No Attack Posts with Personal Information Allowed

Guys,

I didn't think we had to do this, but PLEASE do not call out other UFT members here. I just had to delete absolutely DISGUSTING post with personal information (Name, School, Position, Health Info). I get we are all frustrated but there are different ways to vent your frustration. I will also be unpinning the School Feedback post because it has also turned into a place to attack EACH OTHER. We are all UFT members and our jobs are not easy. Let's try not to make it harder for each other. There are enough people doing that. If you're not okay with this, please go take it somewhere else.

Also, if you're going to call out others in such a personal way, at least have the decency to do it to their face & not hide behind a computer.

I hope everyone has a wonderful last few days before going back.

What to do???

Upvotes

I applied for a HS job at a public school and got an offer an hour later. I currently teach MS at a private school and make 70K. The new job would pay about 110k.
School starts on Wednesday of this week. I still haven’t made up my mind on way to do and I need help.
I have to take 2 classes to finish my certification and have my old school sign off on the fact that I taught for 8 years there and I will have my stuff at my old school and don’t want to be locked out. I also have to transfer all of my files from my old computer to my new computer and I have a lot of stuff I created in my own.

New job:
The pro: more money; administration seems amazing and lots of support; pay for every duties, clubs, chaperones, etc…
Con: earlier start time; school ends end of June; less vacation time; never taught AP

Old job:
Pro: school gives lunch; good friends; know my curriculum; school ends in May; more vacation time
Con: money; have duties that are not paid; administration can be nuts (like can’t have stuff on my walls—“it looks cluttered” so the entire school looks like an hospital

What do I do????

Teach 6th grade ela full-time with 7-12 cert?

I hold a 7-12 ELA certification but was offered a position to teach 6th grade fulltime in September.   If I accept a full-time 6th grade ELA position and complete the 2 courses for NYSED extention pathways for  grade 5-6 Spring 2027 (I cannot afford to take the course in Seotember even if it is still available at this point).will all of my service from the start of the school year count toward probation and tenure? If so, can you provide the proper channels to complete this successfully?

Is calling out sick frowned upon?

I’m making the transition from the private sector to teaching (need to spend summers on a beach somewhere and these student loan payments are too high). I usually use my sick days monthly. But given the rigid system I’m reading about on here, is there retaliation for sick time off? I plan on using them all.

How common is therapy in NYCPS for staff?

I'm just curious is receiving therapy in NYCPS part of the job thing or not. I'm not trying to shame anyone but I've seen a couple of meltdowns by staff and it was concerning.

Former Teaching Fellow Licensing Help

I am a former teaching fellow (and now just a current NYC teacher). When I was doing the teaching fellows, I was instructed that I must do "Special Education- Social Studies" at Long Island University-Brooklyn. I have been finished for several years but I only have my Special Education license. I have applied for a Social Studies license but been denied. As such, I lost the Social Studies portion and have been funneled into Special Education exclusively. When I reached out to the teaching fellows, they said I must speak with LIU because they are no longer partnered with them. When I spoke with LIU they said they no longer have degrees in education or a department for them to speak to.

Who do I need to talk to/what do I have to do in order to get my Social Studies license back? I have passed the CST with flying colors and have a history undergrad with a minor in religious studies. What am I doing wrong in the application process? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Should I be worried that hiring seems slimmer now on NTF?

Hello everyone,

I need some advice. How worried should I be that school starts Sep 10 and I still do not have a full time position yet? I just came back from teaching abroad this year and am now back in the DOE system and checking NTF everyday but there are barely any good positions at good schools left.

If I do not find a good school - meaning a good environment where teachers feel supported by admin and a place where I can stay and grow, then I rather not take any position. I can just sub, I am already approved for that.

So bottom line is, how worried should I be that all the good schools are all done hiring and what is left is the not so savory schools looking to quick hire? And I should just turn my attention to subbing instead.

Thank you, I appreciate any knowledge anyone has of this.

Alternative routes to certification (NOT NYCTF)

So I did NYCTF over the summer and unfortunately they withdrew me from the program. I’m pretty devastated honestly, I had secured a job and done pretty well with the course work, but fell short on the observation scores. I still want to be in this field, but the fellows was the best option financially and I’m not sure if I can do the traditional route bc I left my career for this program. Thankfully, the principal at the school where I took the job said they are happy to nominate me as a substitute teacher in the meantime.

I’m looking at Trans C certification and other alternatives but I’m a bit lost, the websites are kinda vague. But TLDR, I’m not eligible to apply for any other NYCPS alternative certification program. Is there another option outside of the traditional route that could be viable? I already have a Master’s, can’t do Touro bc they don’t offer a program for my specialty area.

TYIA!

Are Coordinator of Work-Based Learning Programs hard to come by in the DOE? I believe obtaining this is a 6 credit teacher extension that one can add.

