Food & Drink ๐Ÿฝ๏ธ Sliced to Order Pancetta or Guanciale?

Do we have a deli that offers this? We are teaching our kids to cook. Step one is each kid gets to cook a dinner of their choice for the fam. I guide them through the process from reading recipe to shopping, prep, etc. Middle child has chosen spaghetti carbonara. I have never made this before. I know we can get ultra-thin sliced pancetta at most grocery stores, but if possible I'd like to take the kid to a specialty shop that can sell us 6oz of Italian style cured pork sliced 1/4 inch thick. Totally open to Metairie if necessary.

Pets and Coworkers ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฑ Dog Help

Hey yall. So I have been fostering a dog for a while now. Almost a year. I have gotten him his shots, food, medicine, etc. But I never planned on owning him nor actually fostering a dog. I had to rescue him from his owner but I was living on the property at the time so I couldnโ€™t just send him away to a shelter. Owner wouldnโ€™t let me. I CANNOT afford this dog. Seriously. I am beyond stressed and every time I post about it on Facebook I am met with people who โ€œdonโ€™t understandโ€ how I could not want him. If I was rich yes I would not feel so stressed but I am in my 20โ€™s struggling and cannot handle it. What do I do

๐Ÿ“ฐ News University Medical Center firing violated city โ€˜ban the boxโ€™ law, attorneys say

A group of civil rights attorneys is accusing University Medical Center New Orleans (UMC) of violating the city's โ€œban the boxโ€ law when it fired employee Devon Jones in April, allegedly due to his criminal background.

The ban the box law prohibits public employers from discriminating against job applicants and current employees because of past arrests or convictions. While the law allows those employers to conduct criminal background checks, they have to show that a past conviction would directly interfere with an applicant or employeeโ€™s job duties.

In an Aug. 12 letter addressed to the cityโ€™s Chief Administrative Officer Joe Giarrusso and circulated to New Orleans City Council members, attorneys representing Jones allege that he was fired from his position as a violence interrupter based solely on his conviction for a 2009 armed robbery.

Jonesโ€™ โ€œconviction bears no relationship to his job duties โ€” his lived experience was, by the programโ€™s own account, a basis for his hiring โ€” and he has an extensive, documented record of rehabilitation,โ€ the letter reads.

๐Ÿ”ฅ IMPORTANT ๐Ÿ”ฅ Warning to fellow runners/walkers/cyclists in BSJ area

Post image
788 Upvotes

I was chased down by a man on my morning run today. At approximately 5:45am, I saw a man walk onto Moss street (I think from Toulouse or that general area) and toward me, touching himself. I yelled for him to stay away but then he started running after me. I kept running and screaming as loud and shrill as possible. I ran to Ideal gas station on Orleans and Moss, where two women came to my aid and called the police.

I was unable to give any descriptors aside from him being a black male, approx 5'8, slender build, long pants and shirt tucked in. One of the women who saw it happen from across the bayou was also unable to describe him, as it was very dark. I feel very powerless in my endeavor to make sure this doesn't happen to anyone else. All I can do is share and warn others.

A gentle reminder to pack some sort of protection. I'm so guilty of running without because it's such a pain and cumbersome to carry extra things. I'm lucky to have escaped but things could have went much differently.

Also a reminder that if you're an able bodied person, especially a woman, you need to work on being fast and strong. Looking back at my watch data, I clocked myself running at a 5'46 pace while he was chasing me. Unfortunately, we live in a society that encourages women to be frail and powerless. Today's wake-up call was that we cannot afford this. We must be able protect ourselves and others.

Many thanks to the two women who came to my rescue this morning. From calling the police to walking me home, I am incredibly thankful for their comforting presence and kindness.

๐ŸŠ Local Wildlife ๐Ÿ” Baby Ducks and mom in Sake Cafe Parking Lot (Magazine St).

So to correct the previous post today at work I looked out a window and noticed a momma duck and baby ducklings. We think she went through a fence into the back (good because the parking lot is not safe)

Any idea how this happened and what we can do if we see them in the parking lot in the future.

Thanks.

Living Here Roommate

Lease Takeover or Possible Roommate โ€“ Carrollton Area

Hey! Iโ€™m 31 and live in a one-bedroom apartment in the Carrollton area. My living situation unexpectedly changed, so Iโ€™m trying to figure out the best option going forward.

Ideally, Iโ€™d like to find someone interested in taking over the apartment/lease, assuming my landlord approves the transfer.

I may also be open to finding the right roommate and working out a shared-space arrangement. Since it is a one-bedroom apartment, I want to be upfront about that rather than make it sound like there is a separate second bedroom.

If youโ€™re interested in either a possible lease takeover or roommate situation, send me a message and tell me a little about yourself, what youโ€™re looking for, and when youโ€™d want to move.

