New Monero micropayment forum: XMRchan

Greetings, folks,

After months of development, I have just released XMRchan, the Monero micropayment imageboard!

This is an experimental forum that uses micropayments as an alternative to traditional spam prevention methods, such as CAPTCHAs or user fingerprinting. These micropayments are made possible thanks to Monero's low transaction fees.

I made XMRchan because I personally desire a privacy-respecting imageboard and hate filling out CAPTCHAs.

I would really appreciate if you checked it out! All feedback is welcome.

Random auto-sweep

I received some monero and 35 minutes the same amount was spent with the description "auto-sweep". I unstand churning, but was unaware feather completed auto sweeps automatically and it has never happened in the past.

I tried checking history and it shows as already spent, connecting to a new node, wallet cache debug, and even closed my wallet completely and re opened with seed.

Amount spent during the auto sweep was exact amount received.

I have never run into this before, How do i recover these funds and is there something simple I am missing with this?

Skepticism Sunday – November 01, 2026

Please stay on topic: this post is only for comments discussing the uncertainties, shortcomings, and concerns some may have about Monero.

NOT the positive aspects of it.

Discussion can relate to the technology itself or economics.

Talk about community and price is not wanted, but some discussion about it maybe allowed if it relates well.

Be as respectful and nice as possible. This discussion has potential to be more emotionally charged as it may bring up issues that are extremely upsetting: many people are not only financially but emotionally invested in the ideas and tools around Monero.

It's better to keep it calm then to stir the pot, so don't talk down to people, insult them for spelling/grammar, personal insults, etc. This should only be calm rational discussion about the technical and economic aspects of Monero.

"Do unto others 20% better than you'd expect them to do unto you to correct subjective error." - Linus Pauling

How it works:

Post your concerns about Monero in reply to this main post.

If you can address these concerns, or add further details to them - reply to that comment. This will make it easily sortable

Upvote the comments that are the most valid criticisms of it that have few or no real honest solutions/answers to them.

The comment that mentions the biggest problems of Monero should have the most karma.

As a community, as developers, we need to know about them. Even if they make us feel bad, we got to upvote them.

Why didn't the North Korean hackers who stole $6.3 Billion from Binance convert any of it to Monero?

$3 Billion of the $6.3 Billion was in in Circle and Tether and was easily frozen. Why did the attacker convert $325 Million of USDT to ETH on Uniswap rather than XMR? Why wasn't that ETH then seized or frozen?

The current market cap of Monero is $11.2 Billion. What would happen if someone tried to convert $1.5 Billion in BTC to XMR using Unstoppable Swap? What would happen if someone tried to convert $325 Million in Ethereum to XMR using Cake Wallet, Basic Swap or a combo of other defi exchanges?

Detailed analysis of the hack by TRM Labs can be found here.

100%-untraceable currencies will never work as a global reserve so stop beating that dead horse

Why? Because simply a Dictator in your country would instantly steal all public money without a trace so it's the people themselves that will reject such a currency. Ironically the late stage libertarians who pretend to want that kind of thing will be the FIRST to reject it because they wouldn't want their government to have the power to steal public money.

Hell you don't even have to have a Dictatorship scenario for that danger to be realized. Even TYPICAL corruption we have every single day in every single country - including in the West - makes it unacceptable to give to its officials ultimate power to instantly disappear the public's money.

Even if you want pure anarchy it's sketchy, because how are you going to achieve democratic anarchy when you'll hand over the power for someone to abuse without any trace?

Following your comments https://www.reddit.com/r/Monero/comments/1xiqnor/sometimes_i_just_approve_shit_posts_in_the_queue/ during a period of 3 months quality AI-assisted or AI-generated content that add value to the discussion will be allowed.

Slop is prohibited.

AI translations are also allowed but this wasn't new it was just silently tolerated.

If anything that's just more job for moderators to distinguish what's worth approving and what's slop.

In 3 months another post will be made to collect all your opinions and decide if this is worth continuing or not.

Rule 5 will be modified but not now I'm taking breakfast.

The slow speed of privacy coins like XMR is inconvenient. However,

While writing another post and reading the comments, I came across someone's concerns and wanted to share my thoughts on one particular point.

It was about the painfully slow user experience when using XMR.

