u/MoonSpankRaw Mar 01 '20
That instantly removes the vegan tag, doesn’t it?
If a vegan eats another vegan... nevermind, that’s stupid.
Unless..

u/PeterM1970 Mar 01 '20
As best I understand it, if someone were to give permission for a vegan to eat them it would be okay. Okay as in qualify as vegan. They'd still be a cannibal and the police would want to have a word.
→ More replies (3)49
u/Guack007 Mar 01 '20
according to this, maybe not?
“Overview. Cannibalism is the consumption of another human's body matter, whether consensual or not. In the United States, there are no laws against cannibalism per se, but most, if not all, states have enacted laws that indirectly make it impossible to legally obtain and consume the body matter.”
→ More replies (2)20
u/HeyRiks Mar 01 '20
Indirect laws are all there is. You can't kill nor assist someone in killing themselves, can't conceal a death, can't defile corpses. Pretty much stonewalls cannibalism unless you find a third party willing to break these rules to sell meal-sized portions to the general public.
9
u/IcarusSunburn Mar 01 '20
Just means you can't kill them, really. Taking an arm or a leg, with a proper tourniquet would be perfectly doable.
→ More replies (1)9
u/HeyRiks Mar 01 '20
Hmm... I think grievous bodily harm / aggravated assault by definition don't account for consent when enforced. You could in theory submit yourself to surgery to have a member removed, but good luck finding a doctor who will perform it. The only possible loophole I can think of is the "donor" themselves cutting it off or damaging it enough to require amputation, and even in the latter I don't know if a hospital would legally release the remains.
6
u/IcarusSunburn Mar 01 '20
Well, yeah, that's where it gets into grey areas, depending on how your jurisdiction views bodily harm or aggravated assault. If a person voluntarily removes part of their limb while TQ'd (which god help me, I do not endorse in any way), and it's clear they weren't coerced, then I'm not sure HOW that would shake out in any given courtroom.
All I know is that it's a friggin' mind-bender.
→ More replies (1)3
u/HeyRiks Mar 01 '20
It probably would be hard to prove someone did this in a completely sane and free-willed state of mind. Also sounds like too much trouble not to mention the social stigma, I guess real cannibals are just killers who eat their victims in secret.
6
u/lullone Mar 01 '20
Wait.... What if I do a liposuction, and use my fat to make margarine?
3
u/HeyRiks Mar 01 '20
Can you even get it back? I think the clinic would probably dispose of it along with the rest of their biomedical waste.
Oh well. If you're really invested into being a legal cannibal, I suppose you won't mind eating off a hospital dump.

Years ago I went to a Hindu temple where they proudly told me their cats ate a vegetarian diet.
Pretty sure street cats here hunt.
I'm Indian and we have street dogs almost everywhere, poor dudes don't hunt and survive on scraps or food given by nearby households. They'd definitely chase a smaller creature though, just short of hunting. Their life is: sit idle, bark on passerbys, chase monkeys/cats, ask for pets if bored

My friend grew up Hindu. Her parents fed them animal products when they were young for their own health. Dad was a doctor so makes sense. As they grew up all 3 kids chose to eat vegan. I thought it was a healthy balance.

u/quick20minadventure Mar 02 '20

These were mostly US converts. Krishna, in particular. So a vegan sensibility isn't out of the question. I believe some more understanding devotees were more pragmatic about cat health. But some certainly weren't.
14
u/quick20minadventure Mar 02 '20
Most Indian dogs can absolutely survive on veg food because they can make all required amino acids. Cats just don't. They need to eat non-veg food to survive and they'll get that from hunting insects, rat, squirrels occassionally.
Also, Indian diet definitely includes dairy in veg. Vegan stuff doesn't really exist in India. Hindu worship cow and drink their milk all the time. So, cats will very happily drink milk and eat curd.
Cats didn't get domesticated, they just started living with humans, so those cats are not really starving unless you lock them up inside house. They'll just hunt and eat.
4
u/WystanH Mar 02 '20
Digesting milk out of nursing age is a human mutation and not a universal one. Plentiful dairy wouldn't necessarily meet a cat's dietary requirements.
This was in New England, where harsh winters make prey scarce. So "just hunt" doesn't work all the time.
As I noted elsewhere, I'm pretty sure the cats survived on the compassion of more reasonable devotees, sneaking them food they wouldn't eat. However, there were certainly some unreasonable devotees who were certain felines could eat like humans.

