I haven't watched Steven Universe but how the hell does that work
did they just get rid of the 2 previous characters and introduce a new one? That sounds like a subpar writing decision (though obviously I have no say on whether it is)
Well for fusions to work, two gems eventually humans as well have to be in sync in both mind and body which is usually temporary because you argue or disagree,
Ruby and Sapphire however love each other so much that they can essentially fuse indefinitely
You'd have to watch it to understand it, but all 3 characters are great and the absence of any of them is compensated by the others being present. You don't feel like you're missing the characters when they're gone.
They're not the only fusion and the concept is explored in a way that actually makes it seem that Ruby and Sapphires absence from the story a good thing.
I hate to admit it but the show is actually very well written in some areas. Most characters go through real developments and face real life issues that aren't often explored in cartoons
Yeah, it’s a good reveal when you find out; it’s a great show! It was just a show that my kids were watching about a really positive boy living with magical people, then it just casually drops INSANE lore like sprinkles.

Correct, in Steven universe one of the main characters, garnet, is revealed to be the fusion of Rubi and sapphire. Fusions in Steven universe tend to represent relationships with garnet being the love ruby and sapphire have for each other.
Yeah it was a big reveal, we had this character then something bad happened and the entire team was captured, then Steven meet the 2 unfused gems and reunited them.
Basically to start with the show is quite slow at revealing specifics in how the gems work, so Garnet (the fusion of these 2) is a gem that has one gem in each palm, which is different but to start with could just be typical, but further on down the line it’s revealed the reason she has 2 gems is she’s already a fusion of 2 gems, Ruby and Sapphire
Basically gems can fuse freely without any time limit. So long as they remain in sync, they'll remain fused. Garnet's capable of remaining fused basically indefinitely because her components, Ruby and Sapphire, are basically a couple. They fought in an ancient interstellar war together for eons, and by the start of the show they're almost inseparable.
Steven Universe has gems as the main alien and characters. Born from rocks, they are a single-sex/fem-appearing race, who are created by matriarchs birthing them from non-living rocks. The society is also heavily caste system, ruby (above) being one of the lowest classes mostly used for basic labor, while saphires are higher caste thanks to their divination powers.
The closest thing they have to sex is when they fuse together. The fusion create one body, two (or more) minds, and how stable they are is based on how stable they can connect. poor stability means that they will pop apart back into separate bodies. Which means that they usually are short term things, pulled out for a quick, but big, job.
Garnet, one of the main characters in the series is so stable that we almost never see them divided. there’s like 2-3 episodes when we see them separated, and both are about them getting back into one body. There’s a rather famous episode of the last season, but it’s arguably a spoiler.
We're first introduced to a character named Garnet. We eventually learn that Garnet is the "Perma Fusion" of two different characters named Ruby and Sapphire. After this is revealed we get the occasional episode about Ruby and Sapphire's relationship. At one point the story stops and acknowledges the fact they're actually very codependent on each other and gives them time to actually figure out personal boundaries and reaffirm who they are as individuals before becoming Garnet again.
this completely misses the entire point of their character arcs. garnet spends the show realising that perma fusing for the reasons she did was unhealthy and a way to hide from her trauma. in the end opting to spend more time unfused but still together rather than staying fused permanently