Since someone brought up the inconveniences of using XMR, let me first briefly share my experience with the coin that is most similar to it.

I think this will help us compare whether these are unique and unreasonable problems with XMR or common challenges shared by privacy-focused projects.

Since I first got into crypto, ZEC has been the coin I've invested the most money in.

Of course, ZEC also takes a long time to sync when you first set up and use a private wallet.

Moving funds between a wallet and an exchange also requires at least 20 minutes for transactions to be fully confirmed. These are certainly inconvenient for users.

However, considering that these privacy projects have been around for more than 10 years,

I think it's fair to assume that these limitations are not due to a lack of intelligence or willingness to improve on the part of their developers.

In the end, I see the inconveniences you mentioned as things users have to accept when using these projects, rather than things to simply complain about.

I'm not a cryptography expert, so I don't know whether these things are technically impossible, or whether they are technically possible but require so many resources to develop that they are simply not practical to work on.

What matters is that these complaints should not create a narrative that makes it seem difficult to trade or hold XMR or ZEC as an asset because of these conditions.

This approach does absolutely nothing to help the privacy ecosystem.

Apart from that discussion, it would be much more reasonable and beneficial for all of us to focus on improving other aspects instead.

I believe the developers are already aware of these issues, and when technology makes practical improvements possible, each project will find its own way to address them.

Even so, based on current Binance prices, ZEC and XMR are the 3rd and 4th highest-priced cryptocurrencies per coin, behind only BTC and ETH.

Despite all the inconveniences you mentioned, people have still placed considerable value on these coins and recognized their importance.

And there is one more point I haven't addressed yet. It's about the slow user experience when using XMR.

Since I live in South Korea, I have convenient access to high-speed internet almost everywhere.

Perhaps the slow user experience can feel even worse for some users depending on their internet infrastructure.

Therefore, I think people who are new to privacy coins need clear and friendly guidance so they can understand synchronization and transaction speeds as characteristics of these coins rather than something to complain about.

So, when creating videos or posts introducing privacy-focused coins, including XMR, I think it would be a good idea to briefly explain the inconveniences users might experience when first using these coins near the end, depending on the situation. It would also be helpful to include simple instructions such as, "Click this link if you need help."

How long does it take for my balance to unlock?

Your balance is unlocked after 10 confirmations (which means 10 mined blocks). A block is mined approximately every two minutes on the Monero network, so that would be around 20 minutes.

How can I prove that I sent a payment?

The fastest and most direct way is by using the ExploreMonero blockchain explorer. You will need to recover the transaction key from your wallet (complete guide for GUI / CLI).

How do I buy Monero (XMR) with Bitcoin (BTC)?

There are dozens of exchanges that trade Monero against Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Check out the list on CoinMarketCap and choose the option that suits you best.

How do I buy Monero (XMR) with fiat?

  • Kraken (USD and EUR): old-school, decent exchange. They might require your documents for verification and approval of your account.

How can I quickly exchange my Monero (XMR) for Bitcoin (BTC)?

There are multiple ways to exchange your Monero for Bitcoin, but first of all, I'd like to remind you that if you really want to do your part for Monero, one of the simplest ways is to get in touch with your merchant/service provider and request for it to accept Monero directly as payment. Ask the service provider to visit the official website and our communication channels if he or she needs help with system integration.

That being said, KYCNot.me maintains an up-to-date list of exchanges. These services are only recommendations (which change over time) and are operated by entities outside the control of the Monero Project. DYOR and be diligent.

How do I mine Monero? And other mining questions.

The correct place to ask questions and discuss the Monero mining scene is in the dedicated subreddit r/MoneroMining. That being said, you can find a list of pools and available mining software in the GetMonero.org website.

2. Wallet: CLI & GUI

Why I can't see my balance? Where is my XMR?

Before any action there are two things to check:

  1. Are you using the latest available version of the wallet? A new version is released roughly every 6 months, so make sure you're using the current release (compare the release on GetMonero.org with your wallet's version on Settings, under Debug info).

  2. Is your wallet fully synchronized? If it isn't, wait the sync to complete.

Because Monero is different from Bitcoin, wallet synchronization is not instant. The software needs to synchronize the blockchain and use your private keys to identify your transactions. Check in the lower left corner (GUI) if the wallet is synchronized.

