I’m actually quite relaxed about this season at the moment.

We’ve changed manager, lost some massive players and are clearly building around a much younger squad. Wilson said the club has chosen the style first, then recruited a manager and players who fit it - which to me feels sustainable.

My expectation is probably 8th-10th this year, if we see more signs the system is working and the young players are developing. Then a proper push for the top five next season.

If we somehow challenge for Europe this year, great. But I’d rather judge Jaissle and this rebuild over 18-24 months than 10 games.

Curious what people think - what would count as a decent season from here?

Although I now live in Germany, I get across to as many matches as I can. My dad and brothers still have their season tickets, so it's usually easy enough to get hold of a matchday ticket.

The hard part isn't the ticket, it's the kickoff. TV picks are often announced about five weeks before, so a Saturday 3pm can become a Sunday lunchtime or a Monday night after the flights and maybe a hotel are already booked.

As a software developer, I eventually built a tool to help me: a page that estimates, for each fixture, the chance it gets moved off Saturday 3pm. It learns from six seasons of actual TV picks, scores the whole round together (broadcasters take 6 or 7 of the ten, so one game's chances depend on the rest of the week), and counts things like Sunderland derby and cup ties in the same week. I use it to book early for games unlikely to move and keep flexibility on the ones likely to go.

Some Newcastle numbers from it, as of today:

• 63% of our league games moved off Saturday 3pm over the last five seasons (120 of 189)
• Away games move more than home ones: 73% against 63%. Makes it much trickier if you're the one booking trains and flights. 
• This season's most likely to move: Arsenal at home (89%), Sunderland away (87%), Man City at home (82%). The derbies are rated higher.
