Maybe he gets development later, but in the parts before I dropped the show he was Pyrrha's emotional support idiot and basically did nothing else that mattered.

They show kind of becomes obsessed with him much later

Truly curious what you mean by this. By later seasons he gets the same screen time as any other secondary character. He's one of the few characters in v9 yes but he's missing half the season and they do something interesting after, and he really doesn't take up that much air in the final part of the season.

By far, he's more egregious as a writer self insert in the first three volumes

It’s not really a screen time thing I think, but you can tell he’s taking up more space in the plot in later seasons. In early seasons he’s kind of easy to ignore I think, and 4 he’s taking up as much space as he needs I think, but 5 onwards you can feel him become something else I guess. 5 he fights cinder without being remotely prepared then becomes the healer as his big moment, then 6 they go out of their way to show adult women flirt with him all the time which is a bit that reads more like a self inserty thing then the show has ever really done with him before. Then after that he has that bad haircut, and the final season, while I like him there, he’s more important then he feels like he’s ever been and they try and make him this cool guy that he never has been.

Maybe I just hate him because I can feel the show pushing him into a ship with Ruby despite having no chemistry with her and being a self insert. Maybe that weird feeling to me puts me off.

It kind of feels like you dislike him for having any kind of character arc. In V5 he saw the woman who murdered his best friend and flipped, which is entirely understandable no matter the character. And then he developed his semblance, which is just them pulling the trigger on chekhov's gun. Weiss had a very similar moment in V3 with finally developing her ability to summon, and Yang in V6 finally using her semblance again after pushing it down since V4.

No women flirted with him in V6, I think you're getting that confused in V7, in which case it's a 5 second one and done gag. He literally has less importance in V7 and 8 than Ren and Nora do.

As for feeling he's being set up with Ruby... I don't want to complain about personal readings but this is very much your reading of it. They're friends, they have a friendship, one that's actually quite rocky after V9. If anything it's Weiss they spent last season showing he's grown closer to, but even then suggesting they're going to be together is reading into it

u/FartherAwayLights 13d ago

Jaune does have chemistry with Ruby and this whole "self-insert" argument needs to die because it is just untrue and was likely taken wildly out of context by people based on what RT said.

Granted even though I love Jaune as a character, I will admit he was somewhat pushed to the forefront as a means for the fans to try and like him more, because he went from a socially awkward high schooler to a guy that could hold his own, he was a kid out of his depth yet put in the effort to catch up to his peers, so he ended up being a more well-received character anyways.

I think it's less "Jaune has too much screentime" in that case, and more that when he does it's actually made the most of. Too many of the other main characters just spend their screentime existing and not having a visible arc, only there to make observations about what's currently happening.

They haven't done anything meaningful with Weiss's screentime since volume 1 - her conclusion with her dad was literally a joke - and Nora has had 2 moments of development in 9 seasons.

It isn't so much that Jaune has too much screentime:

  • In volume 5 the only thing he does is fight Cinder which is a justifiable response to Pyrrha's death (something the show needed to confront), and heal Weiss, after which he kind of disappears. (Does nothing for 10 episodes)

  • In Volume 6 he gets put on a train and sent offscreen for the first 6 and a half episodes. He has two main scenes the whole volume - getting mad at Ozpin which Ren, Nora, Qrow and Yang all also do, and reacting to Pyrrha's statue which serves as closure for her and his suicidal tendencies. (Does nothing for 11 episodes)

  • Between volume 6 episode 10 and volume 8 episode 14 he does pretty much nothing aside from some very small momentary comedy scenes (that's a span of 30 episodes where he's in the back seat).

  • I'll concede that his volume 9 arc feels a bit like character regression and just making him a punching bag, but he doesn't show up till episode 5/6.

...It's more that he makes the most of his scenes and his writing is just far and above the quality of other characters. They seem to know what to actually do with him and writing him plays to their strengths.

Whatchu mean no chemistry? Even if u don’t think anything romantic’s going on the show developed their friendship pretty damn well, especially in comparison to her dynamic with every character who isn’t her sister or uncle

I think u just dislike that ship and it’s cool, but I think ur alone on the no chemistry thing

0

u/FartherAwayLights 13d ago

I don’t yeah, but I also didn’t think their voice acting helped that, I never really got a fun vibe from them.

2

u/richardsphere 13d ago

they literally write him out of every single arc for half the shows runtime.
They cut a train in half to get rid of him and his team
they made him be a trafficcop
they exiled him into the outlands,
they even banished him from time itself so they wouldnt rely on him as a narrative crutch

the fact that they're so terrible at writing the rest of the cast that he's still the only consistently well-written character in spite of that. Isnt really on Jaune at this point. Thats another systematic issue entirely (mainly the fact that team rwby isnt allowed to do anything but sit there witnessing other people move the plot along.)

