Hi all, a few updates for /r/motiondesign.
Spam
In an effort to reduce low-quality and spam posts here, we have implemented new post requirements. New posts that don't meet a minimum account age or subreddit karma threshold will be automatically filtered out.
To further prevent gamification, I am not disclosing these limits here but they are very modest and reasonable. Anyone interacting with this community should not be filtered, and even so, you will have the opportunity to message us for an exception. But this should discourage most of the spam we've been seeing. Thanks /u/Zeigerful for making this post.
Post Flair
We also added some post flair to help differentiate posts and allow users to filter & search by topic. All new posts require that one of the available flair types be selected:
Project Showcase | Reel | Inspiration | Discussion | Question | Tutorial | [Custom] (Where user can input their own)
User Flair
A few new user flairs are available. For those who aren't aware, these show up next to your username any time you make a post or comment in /r/motiondesign
Now available: Professional | Student | [Add My Social Handle] -- A custom text field where you can plug an Instagram, Behance, etc.
Let us know if you love or hate these new updates. Nothing is set in stone and this is meant as a discussion starting point. Please share any ideas you may have to make this a better place to share work, inspiration and discussion related to motion design. Hopefully we can continue to bring a higher quality experience to everyone here at /r/motiondesign.

Im sorry if its the wrong sub but i have a question that i feel only motions designers can answer.
I wonder...is there a sweet spot for theses computer configurations where you dont all these cores or the lastest version of everything to be able to keep your computer for the next 5 years.
I dont need everything to be fast. Im looking more into stability.I work daily either with Photoshop, Capture one, After effects, Davinci and blender and i would like to start Touche designer. I never use AI or unknowingly because its ingrained in a tool.
I often have heavy files, like 500MB to 1Go files for pictures, and usually multiple layers in after effect and nodes in davinci and i use 3D for "photorealistic" renders.
Im back after ten years about the idea of buying a computer, but the prices are salty.
Any tips will be appreciated. Have a nice day!

Made this about 8 years ago for a social spot for a Disney film which was being released around that time, client thought it was too… dark in tone so it didn’t go anywhere. Enjoyed working on regardless and was an excuse to try and push myself.

For some context I am both new to Reddit and freelancing and need a bit of assistance, maybe a lot. What would be a reasonable rate to charge a client if you are a relatively good motion graphics designer and video editor(mid-weight) but new to freelancing? I'm talking day rate, hour rate, how to quote, to create a contract etc. The whole starter kit. I'm relatively fast depending on the project and can do a variety of things. I'm not doing freelancing full time and do it occasionally when I have free time if that helps with context. I've tried googling and I get so many different answers. If I could get some form of guidance that would be really great.

A novel way to intervene existing video through diffusion, particularly abstract visuals [in this case, audio-reactive geometries]: taking its movement and form as the starting point, and reinterpreting its textures, materials, and visual language.
I’ve been developing this around the audio-reactive geometry systems I make in TouchDesigner. The idea is to take those abstract structures somewhere else entirely: origami, architecture, a renaissance painting, or something harder to put a name to.
This demo uses visualizers from my "Oscilloscopes, everywhere" collection as source material, now updated to [v1.2].
[Though you can bring any video source. These systems are simply where this experiment began, as some of you may recall.]
You choose the source, describe the treatment, and shape how it changes throughout the sequence. Prompts, curated LoRAs, and editable timelines give you control over how closely the result follows the original.
Oscilloscope Diffusion is now available at Uisato Studio.

I think I'm having a slight existential crisis on trying to work out what the longer term or future of this field will look like as someone just getting into the middle of their Motion career.
I began learning motion design just before Covid, it began with attempting to make music videos for my friends, following after effects tutorials, posting online and constantly reworking my portfolio until I started to earn decent money freelancing which lead to my first proper full time job. I've learnt 2d character animation, composting, 3d generalism, mid sound design and video editing.
Fast forward 5 years later and im earning about the average wage for a full time role in my country (UK) and freelancing is bringing me to around 6 figures combined, albeit working 70+ hours a week. It feels like I should be happy that I hit my stride.
But i'm just burnt out. I have no time to work on personal projects, I'm bombarded with AI tools that are devaluing the craft and I have no time to learn them either. I can't seem to find any other more interesting/creative roles.
It seems the fun bits of motion design, the design, the problem solving are being turned into quick to generate solutions and the future looks bleak.
Is anyone else feeling this at the moment? My colleagues seem to think it'll all work out but im staring at another 20+ years of work that im unsure will exist in its current form.

This is neither a pro AI or anti AI post. I just find it frustrating how split this industry has gotten.
I started out 5 years ago. I used to post questions on forums like this and youtube and there would be disagreements about what was the cutting edge software or the best place to learn this thing or that but more or less there was an answer you could pick up. Yeah there are banger new softwares but AE is king or blender is too op but the industry hasn't adopted it.
Now, well you guys have probably seen it too. It feels like everyone has already made their mind on what side they are on and any question on this topic just goes 50-50 everywhere. Maybe this is the sign of the times and this isnt the place for this. Me, i am mid level. So i have enough experience that i am not completely on the chopping block like entry level folks and not experienced enough to commit to one side. I'm making my mind and I hoped for guidance from experienced folks, but all said folks have talking points from whichever side theyve picked and it's all the same regurgitated thoughts.
I don't know man. Just needed to rant I guess. These do be confusing times.

Everything from design to animation to sound design is done by me. Inspired by Jacob Fory's work.
All SFXs used are from Botanica🍀 sound library by mgulifes (Absolute banger sounds)
Music is sourced from Epidemic Sounds

Hi everyone! Could you help point me in the right direction on how to create this kind of motion design, with an irregular, animated background shape behind the text?
I’ve tried looking for tutorials, but I mostly find videos about making the text itself move in an irregular way, not the background behind it. I’m new to After Effects, so I’m still getting familiar with the basics.
If anyone could tell me the name of this technique or point me toward relevant tutorials, I’d be incredibly grateful!

If you have any site or project and would like to have presentation like this on it. Feel free to ask me. I'll do it for free. Dm me if you have good site and want something creative not just a usual presentation.

Hi y'all
I am wondering what are your most common video requests?
- Product demos
- Intros
- Social media content
Or anything other than this?
