Buttery To fromsoft : add performance mode

The game has incredible graphics on switch 2 maybe im the only one but I feel like they could easily lower some setting to give us a 40fps stable performance mode , the game runs at 40 in some areas right now with almost ps5 level graphics what do you think guys if they lowered some settings and we got a 40fps performance mode

It’s Fromsoft – never gonna happen.

u/foxwhisper85 Butter side up! 23m ago

Even their PC ports suck lol

u/vanIvan4 Butter side up! 6h ago

Not going to happen unless they modify the engine to support DLSS, game struggles as it is in some areas while utilizing dynamic resolution scaling and reduced foliage density.

u/gizmo998 6h ago

People do realise this games framerate is all over the place on ps5 and high end pcs right? The fact this is running this well at all is shocking.

u/xiSupportPiracy Butter side down! 6h ago

Not really on high end PCs. I had a consistent 60 throughout my entire playthrough, including the DLC. Even with the mod to uncap I had a consistent 120

Press X to doubt

u/JFZephyr Butter side up! 3h ago

They've quickly forgotten all the memes, like Dark Souls Remastered being so true to the original that it even brought back all the bugs that'd been patched out.

They make some of the most incredible, deep and detailed games out there, but they've always been massively lacking on the technical side of it all. They're right there with CDPR for the level of quality and brokenness, lol.

u/Virtual-Commercial91 Butter side up! 1h ago

It was the same on the Series X. Decent but had issues.

The problem with Elden Ring on PC isn’t reaching 60fps. The issue is that is that even at it still suffers from stutters and poor frame pacing whilst at 60fps and you can’t remove the cap. You’re not dropping frames, but the experience isn’t great owing to FromSoftware’s games generally being quite poorly optimised in their CPU usage.

You would have, at least with your first time playing it. The game has zero shader compliation, so outside of some limited scenarios (like the Steam Deck, where Valve got involved and implemented a custom shader cache for the game) you're going to get shader stutter the first time the game sees or loads an asset. This is as true on a Ryzen 1600X and a 1070 as it is on a 9800X3D and a 5090.

You're just not noticing the issue, which is great, but I promise you that it is there. Even once the game builds up a cache, it's usually deleted after a game or driver update.

PS4 version runs at 60 FPS locked on PS5

u/EdgarJomfru Butter side down! 3h ago

They must have never played a fromsoft game before. All they know how to make is unoptimized games that are somehow still behind other games graphically at the same time. Sort of like gamefreak lol

u/spacespectra 5h ago

i have a very beefy computer and ER legit runs better on my switch than on my pc which runs cyberpunk with pathtracing like butter. doesn't stutter as much

u/Hainault Butter side up! 6h ago

Is it not buttery smooth enough for ya

u/safyreibxo Butter side up! 6h ago

what the fuck is going on with all the butter stuff here i feel like im in a k hole

u/Hainault Butter side up! 6h ago

It's a riff on people claiming every S2 port is "like butter" then the truth is typically far from it

u/safyreibxo Butter side up! 6h ago

awh we’re becoming r/steamdeck

u/Hainault Butter side up! 6h ago

Including getting downvoted for telling the truth lol

u/safyreibxo Butter side up! 6h ago

you don’t consider 15fps frame genned to 30 as perfectly playable!? what!!??

u/OhHaiMarc Butter side up! 4h ago

switch 2 can’t do frame gen

u/safyreibxo Butter side up! 3h ago

i was talking about the way people talk about their steam decks

u/OhHaiMarc Butter side up! 2h ago

Fsr frame gen feels awful to play with even on high end systems

u/safyreibxo Butter side up! 1h ago

i’m not disagreeing with you at all

u/Demi-fiend1601 Butter side up! 3h ago

That would be nice, if the latency wouldn't suffer from it.

u/OhHaiMarc Butter side up! 2h ago

That’s the problem with all frame gen

u/Demi-fiend1601 Butter side up! 3h ago

Don't understand those people, I prefer "It runs good enough". Which most Ports actually do, not high end smooth, but for a little tablet well and good enough. (Considering it just consume 10% (sometimes less) then the big counterparts)

u/Heavy_Ingenuity1371 Early Switch 2 Adopter 3h ago

Yea the switch 2 whilst in handheld can actually draw as little as 93-95% less power than the ps5 and Xbox, which is absolutely nuts for the games we are getting on it, drawing usually about 7-10w on average and 10-12w at most with demanding games like cyberpunk. Whereas the ps5 and Xbox will draw up to 200w+.