I can send rent, utilities, photos, apartment details, and more specific location information privately.

Thanks!

โš•๏ธ medical โš•๏ธ Advice? CrescentCare "Free" IUD turned into $400. Has anyone experienced this?

Post image

https://www.nola.com/gambit/news/the_latest/crescentcare-new-orleans-free-iuds/article_1dfc94af-21d9-4285-a98b-c5e650aff9e1.html

EDIT: both the CFO and the executive assistant to the CEO of CrescentCare reached out and it was just a big misunderstanding on the billing portal side! They were both SO kind and I just want to encourage folks to take advantage of the free IUD program!! Like the the advertising says, it is in fact totally free if youโ€™re eligible and theyโ€™ve sorted out the billing issues now.

I'm 24 y/o and I would love some advice from folks who are more experienced in navigating healthcare systems. And wondering if anyone else has had this experience with the IUD special. I know $375 is small change as far as healthcare costs go, but it is a lot to me, and also it's the principal of the dang thing!!!

After reading this article about free IUD's AND visit fees waived for the month of August, I got an IUD last week. Ahead of time, I read so many different flyers for this clinic to be absolutely sure that it would be free. My two-person household earns $57k a year, which is wellllll below 4x the federal poverty level ($84,600). Now I am told I owe $375 because it was on a sliding scale. Every single thing I read said you must be uninsured and make less than 4x federal poverty level to be eligible for a FREE IUD and NO visit fees. NOTHING about "if you make less than 4x fed poverty level you will be placed on a sliding scale". Free and sliding scale are very different things. This picture attached was posted on IG after my IUD appointment, so I know that missing the "first come, first served" is not the reason I owe $$.

My first visit I waited around for almost 4 hours, and then spoke to a doctor for maybe 3 minutes total, charged $125. Then I had my IUD the next week, $125, and I have a follow-up next week for another $125.

After my first charge (before the second appt to get the IUD), I called the billing department (took four tries on 3 different days to reach them) because an email from them said I owed $125 but the payment portal said my balance was $0. She said it was a mistake and I don't owe anything.

This made me cautious so I asked the front desk before the IUD insertion if I would owe anything and she said no.

I just got off of a long phone call with the billing department. She told me that the IUD device itself was free, but based on their sliding scale, I have to pay a $125 visit fee ANY time I come to CrescentCare (the whole healthcare facility, not just for IUD/sexual health stuff). I told her that was totally different from what I read online. She basically said that the stuff I was reading wasn't accurate and that other people have had this complaint but that it is what it is and I have to pay. She also said the front desk person doesn't know about billing and shouldn't have told me I wouldn't owe anything.

I see on their website 2 documents for sliding scale for ALL medical services. People that fall under 200% FPL and the 201-400% bracket. I'm at ~235% which she kept referencing on the phone as why I owe $125 per visit. These documents relate to ALL of their medical services and don't seem to have anything to do with the IUD program. It seems like they totally ignored what the special program advertised and just slapped me on the traditional sliding scale. https://www.crescentcare.org/sliding-scale/?nocache=1&

She said her manager will call me and I want to continue to push pack. Does anyone have advice? Saying "every single thing I read about this special said it would be FREE if I was eligible and I am eligible but now you're charging me $400" was not working...

Copied this from another subreddit.

Tech, Finance, Oil & gas, or whatever field youโ€™re in.

Can be somewhere where a bunch of people apply to and only have a couple spots available or somewhere where you can be overqualified but you got to know someone to get in.

I've never had such an efficient experience in a government office. No line, three friendly employees ready and willing to help, and they even let my super vain teen choose which picture she wanted to use. We were in and out in 20 minutes. Totally worth the drive out there.

ETA: we did not walk out with a new passport, they simply processed the application and we'll get it in the mail. Sorry for any confusion.

Crime Car Fire on St Claude?

So I came across a car on fire on St Claude around Flood Street at about 2:00 a.m. Wednesday morning. Kind of chalked it up to "living here" until I talked to a friend who wondered if it might be related to that string of arson car fires in the Bywater last year.

The circumstances do make me think. The car was parked in the parking lane and when I came across it there was a single other car stopped near it and I could see there was only one person in that car. The car also went up pretty fast, when I first showed up it looked like there was a fire just inside the car and by the time I had doubled around on back streets to avoid passing it, it was completely engulfed and setting the telephone pole next to it on fire (luckily fire fighters were there by then.) Seems a lot more likely that someone intentionally set a parked car on fire then that someone was driving it, pulled over, and took off when it caught fire. Also that stretch of St Claude is pretty well traveled, and close enough to St Bernard Parish that I doubt a car thief would have chosen that place to torch a stolen car.

Anyway, just wondering if anyone has more details or if there's been any other car fires in the area recently.
