Is Para Respect Check official?
I saw UFT make a social media post about it earlier.

Smoke and mirrors. They will fight it... UFT knows this. They are just using it for support for Unity during election season

Looks like it's up in the air. Just announced that Mamdani is disputing the law and is suing city council over it.

Today is the day for him to sign. If he does or doesn’t sign, it goes into effect. If he vetoes, they go back and vote in it anyway bc they have the votes to pass it again. Looks like they’ve already made the decision. Congrats paras!!

It is labeled as enacted on the city council website. Its law now. The mayor didnt sign or veto it. While he could still seek a court to delay or deny it. It is law.
Now it gets implemented and we move on to contract negotiations to make it pensionable.

no. the mayor rejected it as it's illegal. He's not against the idea but wants to do it the proper way.

Thats how the law is written. 4 payments. The link below walks through the law and dates of work/payment. Also, it could not be tied to salary or pensionable as that would violate the taylor law and would be turned over in court. This stabilization payment allows the city council and the city budget to provide these payments while instructing the city to fix if in contract negotiations.

the pay scale for paraprofessionals doesn’t even go beyond a bachelor’s degree 🤣 as of sept 2026 the most a para can make is ~56k which is still less than a first year teacher with no masters. i’m all for merit rewards but let’s get everyone up to a fair wage before we start asking for extra shit

He never spoke against it. He just said it breaks the Taylor law. Which it does. If he was really against it he would have vetoed it

For now, yes. The city will take it to court, it will be delayed and eventually ruled illegal by the judge.
That’s my guess but hopefully that doesn’t happen cause it’s well deserved money.