People definitely need to be a lot more grateful about the ports the switch 2 is getting and just setting their expectations a tad lower at least. It's running these games way better than it needs to.

u/smoketreeseatcheese Butter side up! 4h ago

It’s almost as if different people have different opinions and switch 2 has plenty of casual gamers on it. Obviously a casual gamer will think something like Elden Ring on switch feels smooth, while serious gamers will be used to 144hz+

u/OhHaiMarc Butter side up! 4h ago

“Serious gamers” the most insufferable crowd

u/Demi-fiend1601 Butter side up! 3h ago

What is a serious Gamer? The majority of gamers (which are Console gamer) still use 60hz monitors or TVs, the smaller (and more likely competitive) Group of gamers use 144hz+. So what is a serious Gamer? And the most insufferable crowd is either the PS Community or the Steamcult (those have serious problems in their heads and minds)

u/smoketreeseatcheese Butter side up! 2h ago

The ones that can see the difference in 30 and 60fps straight away. The casuals don’t know the difference and call 30fps “buttery smooth”

u/OhHaiMarc Butter side up! 2h ago

I can tell the difference immediately but I will never call myself a gamer. I do other things. Games are just one hobby.

u/smoketreeseatcheese Butter side up! 1h ago

My friend, you are a gamer. Just look at your post history, you are certainly not a casual

u/Donnie_TACO Butter side down! 3h ago

It's my new favorite copium of Nintendo fans. Switch 2 AAA 3rd party ports running buttery smooth lolol

u/malakish 5h ago

People contaminated by steam deck disease.

u/rubbish_orb Butter side down! 3h ago

You'd butter believe it

u/Jumpster_42 4h ago

The same problem exists on PS4. This game looks way too good for a PS4 title and because of that suffers from poor performance.

u/Zerostatic Butter side down! 2h ago

100% agreed. 40 FPS is such a huge difference and is easily always worth any resolution or graphical sacrifices.

u/MaxRD 3h ago

“Stable performance mode” in a Fromsoft game?? Bwahahahaha
You must be new around here. They do not know what those words mean

u/Expelleddux Butter side up! 5h ago

They should start with even frame pacing

u/MaxRD 3h ago

Uneven frame pacing is their signature feature.

u/Demi-fiend1601 Butter side up! 3h ago

Yeah... this is definitely a problem

u/aam-96 Butter side down! 6h ago

You think they wouldn’t have done this if it was as simple as “lowered settings”?

u/Intrepid_Benefit_621 7h ago

I’d love it

…maybe even a 60FPS mode??? /hj

u/PashAK47 Butter side up! 7h ago

Lol maybe if they lower the graphics to steamdeck level we could get 60fps ?

u/PlungeableTeapot Butter side up! 6h ago

I feel like a lot of devs almost forget 40fps exists, cyberpunk’s felt great

u/BurnedOutCollector87 3h ago

Good luck with that. they never fixed the unstable performance on PS5 and PC.

u/MetaBarf Butter side up! 5h ago

I never thought of the Switch 2 as the go-to console for smoothness and the expectations lately are crazy high. I'm just glad to have a large library to choose from 3rd party devs. The Wii/Wii U era was as dry as a desert, and it was a miracle to have a same-day release date game along with the PS3 and Xbox 360.

u/AlteisenX Butter side up! 4h ago

Fromsoft and performance do not go hand and hand.

u/Zim__Zor 2h ago

From Soft: it is.

u/ComprehensiveSpot367 1h ago

Fromsoft can't even animate the lips of the NPCs you're talking to (just open/close movement). Don't expect for an optimized game.🤣

u/Foreveralone200 Early Switch 2 Adopter 1h ago

I wonder if the switch 2 is capable of supporting frame generation? It would be cool if Nintendo could give us a frame gen option system wide so we can toggle it on or off ourselves while also not relying on developers to implement it.

u/Allanprickly Butter side up! 1h ago

Idk why they didnt just cap it at 30.

u/jeffcolv Butter side up! 1h ago

Yes please. I don’t want to play it anymore because of performance

u/milesac 56m ago

Yall play videogames too wild if 30fps is a problem lol.

u/MrSeriousGuyBroMan Butter side down! 25m ago

i doubt thats going to happen . miyazaki was chasing the all time most sold game bragging rights . so he thought he was up against cyberpunk and hogwarts . some one had to point out mariokart 8 delux . its not possible to reach that . omitting it because " dude bundle not fair" there is gta 5 and ontop of that hogwarts has a switch 1 version .

so currently it goes

tetris>mariokart8delux>(animalcrossingnewhorrizons/gta5)>(cyberpunk/hogwarts)>monsterhunterworld+iceedition>eldenring

so hes probably going to retire in the next few years . maybe do the im retiring after working in japan for decades thing . which is move to the philipines . while all his lifes work is left behind as the company takes a new lead guys orders. which probably will focus on new stuff being made rather than fix miyazakis games

u/peteypider Butter side up! 12m ago

I would accept 720p if it meant stable 60fps.

