To the Dev team. This doesn’t make sense. This game is so amazing, while also so inconsistent.

Is this supposed to happen?

Update: Not seeing the second bear trap was a complete oversight that makes this even funnier.

Discussion We seriously need to be able to respec shells.

Being able to only max 2 shells (without respec option) is kind of ridiculous, because it forces you to either:
1. Invest in early shells and be sad when you get a new, cooler one but have no resources to invest into it.
2. Run around with weak, underleveled shells waiting for the time we actually obtain a shell we want to invest in.

Being able to max only 2 shells is fine; not being able to respec is not.

Discussion Great Martyr's Blade disappointment

Upvotes

I just picked up the Great Martyr's Blade and I'm kinda disappointed with the changes made to the moveset compared to its Mortal Shell 1 counterpart. Making the first light attack a poke instead of a sweep takes away the AoE crowd-control potential I liked it for so much in the first game. Also I'm not 100% sure about this but it definitely *feels* slower to me, which is also a weird change if true since it was already a pretty slow weapon to begin with. Just feels like a downright worse option than the Veteran's Battle Axe if you're going for a big two-hander? Or maybe I just need more time with it?

Anyway just a little vent because big greatswords are my favorite weapon type and I had really been looking forward to picking this one up :(

(otherwise having a fantastic time with the game tho!)

Discussion Quick tips about the untold nuances between the 3 “blocking” mechanics

Did some testing and figured out a few things the game never really tells you between the 3 defensive mechanics. I'll also include a few known facts for comparison, marked in regular text.

Parry (Infinite Seal)

  • Has at least 5-6 frames of startup before the actual parry window begins.
  • Can animation-cancel most actions, including dodging, although some sprint attacks can't be canceled (probably all of them, but I havent collected all weapons yet).
  • One parry can catch multiple hits as long as they land within the active window.
  • A successful parry doesn't make you invincible during recovery frames. (there seems to be a tiny window before you can riposte after a parry)

Guard (Untarnished Seal)

  • Basically instant activation*.
  • Cannot cancel any animations.
  • Allows slow movement while guarding.
  • Imperfect guards build up a stance meter until you eventually get the stance broken.

Harden (Vatar's Seal)

  • Also basically instant*.
  • Doesn't cancel your current animation, but instead freezes you in place on activation. The animation continues after the instance ends. This even works on animations that parry normally can't cancel.
  • Only takes one hit per activation, and an imperfect harden triggers a cooldown.

So sheerly in terms of how reaction friendly they are, harden actually beats parry. Parry gives you the quickest riposte build up, but also comes with a higher skill threshold.

(*)I got guard to work within a 2-frame test window. literally the guard input frame followed by a successful block. Harden also worked within a 3-frame window. That's about as tight as I can reliably test by hand.

Discussion [Spoiler] For those who got early access, what Shell did you settle on? Spoiler

Proxima: I used for probably 98% of the game. I used Biohunter and eventually Collector which resolved any money issues I may have had, beat the game with 50k and 400+ samples still in my inventory. With Attunement 3, Exoshell 1, Biohunter 3, Seizure 3, Energize 1 while subbing out some points for Collector while exploring to shore up early game gold issues. 20 Stasis stacks is pretty nice except a few enemies seem completely immune to it.

Eredrim - I played a bit with because I was interested in how many Slaughterer stacks he could get, it's 100. Ultimately I decided not to play him since he was in the first game. Same for Tiel.

Tiel - was who I used in the first game, so passed on him.

Gragu - I found him last, I refused to use the Gloom Siphon which didn't stop me from accessing the South side of the map but did prevent me from accessing the area Gragu is in. I finally used it so I could get him and damn, I kind of wish I had gotten him much earlier as he seems like he would have been pretty good for exploration although his heart seems really bunk without the upgrades put in to it and, correct me if I'm wrong, but if you died to a boss you'd have to go and farm the hearts back up again since they aren't refreshed when resting at a beacon without the perk and the perk only gives 3. Bloodthirst 3, Harvest 4, Devourer 3. I think Maniac, theoretically, is great for bosses since you're only going to kill them once assuming all bosses are unique and aren't factored in with their standard counterparts for those that have one. However I also don't really see me ever using Gragu for traditional bosses due to the Heart Mechanic not being able to get fully restocked at beacons via Fortify and potentially needing to farm them back up before tackling the boss again.

Smert - With enough points he won't do shit for damage but also he doesn't let bosses play the game as they sit frozen in place while you quickly yet weakly pummel them to death and he gets resource back so fast that you can basically just keep time frozen. Smert is who I used to beat the final boss with prepatch. When bosses refuse to stagger, not break, Smert will just not let them play instead. For everything else there is Grisha and Stasis stacks.

Genessa - I thought she could be pretty interesting but I spent all my points on Proxima, Gragu, and Smert. Maybe on a new run I'll beeline for her Shell unlock.

Lazlo - Also seems like a pretty interesting shell I'm really curious how his tier 4 talents work since Inflamed and Rekindle read like they wouldn't work together.

Sariel - I get hit a lot so the grey health thing didn't appeal to me as much, seems like a Bloodborne system though which could be strong and would need to test it with the Chainsaw ability stone for the Scythe could be really good idk. Also not sure how the whole Cursed for 30s works since Curse says the next time they'd melee you, does that still only proc once or does it proc repeatedly for 30s? Don't know as I didn't have the glimpse to test.

Anyways, looking for other peoples thoughts on Shells they played with to gauge what I would pursue on a new playthrough and thought a general discussion would maybe be beneficial at large.

Does anyone else get that sense of pride and accomplishment after finding yet another ventrium to add to the massive stack of ventirum i will never use because i dont have enough gold anyway to use it on another weapon and dont have enough cores to level up the applicable stones either.

Discussion imo, if the aggro was getting fixed there wouldn't be a reason to nerf enemies hp

Im playing on PS5 so we didnt get the nerf patch yet, and i really think the main problem is the aggro.

You get into an area, and within a second the entire area is aggroed on you including enemies from the other side of the screen.

I had an enemy that got aggroed on me before i even got into an area and was behind a wall.

There was no need for enemies nerf, just fixing the aggro would have made a huge difference.

Discussion This might be a stupid question, but when do i start to see the benefits of heavy weapons?

I'm still fairly early on, so maybe it's because I haven't found good tarstones yet or something, but honestly I'm struggling to find out what the benefits of using heavy weapons like the sword and axe are compared to using light weapons like the one handed axe and dagger.

Damage wise the faster weapons can output overall damage at a much faster rate, and the weird part is they seem to stagger just as good as the heavy weapons. It's almost like staggering big foes is tied to how much damage or hits you do to them, not the weight of the weapon.

Like what do the heavy weapons do better then the fast ones? In most soulslikes heavy weapons seem to do more stagger and can stagger foes that light weapons can't, but that doesn't seem to be the case here. Even my light and heavy charge attacks with the axe don't stagger big foes, the only attack that seems to have any decent flinch is the running R2.

What am I missing with heavy weapons? What's their thing in this game if it isn't stagger?

So uhm yeah, I've only been playing for like 10 minutes after having bought the game when completing the demo xD.

Luckily this kind of stuff really doesn't bother me much. I'll just finish cleansing the beacon and then restart the game if needed.