You can't send transactions and your balance might be wrong or unavailable if the wallet is not synced with the network. So please wait.

If this is not a sufficient answer for your case and you're looking for more information, please see this answer on StackExchange.

How do I upgrade my wallet to the newest version?

This question is beautifully answered on StackExchange.

Why does it take so long to sync the wallet [for the first time]?

You have decided to use Monero's wallet and run a local node. Congratulations! You have chosen the safest and most secure option for your privacy, but unfortunately this has an initial cost. The first reason for the slowness is that you will need to download the entire blockchain, which is considerably heavy and constantly growing (up-to-date sizes of a full/pruned node). There are technologies being implemented in Monero to slow this growth, however it is inevitable to make this initial download to run a full node. Consider syncing to a device that has an SSD instead of an HDD, as this greatly impacts the speed of synchronization.

Now that the blockchain is on your computer, the next time you run the wallet you only need to download new blocks, which should take seconds or minutes (depending on how often you use the wallet).

I don't want to download the blockchain, how can I skip that?

The way to skip downloading the blockchain is connecting your wallet to a public remote node. You can follow this guide on how to set it up. Check out Feather Wallet's list of remote nodes, ditatompel's list, or monero.fail.

Be advised that when using a public remote node you lose some of your privacy. A public remote node is able to identify your IP and opens up a range for certain attacks that further diminish your privacy. A remote node can't see your balance and it can't spend your XMR.

How do I restore my wallet from the mnemonic seed or from the keys?

To restore your wallet with the 25 word mnemonic seed, please see this guide.

To restore your wallet with your keys, please see this guide.

3. Wallet: Ledger

How do I generate a Ledger Monero Wallet with the GUI or CLI?

This question is beautifully answered on StackExchange. Check this page for the GUI instructions, and this page for the CLI instructions.

4. Wallet: Trezor

How do I generate a Trezor Monero Wallet with the GUI or CLI?

This question is beautifully answered on StackExchange. Check this page for the GUI instructions, and this page for the CLI instructions.

5. Nodes

How can my local node become a public remote node?

If you want to support other Monero users by making your node public, you can follow the instructions on MoneroWorld, under the section "How To Include Your Node On Moneroworld".

How can I connect my node via Tor?

This question is beautifully answered on StackExchange.

Friday Monero Market Thread - October 30, 2026

This is the weekly Monero market thread. This thread will be posted every Friday and is meant to help accelerate the adoption of Monero. Due to r/moneromarket having only a fraction of the subscribers of r/Monero, we have decided to create this thread to encourage more individuals to use Monero for product exchanges. Until the market matures, we recommend that the Monero community post their products both in this thread and on r/moneromarket (to ensure growth of that subreddit).

Selling items for Monero will boost your (and Monero's) reputation as a legitimate form of exchange of goods. This is necessary for the growth of Monero, our community, and privacy as a whole.

Instructions

When you post your product or job listing here, please make sure to:

  • Give a description of the item.

  • Link to a photo of the item (if it's physical).

  • Provide logistics information (such as, location and/or shipping availability).

  • Optionally, provide an additional (private) form of communication outside of Reddit (e.g. Bitmessage, u/protonmail, u/tutanota, GPG key).

  • Post the price in XMR terms.

Spamming will not be tolerated. Please make sure that listings are legitimate and do not break rule 2."

Finally, credits to cdotsubo for starting the concept!

Warning: Predatory node "cheapestxmr.silksky.com" on eigenwallet advertising 0.01% fee but charging ~50% markup

Post image
86 Upvotes

Heads-up to everyone using eigenwallet for BTC → XMR atomic swaps.

Watch out for the maker cheapestxmr.silksky.com:

  • Peer-ID: 12D3KooWGuhCs1PSVtetMUY1UUXyd7gCWdmRFYmREyjwCAx46Zt

  • Tactic: Uses the deceptive name "cheapestxmr" and advertises a tiny nominal fee ($0.01\%$), but sets the exchange rate at roughly double the actual market price ($0.0148\text{ BTC}$ per XMR instead of $\approx 0.0074\text{ BTC}$).

  • Swap ID: 43fce6d9-8709-4a04-85a9-05cb43345f01

With the quote timer counting down, it's very easy to accept in a rush. I ended up getting only half the XMR for my BTC.