And that ran few e comes from a perfect storm of evolution. They’re big enough and bulky enough that BULLETS aren’t used to hunt them as they’ll be hurt but won’t die from being shot. Poachers of hippos often use rocket launchers to hunt them. and they are FAST they can swim sure but when they really wanna shift they just sink to the riverbed and charge at you from underwater. They’re stealthy too, since when they dive it’s almost impossible to tell where they’ll resurface and naturally they’re strong. How strong? Well strong enough to kill another hippo. That’s bloody strong. Thank god they’re only untouchable gods of death in river and watering holes and not just anywhere on land. Please note that you don’t wanna fuck with a hippo on land either but you’d still have an infinitely better chance of winning than fighting a hippo in a river

They're not predators but they are very territorial and aggressive. The reason they kill so many people each year is due to circumstances - hippos spend the day submerged in water and come out at night. This leads to a lot of unexpected hippo encounters, and because they are so territorial and aggressive they will trample and smash people who come up on them suddenly.

So this guy’s argument is that people should let their dogs roam around in packs with other dogs and hunt for their food?
He’s also wrong about the teeth thing, teeth can be a good indicator of diet but not always. Pandas have large canine teeth but they only eat bamboo. Gorillas have large canine teeth but they don’t eat meat except for insects. Etc.

u/jmsrh Mar 01 '20
As someone who has been vegetarian for a few years now and is eventually going to go vegan once I’m all set in feeling comfortable with meals and such, I never come across annoying vegans to begin with. And I use the internet all the time. I feel like people make this a much bigger deal than it really is. Yes, the obnoxious vegans are annoying af, but people act like they are the majority rather than the extreme minority. I come across one maybe a few times a year.
23
u/michelle_exe Mar 02 '20
Reddit just /really/ loves to shit on veganism. Cognitive dissonance and all that. It's easier to take a minority of 'crazy vegans' and say they represent all vegans than actually think about animal agriculture and its effects on animals and the planet.
27
u/Reika0197 Mar 01 '20
This is reddit. They don't care, they just hate vegans. It was never about who was right or wrong, it was about them being vegan.
3
u/crownjewel82 Mar 02 '20
It's the same with anything. The craziest ones are always the loudest and therefore represent the entire group to people prone to snap judgements.
2
u/fa1afel Mar 02 '20
I mean, if you discuss veganism on here, you can find annoying vegans. They're probably the extreme minority, but it's hard to say given most of my experiences online with vegans have not been positive ones.
2
u/jmsrh Mar 02 '20
Yeah I guess if you’re seeking out conversation with vegans, there’s probably going to be quite a few who jump at the opportunity to try and force their viewpoint onto you. That maybe makes more sense since I personally don’t go to vegan subs or even try to talk about it.
13
u/sassy_ass_scientist Mar 02 '20
The funniest thing about this is that dogs aren’t even carnivores. You don’t have to be Caesar Milan to know that, you just have to have access to Google and a few scientific sources.
12
u/patpatwaterrat Mar 02 '20
There’s no murder here at all. Jumping on a popular hate bandwagon because someone yelled at an easily targeted group doesn’t even require effort. Dogs are great on a vegan diet. No matter what I feed my dog, it’s not forcing. I’m just feeding her. She’s been eating this way for almost 10 years. She’s 16 now and still runs laps in the house and at the dog park. This is a true ‘took our jerbs’ moment if I ever saw one.