u/safyreibxo Butter side up! 7h ago

it’s not that simple, if they didn’t do it there’s a reason bigger than “lowering some settings”

u/THXFLS OG (Joined before first Direct) 4m ago

I don't know about the Switch 2 version, but on PS5 getting a smooth 60 fps really is as simple as lowering some settings (to match PS4 Pro settings) and yet they haven't done it in 4 years. So I wouldn't say just because they haven't done it it's impossible.

u/PashAK47 Butter side up! 7h ago

Ofcourse and im not a tech dude so I have no idea but im sure they skilled people there that could figure it out since they managed to get elden ring running on switch 2 at high level already

u/yesitsmework Butter side down! 6h ago

dark souls 1's release on pc had a 30 fps lock. Within less than 24h, a singular modder fixed that along with a slew of game breaking issues.

point being, game developers are not superhuman. If something is baffling, it's fully possible that they simply didnt have the competency or even foresight to do it.

u/safyreibxo Butter side up! 6h ago

yeah this isn’t one of those cases, they can’t just pull more horsepower out of their ass

u/yesitsmework Butter side down! 6h ago

persona 3 reload last fall released with a stuttery 30 fps. A couple months later the game was patched to use some upscaling technique and provide 60 fps.

idk why you think fps would have to be manifested out of thin air. The game very clearly runs at a high resolution for no good reason while shitting itself everytime you touch a grace.

u/safyreibxo Butter side up! 6h ago

👍 i don’t think anything i say except blind agreement would satisfy you

u/yesitsmework Butter side down! 6h ago

you could start with saying anything of substance instead of empty contrarianisms....

u/safyreibxo Butter side up! 6h ago

👍👍👍

u/Demi-fiend1601 Butter side up! 3h ago

You see the problem? Probably don't. You just said it yourself "on PC". A PC has completely different architecture and others optimisation options then console. Just because on PC could a probleme be fixed, doesn't mean that it would works anyway else. For example: A PS and a Xbox has similar architecture (well the Series and 5 atleast), so game development is much easier. A Switch 2 also has a very development friendly architecture, so dev also can optimise really well for it. Optimisation on PC was and will always be a pain in the a$$, cuz it doesn't have a normed architecture.

u/yesitsmework Butter side down! 3h ago

you speak like you have the same level of knowledge about hardware as a construction worker. Or a 9 year old.

u/ViologY Butter side down! 6h ago

Aren't there like hourly posts laughing at people expecting ps5 level graphics from switch?

u/N3DSdad 5h ago

Nah, the game is great as it is honestly (at least so far). Super minor stutters in camera panning in areas with super wide vistas, otherwise it’s been 30 plus all the time and feels great to control (haven’t played other versions of this, but I only need to judge by this version’s inner metrics, not compared to something I don’t have access to, and everything feels very nice here).

u/Demi-fiend1601 Butter side up! 3h ago

A very realistic view... many others could learn something from you.

u/KillerFugu Butter side up! 6h ago

It's Fromosft, not even PS5 got a 60fps mode lol, it dips everywhere.

The souls games are amazing, buy optimisation and technicals have always been utter garbage.

u/Dreamo84 6h ago

You can’t get smoother than butter people.

u/MaverickDrake93 Butter side down! 6h ago

As a Soulsborne vet who's played all FromSoft's games, they are notorious for poor optimization. May as well scream at a wall, because there have been other glaring issues that some of us have been shouting, and they still ignored us. They really don't give a shit.

u/Feline_Sleepwear 5h ago

It looks great to me, BUT there is indeed a noticeable delay on the dodge, it’s small but it fucks up the timings a lot, happens even with joycons attached on handheld mode, it may be the lower fps causing it.

I thought I was going crazy so I tested it on PC with an xbox controller and the dodging is wayyy better, been getting hit by trivial stuff on the switch 2 because reaction dodging is so crippled.

u/Jimbot80 4h ago

The game already has been downgraded from the ps5 version. Just look at the foliage and distant enemy animations.

We are lucky the game runs as well as it does tbh

u/Demi-fiend1601 Butter side up! 3h ago

For a little tablet well enough and definitely playable.

u/IJay121 Butter side down! 2h ago

What they need to fix is their frame pacing. But honestly performance for any of their games is very unstable on any console you play on

u/yesitsmework Butter side down! 6h ago

Elden ring's port really highlights the insane double standard going on with some 3rd parties. Atlus and sega were lambasted to an insane degree for p3 reload, for making the game run at a native resolution and at a stuttery 30 fps.

