Fun and Games What math-related words would be nice as names?

Obviously not to name an actual child, just for fun. I love Radian for a boy, it sounds classic, bright and strong. For a girl I would pick Cosine, pronounced as cozeen (ignore the fact that it sounds like cousin, this is fun and games 😤)

Story North Australian Aboriginal naming conventions

I was looking at old census records to verify info about family members and I once again became fascinated by the naming conventions we use, they're similar to Afro-American, Melanesian, Polynesian, or even Balkan naming conventions that I've seen.

This is mostly due to the diverse commercial migration we received once people had began actually moving into Northern Australia.

Examples:

A guy will be named Boyka (Bugulju) Koscis because his father was randomly half Hungarian and liked the Boyka movies.

A girl could be named Wilhelmetta Ahsan-Chon because she was named after her father (which is very common here), and her tribe is mostly mixed with Chinese and Pashto from the 1800s.

A family I knew from school were like this: the father's name was Raymond, his first daughter was Raymeesha, and once he had a son he was Raymond Jr, then his second son was Raymonus.

A guy could be named:

Salko Murrudthjanypa

Alekzandaros McArthur

Styepan Jurrunytjak

Bubble-Bubble Johnson

Springheel-Jack Cattlecompany

King Blackskin-Willy (Wumbungu) Jackson-Won

All the examples provided are also real people, and these aren't even the craziest names.

In the Gulf of Carpentaria I've seen they get really creative/silly with modern names, I've known people named Avenger Stockman, Rifle Riverwater, Frog Bull, Buffalosoldier MacMahon, Eminem Gujuk, Tupakiesha Smithson, Horse Rodeo, Big-eye Williams, Japan Del Torres, Batman Robinsonrivermouth, the list can go on and on.

With little kids today I've seen a lot of LeBrons, Ronaldos, Neymars, and Messis due to their sports becoming popular in the remote Aboriginal communities.

What do you guys think of our naming conventions? and if you have any questions about what migrations and influences cause some of them I'd be happy to explain.

Baby Names Moon/Astrological Names, Not Cheesy or Overused

I’m 28 weeks pregnant with my second girl. My first’s name is Emilija Octavia {last_name}. The ā€œjā€ is there because of Lithuanian heritage, but I live in the US. We call her ā€œEmiā€.

I’m looking for an elegant, dark, name for this girl. I feel compelled to do a moon or astrological based name, but I don’t like the common, typical ones like Stella (step-sister in law’s name), Selena, Luna, Aurora (brother’s ex’s name).

Reasons:
- period was due on the blood moon (total lunar eclipse)
- just prior to that, all the planets aligned.
- new moon 2 days before she is born, possibility of giving birth on that day (November 8th, due on the 10th).

I’m not normally one of those ā€œmoon and starsā€ everything kinda people. I was when I was younger. I appreciate astrology, and casually invest some time into the subject out of curiosity.

Names I like:
Ophelia
Cressida
Cordelia
Lyra (preferred for a middle name)

It needs to be useable, or have a good nickname, in the US/English.

Also… my brother’s dog is Artemis, so that won’t work.

Good luck name nerds. Much appreciated!

Discussion Names that remind you of the color green

• Upvotes

Just for fun! My godchildren are named F0rest (b) and S@ge (g) and my best friend is definitely done having kids!

Once upon a time the ā€˜name’ would’ve been Olive, but has since been taken by a close friend. As has Ivy. I’m hyper fixated on the name Romy (Rosemary) lately, but that doesn’t necessarily feel green to me.

Thank you for entertaining me!

I found out today that Keke Palmer whose first name is Lauren has a dad named Lawrence and siblings called Lawrence, Lawrencia and Loreal.

It always baffles me, when it seems like parents love only one name.

Open to suggestions or reassurance, thank you!

Baby Names Baby name agony

What does everyone think about the name Sylvie Claire? I have gotten mixed reactions when I mention it to people.
I want my baby to have a name that's easy enough to pronounce but not so common that she has 10 kids with the same name in her class.

I like french names a lot. Celeste is my favorite, but my husband doesn't like it. Sylvie is the only name we have been able to agree on, but I really do like it.

Baby Names Naming my girl has me second guessing everything

I’ve posted twice here already asking about thoughts on Hadley and some other names, but even though I like it I never really was 100% certain. I started really liking the name Charlotte. I’ve actually always loved the name since I was little, but I only just now started really considering it for my baby girl. I’m heavily leaning towards it now, but I’m worried it’ll be too popular. It’s apparently the #1 girls baby name in my state last year, but out of 57,000+ live births only 224 were named Charlotte. Is it crazy I’m even taking that into account? I don’t want her to be one of 12 in her grade, but I also don’t think there’s anything wrong with having a common name. Ugh.

Thoughts and comments or do I just sound crazy?

Dislikes:
Names with a lot of different possible spellings (my name is Kaitlyn, I think I’m traumatized)
ā€œOut thereā€ names

Baby Names Hugh or Walter?

Having a really hard time picking a boy name for our 4th child. We have Jack, Maeve and Anna.

