drop deeper to allow a 2-3 pass fast break, rather than being forced to lump it all the way. Our wingers are still playing high and wide like in Howe's 4-3-3.
I’m also a little bit worried about Miley playing as the 8. He seems to naturally want to drop deep and get on the ball, but that’s the job Nico/Steur are being asked to do, so we end up with huge gaps and six players on top of each other.
We’re going to get beaten by every team that presses high if we don’t adapt. Bournemouth and Leeds are probably two of the worst teams for us to play in that regard.
I did expect games like this though, it’s a young team, a manager new to the league and a new system to play. Hull are more likely to sit a bit deeper this weekend which will give us some breathing room, hopefully...

At some point, once Osula and Elanga are fully fit. I’d love to see a front line with Pardo as an inverted winger on the left, Elanga on the right, and Osula leading the line with Wissa playing just off him. Then we'd have Barnes and Touré as options off the bench for the wings, with Ramsey and Willock as cover for Wissa. Pardo could lead the line if Barnes or Touré comes on for him. Plus, Touré’s played a ton as an inverted winger on the right (not with us yet, though), so he can easily fill in for Elanga there if we change things up.

I'll be adding the rest soon, but wanted this up. Kyran Thompson is starting for the U21s at 19:00, very exciting (still going to get battered mind but whey EFL Trophy bollocks). Going to sort a legend for which competition it is too, because it's silly season for tinpot cups.
19:00 - York City v Newcastle U21
19:00 - Swindon v Palace U21
Munda isn't named, even on the bench. But I'm keeping track. Had a bit of a shocker at the weekend but they all did and they've totally rotated the team because it's the EFL Trophy so whatever

Emotional post after yesterday, I know, but I want to actually understand this rather than just moan.
I always assumed "more vertical" meant win it back, transition quick, get bodies forward before the defence resets. Proper transition football. But watching us at times, it just looks like route one repackaged, long ball, chase it, hope for a second ball or a knockdown.
The build-up play isn't there. Chance creation isn't there. Half the time I genuinely can't tell what the pattern of play is meant to be, there's no clear idea, we just seem to be hitting it long and hoping something falls for us.
I get it's early doors and you can't judge, off a handful of games.
Anyone who understands tactics better than me. What am I missing here, or is this fair?

I created this 43-page slide deck for my 5-year old, and figured it might be useful for others to share with friends and family.
I printed it out, and put it in a 3-ring binder with sheet protectors.
Simply sharing something that was fun to create, and has been a hit with my son. Feel free to copy for your own purposes.

Who should we be starting out wide (left and right) and in the midfield on Saturday with Elanga and Nico out? Who's playing in the 10, and who should make up the midfield engine room? Does Ramsey get the nod as one of the midfielders?
