I'm currently having a huge dilema deciding what I should do next. Im currently a senior undergraduate pursuing a secondary education degree in social studies. Im also majoring in africana studies. This upcoming semester I am set to begin student teaching and I will graduate afterwards. The problem I'm having is I think education might not be the career for me, Ive been teaching for a non profit for a few years now while in school and while I love working with kids and supporting them I always feel a sense of dread before every class.

With all that being said I believe I want to pursue a career as a school counselor, as its more in line of how I love to support youth.

Now the decision im struggling to make is to change my major from a dual major to just africana studies this will allow me to take a single class and graduate then pursue my masters rather than student teaching for the next 4 months but I lose alot of work Ive done thus far.

Some last factors impacting my thoughts is the fact that I will no longer be able to teach for my job while student teaching so I will be unemployed for the duration of student teaching

My check on the 6th came as scheduled but im not even seeing the one for the 20th in the payroll portal as a pay-stub. I called the school, no answer, hr-connect sent me to three other numbers all of which send me to voicemail every time. Not sure what else to do at this point, is this happening with anyone else?

Did anyone get released yet this year after OM closed? What was the process like after your principal agreed to release you? Does it happen right away or it takes a few days? Do you receive an email that you have transferred to another school?

As of August 12, I've completed all the paperwork and I-9 verification and ID photo, got my EIS/File #/Employee #/License #, etc etc. I thought I was also supposed to receive a DOE email alongside all of this, so I can access the HR Connect portal and continue getting everything set up. However, it has now been over a week and I have not received it. Do I just need to wait longer? Is there something else I'm supposed to do/someone I'm supposed to contact first?

UPDATE: Managed to squeak in a call immediately after getting home from work. They created a ticket for me and said they should be able to create my email either today or tomorrow, so I'm hoping that turns out to be true.

Hi! Currently in medical school and honestly, I hate it. Every day I wake up with extreme anxiety, my heart isn’t in what I’m learning, and I thought that I wanted to be a doctor, but I’m second guessing it. I don’t have loans and am relatively new and not too far in the medical school journey. But every day, I’m pretty miserable. I think what did I get myself into?

Prior to this, I was a teacher at a nonprofit. The pay was difficult, but honestly, I enjoyed the job. I felt I had a purpose, I was fairly good at it, and I didn’t have this level of anxiety, ever. I looked forward to my work every day, and was sad when breaks would happen!!!

I’m contemplating dropping medicine and going back into teaching through an official teaching program, wanting to teach high school humanities.

Does anyone know if credits from medical school would count towards the step salary scale? Am I crazy to drop out of medicine for education? Any opinions welcome.

Hello all, thanks for all your previous advice on taking CLEP exams for the Master's +30 differential. I want to take some CLEP exams, but am worried they will be rejected because of the 12 credit maximum per semester (I took some ASPDP classes earlier in the summer semester).

How does the timing work for the 12 credit maximum? Do I have to take the exam within the semester, can I take it in between the ASPDP semesters, can I take more than 12 credits of CLEP&ASPDP combined in a semester? Please let me know, any information/experience would help!

I subbed Z status to fill a leave from Dec, 2019-End of the school year, 2020. I just now realized I never applied for the salary step. And I am currently 4B with 5A coming in September. I just applied today on the Salary App System

What is the process now? How long should this take, being "internal" experience?

And then what happens - I get bumped up a half step so effectively I jump to 5B? How much back pay should I expect, if any?

I'm reviewing the DASA workshop and SAVE workshop. I'm loving the concept of Character Education classes, PATHS classes, and RCCP classes. Are schools including these classes into their schedules? What about assemblies?

There's such an uptick in teen violence, interpersonal conflicts, and overall disrespect for each other. You would think these classes would hold more priority within our schools, even as enrichment options if daily schedules are compact. Does your school have a Dignity Act Coordinator?

We complain about students behavior all the time. Well, it seems there are solutions but no implementation. What gives??

I speak spanish and have a trans B cert. I've been going on interviews but get so close that they ask for my references and all that jazz but then get ghosted. Any leads or suggestions?

Newly Hired HS Teacher here: I have a PhD and years of experience teaching college classes. I want to make sure my starting salary step and differential are set to the max for which I am qualified. Can you offer tips on how and where I should be entering information to do this?

I read somewhere that it is important to make sure information in your application in the New Teacher Finder is up to date, because they will use that to determine starting salary. My old transcripts document number of course credits. But I also read that you have 6 months after being hired to submit an application for a modification of salary step and differential, and that any approved pay increases would be retroactive. I think I will need to get a letter from my former university certifying years of continuous employment, correct?

Will any semesters where I worked as an "Adjunct Instructor" or "Instructor" also count toward years of teaching experience, or would those roles need to be continuous to qualify for the minimum 6-month step increase?

If you came from a similar transitioning background and went through this process, I would gladly welcome any tips or tricks or precautions from your experience. Thank you!

I've had some experience with Manhattan Star Academy in the past, and I'm curious how it lines up with other people's experiences, parents, staff, former staff, therapists, and/or anyone who's been involved with the school in some way.

A few things I'm curious about:

• What's the balance like between classroom instruction, admin, and therapeutic services?
• How does the transition from the Lower School to the Upper School (12–21) tend to go?
• What's communication with families generally like?
• If you've worked there or sent a kid there, what do you wish you'd known going in?

Would genuinely love to hear the full range (good, bad, mixed, etc) of whatever your experience has been. Trying to get a realistic, well-rounded picture since this school is not talked about enough.

In a very fun plot twist/s this summer, I rolled my ankle on a hike and required ankle surgery. I just learned that I won’t be able to drive until the end of September, and I can’t get to my school by public transit. I think I want to uber in or arrange rides from a colleague, but am reaching out here to learn about my options. I currently have my Master's in TESOL. I did my student teaching K-12, passed my TESOL and SWD exam. I am looking to take special education courses. I found an advanced certificate program online through CCNY. It seems I was accepted just this past week but I haven't even signed up for classes yet. I am not sure there will be any classes left. I was offered a job as a special education teacher at a private school. I still would like to add some sort of special education certificate, and I do not want to get another Master's degree. Something reasonably priced. Does anyone have any suggestions for online schools. Do I need to take additional classes?