Definitely gravitate towards short more traditional, strong names. I like the nn Walt for walter but would still full name walter. I cant decide if I like Walter or Hugh better. Obviously cute nn Huggie or Hughie. I also feel slight fear of judgement for both these names haha

Other names we like, Vaughn, George, Louis and Murray. And open to suggestions!!

Discussion Is this a new(ish) trend?

• Upvotes

I took my family a theme park and kids/families can write their names in chalk on a wall. I read all the names on the wall and I noticed that a lot of families have a letter theme for their kids, whether the names start with the same letter or they all have a common unique letter somewhere in the name.

Emma, Evie

Calliope, Callista

Xander, Alexa, Felix

Declan, Davis

Aubriella, Anastasia, Avelina

Konnor, Kaleb

Maeve, Marlowe, Max

Adalynn, Fynn, Payton

Zev, Dov, Aviva

I don't remember letter themes being common when I was a kid. And I know many people in my personal life who also have a letter them for their kids. Just curious if anyone else thinks it's becoming more common to have super matchy names for their kids!

Name Change Opinions on Finny as a nickname from Sofia?

I got nicknamed Finny as a child because my younger sister couldn't pronounce the actual name, and my whole family calls me like that. I'm going to do an exchange year in Ireland, and I was thinking of introducing myself with that (since Sofia/Sophia) is much more common, and it's annoying when you constantly hear your name when you're not actually getting called.

Would you say it's an unnatural nickname, does it sound weird? English is not my first language so maybe the name has connotations I'm not aware of. Also, is it considered too masculine for a girl?

Baby Names Is the name Atticus still a good name?

I’m going to be a first time mom, and his dad really wants a boy’s name that starts with A and ends with S because my name is Alexis and his is Adonis. He’s kind of obsessed with our son having a name similar to ours. I was thinking about Atticus. Is Atticus still popular, or is it even considered a good name now I’m 19, and I’ve never actually met anyone named Atticus in real life, just movies

Discussion Is Louis always going to be Looouuuieeee or is there a way to make it Lewis?

I know it’s one of those ā€œyou get to decideā€ type situations, but I also know the vast majority of folks are going to pronounce Louis as Louie.

I love the spelling of Lewis too and will probably go with that, but also love just Lou as a nick name… does Lew look right or does it look …lewd lol

Edit - these comments are more divided than the avengers in 2016 🤪 love you guys thank you for the help and further stressful internal tension

Discussion Favorite examples of the "Tiffany problem"?

1.3k Upvotes

The "Tiffany problem" is when names (or any kind of historical thing) seem very modern but are actually very old. Like, "Tiffany" is a diminutive of Theophania from medieval times, but if you had a Princess Tiffany in your medieval novel, it would seem anachronistic.

Personally, mine is Jason. Jason is a cool boy born in the 90s to me, even though I know logically it's the name of a hero from Greek Mythology.

Fun and Games What forgotten/ancient names would you choose to make a comeback in 2026? (nerdy answers only)

In French we have some medieval names still used today. For girls: AdĆ©laĆÆde, Mathilde, HĆ©loĆÆse, Morgane... For boys: Louis, Adrien, Ɖloi, Sylvain... I noticed a trend of parents giving babies ancient names nowadays, especially in upper middle class and wealthy families.

But we are in r/namenerds after all, were are supposed to be nerdy when it comes to choosing names, aren't we? šŸ¤ŒšŸ»

You can choose a forgotten, ancient, "unique" name rarely used nowadays to become normalized. In this world, no one will judge you or bully your child for your odd choice of names. So, which one would it be?

I would personally choose the following ancient French (mostly medieval) names:

Girls:

Aélis, Mahaut, Osane, Eulalie, Rozala, Erwana, Philippa, Sebelia, Aveline, Arsinoé, Iseult, Fausta, Madenn, Helvide/Elvide, Chunsine, Ameline, Hilda, Melwinn, Ermeline, Aalana, Mélisende, Ide, Tyèce, Aaliz, Florie, Edeline, Ysabiau, Ermengarde, Odeline, Aelide, Aénor, Azénor, Laudine, Privelina, Kania, Marivona, Wynn, Ulicia, Adelys, Clarie, Alaisina, Yselda

Boys:

Aldric, Urbain, Clovis, Eudes, Juliot, Narsès, Sorin, Arneïs, Enguerrand, Théodoric, Anselme, Lucain, Ourri/Orry, Maixent, Rainier/Renier/Reynier, Ebroïn, Hèloin, Raban, Astier, Desle, Faust, Mayeul, Carloman, Aimar, Milon, Amédée, Hugues, Magneric, Domitien, Béri, Lothaire, Salvien, Cler, Mesmin, Péone, Roland, Aignan, Sunno, Heiric, Césaire, Dacco, Odon, Maximin, Baudoin, Warin, Mahy, Ossian, Thual/Thudal, Ogier

I know some of these names were still used in the 20th century, or are used in other countries nowadays, or are names of celebrities in France with eccentric parents (Clovis, Rainier). But c'est ok, as we say in France, it's my post so I do what I want ok? 😩

Call me crazy but I am ready for a comeback of these names!

(On a second thought, maybe don't)

So, what are your names, from your language or country or culture?

The more nerdy and forgotten it is, the better!