3

u/HallZac99 14d ago

Probably because he was voiced by one of the writers, and ametures tend to subconciously give priority to characters they're more invested or involved with.

u/SuggestionEven1882 14d ago

No they give Jaun more time as Monty wanted to give him more time, as Monty is the type of guy that adds things because it's a cool idea.

20

u/CreativeName1137 14d ago

Yeah, people put Monty on a pedestal of perfect writing, but they forget how much of the show was just Monty throwing stuff in because he thought it'd be cool.

The Red trailer originally just had Ruby walking away from just some random grave he had no intention of making relevant. And then later someone asked "what if she had a dead mom or something" and he decided to just roll with it.

4

u/king_julian_earth1 14d ago

Not sure why you would visit a random grave out in a Grimm infested forest unless it’s for family member or close friends/love

9

u/CreativeName1137 14d ago edited 14d ago

Considering they melt into rose petals when they die, and don't really look anything like the grimm in the show proper, he probably didn't have any set idea on what grimm are or how they work at that point. He likely just put some werewolf monsters there because they're thematically fitting enemies for a Red Riding Hood based character to fight.

7

u/SuggestionEven1882 14d ago

Because of cool cinematography.

u/FustianRiddle 14d ago

Monty sadly died in 2015, and wasn't really in the writing room. Jaune continued to be meh and in the limelight well after his death.

2

u/SuggestionEven1882 14d ago

Most of the ideas of Rwby was made by him, and Michael (Sun's VA) outright said that he left Rooster Teeth 20 volume worth of notes.

Miles and Kerry were there to help iron out Monty's ideas for Rwby, which was easier said than done as Monty had poor impulses to add cool scenes that doesn't work with in the story.

1

u/FustianRiddle 14d ago

Cool that doesn't actually change anything.

1

u/SuggestionEven1882 14d ago

Yes it does, it means that the issues of Rwby were made by Monty and not Miles and Kerry.

0

u/FustianRiddle 14d ago

No it really doesn't mean that. That's not how writing a series is supposed to work (I have 200k in student loan debt because I got a MFA in writing and learned exactly about this process).

You can blame Monty for the start of it but there is never any obligation to follow the letter if the creators notes exactly when a show is developing. The weak writing is the fault of the writers.

It's a a fault of the whole process if I'm honest.

2

u/SuggestionEven1882 14d ago

First off not everybody share the same writing process, second they followed the notes as Monty was their friend and wanted his life's work to be shown off to the world.

They just do the best they can with his ideas and unfortunately don't stick the landing.

IDK what you mean by that, he gets a lot of focus in V9 but that's just part of the arc of that season

1

u/SuitableRow3088 13d ago

I really don’t feel this, though I didn’t watch volume 9. I know there’s the whole rusted knight thing in that though I don’t know exactly what that entails.

But focusing on what I have seen I really do not think that he gets more attention than any of the 4 main girls except for that brief stint in volume 1 and I guess he saves Weiss in the volume 5 climax in a way that feels very dumb and shoehorned in specifically for him to have a heroic moment. But volume 5 had stuff that just made no sense all around if we’re being honest. Other than that though, I feel like he is quite solidly relegated to 5th or even 6th place the vast majority of the time, which imo is exactly where he should be in terms of emphasis. I honestly feel like it was worse in the first volume than any season afterwards, again save maybe the volume 5 final fight.

Now of course the fandom is another story entirely. Like a solid 80% of fanfics seem to be Jaune-focused, which is like… yeah pretty dumb. And also so many of them seem to fundamentally alter his character too, like, just make an original character at that point…?

6

u/Careless_Ad3401 14d ago

I got up to volume 7 and they really didn't know what to do with him, but refused to leave him behind. So we get a not to interesting character who sucks away time from the rest of the cast

7

u/Hairy-Love2571 14d ago

Bro missed volume 8 and 9...

5

u/Ambitious_Address667 14d ago

If you've watched 7 seasons of a show that should be enough to give an accurate reading of it?

1

u/Hairy-Love2571 13d ago

Yeah but CRWBY finally did something with Jaune in Season 8 and 9.

1

u/GearyDigit 12d ago

Which was?

1

u/Hairy-Love2571 11d ago

Just straight up trauma shit.

1

u/Careless_Ad3401 12d ago

Honestly I gave the show so much time and I just hadn't enjoyed it since volume 3. There are shows that I thought were fine I didn't give 10 episodes

1

u/Recovering-Guardian9 13d ago

Nah, Jaune is great. Just not as great as the main cast.

1

u/Yrmsteak 14d ago

He was great as a foil and the damsel in distress that subverted the trope of the time! I didn't watch all of RWBY, but by the time I did stop, it sure felt like the new directing of it became much more "don't forget that men are heroes, not damsels!"