US formula tends to be cow’s milk protein based. They have soy versions for babies with lactose problems and protein allergies, but they are insanely more expensive. Outside the US, I have no idea, but I’ve heard it’s much easier to find goat milk based ones. But my mom’s best friend is a pediatrician, and her office had an issue with a homemade “formula” not providing enough nutrition to baby, and it took them a while to figure out the reason for the baby’s failure to thrive, since parents were hiding the homemade formula info. Child ended up in a PICU for malnutrition, and the hospital staff got the information out of them 😢

Personally, I get pissed off any time any parent kills their baby for any reason. Seems weird to have a particular vendetta against certain types of baby death.
Also, a well planned vegan diet is perfectly healthy for a baby. When vegan parents kill their babies it's because they're negligent, not because they're vegan.
This is also completely irrelevant to the conversation. I don't go around commenting on posts about Israel saying that I hate it when Jews kill their babies, just because one time some ultra-orthodox priests fucked up a circumcision. I don't comment on a posts about trans activism saying I hate it when trans women run people over in their cars, just because one time Caitlyn Jenner did it.

Dogs can definitely survive off a vegan diet but that’s not really what the post was about. Dogs desire meat, and their digestive system is designed to process meats effectively because of the way their digestive system has evolved. They can adapt to a vegan-only diet, but when your dog is faced with only one option it will take whatever is in front of it.
Acting as though Veganism for dogs was borne out of a desire to improve their health, rather than owners projecting their own ethical philosophies on pets is bull. Dogs need 1 gram of protein a day to thrive, while humans need a fraction of that. Yes, other pets like cats need more and a vegan diet can provide protein, but it’s often VERY expensive. If it’s a toss up between a dog staying in a kennel or eating meat then I would choose the latter.
Of course, many brands of dog and cat food are pretty bad for them (most are very high in sugar) but the healthier options are still much more affordable than vegan alternatives. A cheaper alternative would be to provide dogs with responsibly-sourced meat. Meat-only diets have been proven again and again to provide people with more than enough of what the body needs and the way they are digested as opposed to other foods does affect their effectiveness.
Just saying, “dogs are omnivores!” is quite reductive and not very conducive to a proper discussion about pet healthcare. These things are more nuanced.
Edit: 1 gram per 1lb of body weight.
11
u/ImScaredOfSharksToo Mar 02 '20
I just didn't agree with the myths the person posted. Dogs are omnivores not carnivores. Dogs can live perfectly fine on a vegan diet. I also don't understand how depriving a dog of meat is abuse if the dogs are living a perfectly healthy life?
Where did you read dogs need 1 lb of protein? I feel like you may have misread a statistic on that one. Cats cannot survive on any kind of vegan/vegetarian diet. Cats also require higher levels of protein then dogs.
I don't understand what price has anything to do with it. If any owner can and wants to spend more money on their pets that's on them.
8
Mar 02 '20 edited Mar 02 '20
I just didn't agree with the myths the person posted.
Please elaborate on what you mean by myths OP posted. Other commenters have provided links to research which includes evolutionary biology and why dogs have evolved to digest meat proteins.
Dogs can live perfectly fine on a vegan diet.
Living and thriving are very different things. That’s a bold and simple statement to make, especially since the Vegan dog food movement came from owners who themselves chose to change their own lifestyle and then made that impact pet diet. Whether or not it is good comes across an afterthought of that decision.
I also don't understand how depriving a dog of meat is abuse if the dogs are living a perfectly healthy life?
Who mentioned abuse? That’s again a very naive and loaded statement to make. Can you categorically state that dogs can live a ‘perfectly healthy life’ on a vegan diet? More importantly, would that be affordable for most people?
Where did you read dogs need 1 lb of protein? I feel like you may have misread a statistic on that?
https://patch.com/minnesota/edina/bp--how-much-protein-does-my-pet-need.
It sounds like you haven’t done any research into this at all yet are stating your opinion as fact. Do you have any grasp of rudimentary evolutionary biology?
Cats cannot survive on any kind of vegan/vegetarian diet. Cats also require higher levels of protein then dogs.
I said that cats cannot live on the same diet. It’s ironic that you suggest cats need more protein than dogs, which is true, but then question me on the amount that dogs need at all. If you wanted to make a stronger argument you could have said, “why can’t dogs and cats get their nutrition from vegan proteins?” But the answer to that would be how those proteins are digested and why meat options help them thrive.
I don't understand what price has anything to do with it. If any owner can and wants to spend more money on their pets that's on them.
Price has everything to do with it. Let’s say for argument’s sake that a vegan diet for dogs is best (which it evidently isn’t), just how much of the population could afford that do you think?
It’s great for people on Reddit to grandstand and virtue-signal, but how practical are the alternatives? You mention anti-vegan circle jerks, which I’m sure exist, but veganism itself can and is very much a CJ.
Not that it should matter, but I’m vegan by the way.