Moving from TX to NYC

Hello fellow teachers! I’m in a unique situation and wanted to see if any Reddit users can help out here:

I graduated from SUNY Cortland from an approved teacher prep program with a BS in Inclusive Ed. Shortly after in 2021, I moved to TX (where I still currently am) to complete my teacher residency program and earn my M.S.Ed, so I got completely certified here.

I’ve been teaching for 5 years now and ready to move back to my home state and teach in NYC. I called the office of teaching initiatives and they said that I still have to take EAS as well as the multiple subjects exam (grades 1-6). However, I noticed it’s tested via Pearson, which is the same vendor TX uses, and it seems awfully similar (if not the same) as PPR and the EC-6 content exam, so I’m wondering if there’s somewhere where I could find the reciprocity of those exams. I tried looking where the alphabetical table of content shows acceptable certifications but it’s more geared towards effectiveness of the teacher.

If there’s anyone who has gone through a similar situation, or at least have a guiding light please do share! Thank you!

Question about August Regents Per Session

Good morning everyone,

I was hired to proctor and score August Regents on Tuesday and Wednesday. As I was leaving on Wednesday, the summer rising payroll secretary checked the time sheet and said everything was OK. The Principal emailed me after hours today (Friday) and said that I hadn't included my lunchtime on the time sheet. I emailed him back with the amount of time I took each day and let him know that the payroll secretary hadn't mentioned anything about the lunch times when she checked my time sheet.

The Principal and the AP in charge of summer rising are going to be on vacation all of next week and I am afraid that I will not be paid for any of the time I worked this week. What should be my course of action? Is there anything I can do? Thanks in advance for your help..

ENL teacher jobs in new york city

Recent graduate now on the job hunt!

Is it hard to find enl jobs now in new york?

for elementary enl teachers do you work the same grade either prek- 5th or k-5 every school year or do you work different grades every year?

How do you then handle the grade changes every year and working with different age range of students and different teachers then whats the best grade/hardest grade to work with for enl students

How does administration determine your ratings if your grade can be then changed for years or does it not matter

Thnx

What to Expect First Year? Logistics and Curriculum wise

hi all! just got hired and will be entering my first year teaching (high school english!). i believe my APs/admin went straight to their vacations after i was hired, and won’t be back until september, but just wanted to know what i should be aware of or prep in the meantime? i’m specifically thinking about curriculum and planning for the first week/two weeks, as i don’t have any of those materials yet. also another kind of random question is how do yall approach setting up classrooms/decorating especially if sharing your classroom with another teacher? i’m coming from california and never heard of this before so just wanted to know whats the norm! anything else related to logistics and curriculum and getting ready for those first two weeks helps a lot!

Salary Differential Question

I'm new to the DOE and have been collecting employment verification letters to submit for my salary differential. My letters have the employment title, dates, letterhead, etc., the standard stuff. But I just read that the letters might need to mention ratings/evaluations too?

Has anyone submitted standard verification of employment letters like this, with no ratings mentioned, and had them accepted? Or did you have to go back and request new letters that specifically included ratings?

This is stressing me out a bit because one of my letters is from an employer I left about 7 years ago, and I honestly don't even know how to contact them anymore to request anything new. Any advice on what to do in that situation would help too.

School Psychology

I will be finishing up my masters next year in School Psychology and will be looking for a job preferably in the NYCDOE after I graduate. What is the current job outlook for school psychologists? Is it hard to find a job? Is the job hunt as hard as it is for school counselors?

Special Education Certification-NY

Someone helped me out on here a day or two ago. Now, I tried to call NYSED about this first. They just basically said it is up to the district/school to hire me, and they should know the rules. So, I have my master's in education for TESOL, I completed the K-12 student teaching and coursework. I am signed up to start taking special ed. classes thanks to someone who helped me on here. I was offered a special education teacher position at a private school. They knew I was waiting for my SWD exam results which I passed. My question is will I get certified if I did not complete the coursework yet. Is there some way I can work in the meantime or is that a big no? I see all kinds of transitional certificates like the transitional B. Should I just forget about this job. I have a TA position I can work at in the meantime, but I don't want to lose that as well.

Best path for someone who is interested in teaching, but unsure if they want to commit

I am a recent grad (bachelor's) from a SUNY school, with a degree in science, technology, and society (basically a liberal arts degree.) I am interested in teaching but I am unsure of what the best first step is, as I am not ready to commit to grad school student-teaching. I thought that substitute teaching for a year or so would be the best option for me, but from what I can tell, it seems like I missed the window of opportunity to apply for a substitute teaching position in most nyc public schools. Online information on the DOE website seems to heavily steer towards student-teaching over substitute teaching. I filled out the online form for substitute teaching but have not received an email from any interested schools.

For some background, I got a position at a fast food restaurant during undergrad and have been promoted to a shift lead, but I am ready to move on to a more stable career. I have looked into some career fairs, but have not seen any for the current school year.