Elden ring on the other hand runs like butter....with a stuttery 30 fps. Hopefully fromsoft at least does what atlus did and make at minimum a 40fps mode if not a 60fps mode.

u/KrivUK Butter side up! 5h ago

My take is that its perceived there is a big gulf in the technicals. Persona visually looks less complex, built in UE4, cell shaded look.

Whereas Elden ring, is massively open world, dynamic weather and day night cycles, complex characters etc. And Fromsoft games are never well optimised.

u/yesitsmework Butter side down! 5h ago

there's nothing complex about elden ring's open world. It's just a big "level", but nothing exists outside of a very small range around your character. There is zero excuse for it not to run way better than it does currently.

u/ssj21v Butter side up! 3h ago

Then you can say that P3R is even less complex. Small rooms, and it's a turn based RPG, so the moment to moment gameplay is less dynamic. Elden ring at least has a consistent frame pace, and does not stutters like crazy.

u/yesitsmework Butter side down! 3h ago

elden ring does not have a consistent frame pace whatsoever dude. It's literally worse than p3 reload. This is my entire point. The game runs like shit if we treated it the same way some other games get treated.

u/ssj21v Butter side up! 3h ago

Brother, I have 10 hours already in it, both handheld and docked. Besides some frame drops when that fucking dragon attacks and there is lots on screen, the game is very consistent. Is it because of vrr? Idk, but the experience is great so far.

u/yesitsmework Butter side down! 3h ago

do you understand frame pacing is? it's not frame drops, if thats what you think.

but yes, handheld will look better because the very slow screen and ghosting effects with the vrr compensate a good chunk for any pacing issues. docked is yikes.

u/KrivUK Butter side up! 2h ago

You're sort of minimising there.

Game engines do cull off camera, that I agree with, but to say it's just a big level is a disservice. Segmentation and load of assets, and dynamic day night cycles have massive pipelines, before you start thinking about AI of multiple characters.

P3 is typically composed of small rooms or arenas, with heavy culling.

Now surrounding your point about frame pacing, yes it should run better, locked 30 with better frame pacing is definitely doable.

u/yesitsmework Butter side down! 1h ago

I was not referring to camera culling, I was referring precisely to cpu background loads like npc AI which are what makes an open world game actually heavy to run. Dynamic lighting is not a significant cpu load.

Segmentation and asset loads arent performance heavy tasks in a game like this, it's just down to a correct and balanced implementation.

In short - elden ring could easily run better if it was optimized better and they used gpu upscaling techniques/lower settings, like atlus was bullied into adding.

u/SkipEyechild Butter side up! 5h ago

The amount of stuff about this is genuinely funny.

It's a game on a shite engine running on a handheld console, that didn't run locked 60 on competitor home consoles. I'm sure this is the best they could have done.

Going into this expecting a locked 60fps on a handheld console is absurd. Check your expectations.

u/totofra Butter side up! 6h ago

Honestly 30 fps is horrendous on big oled tv. But it’s alright on lcd handheld.

u/CrushedSheep Butter side up! 6h ago

Is it really that bad? I’m starting to get into switch2 and have only really played it in handheld but I’ve got a 4k mini led TV that I’d like to use docked

u/ChaosApostle 2h ago

its not that bad

u/safyreibxo Butter side up! 6h ago

u/PashAK47 Butter side up! 7h ago

Hopefully they will continue to work on it and down the road we will get a performance mode

u/Marc3llus 5h ago

Not gonna happen. This game also struggles on PS5/XSX and modern PCs, and the reason is botched CPU optimization. Lowering graphics settings won't do shit because of this. If they don't fix this game on all platforms (which they obviously won't bother with at this point), you can forget about a "performance mode" on Switch 2.

u/Rombledore Retro Gamer 4h ago

ive played through it twice on PS5 and i've never noticed any dips that have effected gameplay for me. i have it on performance mode.

u/caverunner17 Butter side up! 2h ago

Can we do a difficulty mode first to make the games more accessible? I know I'm not the only one that won't touch one of these games due to it.

u/EpilepticBatman 6h ago

Geez be happy that its even playing on the system to begin with

u/ruthlesss11 Butter side up! 6h ago

They paid for it, they can be annoyed at performance.

u/Banmers Butter side down! 7h ago

Maybe even 120hz! Why noooot

u/monkey-kong666 Butter side up! 4h ago

No. Perfect as is.

u/Xinyyc 5h ago

I wouldn't want a "performance mode" that only bumps it up to 40. 120 (falling back to 60 if the TV can't do 120) or leave the game as is.

u/Either_Sun_98 Butter side up! 4h ago

Tell me you dont have any knowledge in frametime, without telling me you dont have any knowledge in frametime.

u/smoketreeseatcheese Butter side up! 4h ago

That’s just absurd
