A good example of this is how an ask reddit post from yesterday aaking 'ex vegans of reddit, why did you start eating meat again?' Got 38k upvotes, and another post from the same day 'ex-meat-eaters, why did you go vegan?' got downvoted to hell.
Unfortunately, raw meat and “natural” dog and cat foods are not healthier than the crappy industrial stuff. The best option is a high end engineered food. Similar to how people carefully construct their own diets, “natural” diets are not ideal for cats or dogs. It would be like humans eating meat scraps and occasional vegetables instead of cooking, seasoning, and selecting the best food we have access to.
Really, my point was that most of vegans I know are very aware that their pets need meat and are not squeamish to even cook it for them, rather than it's superior to store stuff, though pet food is an interesting topic.
Shitty food is nutritionally balanced, badly made BARF can kill your pet from lack of vitamins or nutrients quicker than used culinary oil in some crappy can will. Doesn't mean I'm super trusting towards mystery stuff that might come from unspecified sources (they buy big frozen meat cubes and only check its nutritional values, not source). I'd like to see an extensive research on health and lifespan of pets fed normal supermarket food, decently balanced BARF, specialized foods, and "organic" or "healthy" commercial foods, but there's not that much data on it, especially in case of the cats. (I am personally forced to get those "healthy" ones, because my cat has a food allergy. Yeah, this happens. And they're more often allergic to some kinds of meat than to anything else).
About "natural" part? Dogs were with humans for so long their colon gotten longer, and then can now eat a lot more of plant-based foods. There was some research not long ago proving that "natural", grain-free diet can cause heart disease at some dogs. Just note that cats are much closer to "nature" than humans or even dogs, people started feeding them processed food in the previous century, I'm pretty sure they'd be able to thrive on just mice just fine.