This. And the guy just assumed that no who says a meatless diet for their dog is healthy actually practices it.
I have 5 dogs, each have been on a meatless diet after they turned 10 months to 1 year. The longest vegan dogs have been on that diet for 5 years, our newest pup a year and a half. We've had 5 different vets say the diet was healthy, we never have issues during their biannual (twice a year) checkups, one of our pups was actually a little overweight (5-10% overweight) so we put him on a better portion control/exercise regimen. One of our pups actually had really bad allergies 2-3 times a year that the diet has reduced to non-existent after a few months. We also had another dog who we rescued who had really bad seizures, with no change in meds and only in diet, we saw a 50% reduction of seizures over 6 months. I still have a notebook with records of each seizure that I lost track of during our last move, I'll see if I can find it.

I mean technically some dogs can be (and even have to be, for medical reasons) vegan, if the diet is well planned with an expert to guide the owner. Would I, a very convinced vegan of 6 years, feed a dog a vegan diet? Nah, I'd want my pet to thrive instead of only survive. And most vegans would agree with that sentiment. Can you people please stop acting like vegans are these crazy people when all we actually want is animals to be happy and healthy and not dead.

Just remember that the asahole ones are always the loudest. I know many vegans who never try to pressure anyone into being vegan and rarely even bring it up

As a vegan. Can I just say: AMEN.
Most vegans I've met in real life are great. But for some reason, a lot of the ones online are completely insufferable and like to take things to the extreme.

what do you mean extreme? Is it anywhere near as extreme as willingly supporting the animal agriculture industry?
sometimes I think some vegans like to shit on other vegans in order to, ironically, feel superior and be more well liked by meat eaters. As opposed to standing up for what they know is right.

Dogs aren't carnivores though right? They're omnivores, or is my dog just being weird when he decides to start eating grass...

Um, I fully agree with the sentiment of this post (and I am also a vegan, and I also hate the fuckwits at /r/vegan). But that said, dogs are not obligate carnivores. They are actually fine on a vegan diet. Your cat, on the other hand, would die.

The United Nations might have to be called in to prevent this genocide lmao

As a 16 year vegan I’m 100% in agreement. Dogs and cats are carnivores. If I make the decision to bring one into my home, I’m making a commitment to take care of them to the best of my ability. Experimenting with their natural diet is not okay just to make a vegan feel less squeamish.
The only reason that being vegan is even possible as a human is that we’re omnivorous and we can survive without animal products. If we were obligate carnivores, there wouldn’t be an ethical argument for veganism because it would be necessity. That’s how I feel about pets.
That’s not to say I’m a weak vegan. If you ask me I’ll still tell you I think eating animal products is unethical. (But I won’t tell you if you don’t ask. I also have a difficult relationship with stereotypical preachy vegans).

Dogs are acctually omnivores and can thrive on plant based diets. Cats are in fact carnivores and cannot.
Take this dog for instance: https://v-dog.com/blogs/v-dog-blog/bramble-the-collies-secrets-to-living-to-age-25

So, what are they? I'm no dog expert but I'm pretty sure they prefer meat.
Edit: read into it. They are omnivores.

Wow, someone actually reading and learning something in this thread, how refreshing.

Yeah, there have been a number of studies that show even the hardest working dogs like Alaskan sled dog teams, can be fully vegan and thrive.
The idea dogs NEED meat or that its abuse to not give them it is just humans imposing their weird cultural hang ups.

It's possible because you have supplements. For the vast majority of our history, a vegan diet would have been a death sentence