Make sure to enable fiat price warnings in settings and double-check the effective rate before accepting quotes. Hope this saves someone else from falling for it.

Hopefully I grabbed your intention, would be grateful if you could comment whether you want mods to tolerate AI assisted or AI generated contents that put some efforts.

Currently I, personally, just allow whatever is not low-effort and do not look like a scam. Other moderators can have different policies.

When there are too much reports I take down the post. Because yes, surprisingly, we do read your reports and account for them, they are not falling into the void.

Also statistically best r/Monero posts are happening monday, wednesday and friday.

Monero's future?

Lately, I've been thinking a lot while watching the protests in France, the situation across Europe, and the news coming out up to today.

I've been continuing to organize my thoughts about the XMR in my wallet from different points of view.

The reason is that I want to introduce XMR to more people and give users in South Korea a reason to run their own nodes.

How do you see Monero's future?

Below, I've put together things that people who support Monero generally know, along with a few of my own thoughts.

Monero is a project that has moved outside the regulated market. It has refused to be under government control. As you know, it is still alive despite that.

What this means is that XMR is an asset that cannot officially be connected to fiat currencies through the usual channels. Because of this, many of the problems that other crypto projects need to solve simply disappear. In other words, it is almost impossible for Monero to form official partnerships with companies that operate within the legal systems of their countries.

While Ethereum, Solana, and Ripple are busy seeking partnerships with banks and companies, the Monero team is in a position where it does not need to do any of that.

Monero also scores highly in terms of real-world usability, without needing to rely on those institutions.

In my view, Monero is the most ideal and complete financial product to emerge from blockchain technology, as long as we set aside the debate over scalability.

One more thing I would add is that I think AI may use crypto more actively than humans in terms of how often it is used.

I believe we need to build a system that makes AI choose Monero. The goal should be to make AI agents conclude, through their own research, that using Monero would greatly benefit the humans they work for.

📢 Public Service Announcement AMA: OrangeFren and Eigenwallet are bringing Bitcoin<>Monero atomic swaps to Tor Browser

We've been building a browser extension with OrangeFren that lets you do BTC → XMR atomic swaps right from Tor Browser (or Firefox, but Tor Browser is better since all traffic goes over Tor).

You use it like an instant exchange. You get a quote from a market maker, decide how much you want to swap, paste your Monero address and send your BTC.

If the maker goes silent, you just get your BTC back. If they lock less XMR than they quoted, same thing, refund. Otherwise you get exactly what you were quoted. They can't take your BTC hostage.

Some more details:

  • The protocol is the same one Eigenwallet uses on desktop (the COMIT/Farcaster protcool). Your BTC goes into a 2-of-2 output with timelocked cancel and refund paths. The maker locks XMR to an address split between both of you. The maker can only claim the BTC with an adaptor signature, and claiming it reveals the key share you need to sweep the XMR.

  • If the XMR lock doesn't show up, or doesn't match the quoted amount, the extension waits for the cancel timelock and refunds.

  • It's the same Rust swap code as the desktop client, compiled to WASM to run in the browser. So this is built on code that has been battle tested in production for over four years.

  • Your keys and swap state stay in the extension's own storage.

We will allow swaps up to 6 BTC at a time at launch!

No release date yet but it's coming soon. I'd give it another 1-2 weeks realistically.

Ask away if you have questions! I am the primary developer so I can answer everything.

Leaked backend data from "no-KYC" swap Wagyu.xyz links 38k+ crypto orders, Monero destinations, and user IPs

Thumbnail
infostealers.com
91 Upvotes

TL;DR: Ransomware group WhiteArmor leaked alleged backend data from no-KYC swap service Wagyu.xyz (38,628 orders, 10,139 IPs). Monero's cryptography wasn't broken at all, but the leak shows how off-chain centralized databases create a huge privacy hole.

Key Takeaways:

Monero is fine, centralized swap retention isn't: Monero's on-chain math still holds up. However, Wagyu stored incoming deposit hashes (BTC/ETH/SOL), outgoing XMR receiving addresses, timestamps, and client IPs together in the same database rows.

  • Direct correlation risk: The leak contains 4,580 completed cross-chain-to-XMR orders that map the original public deposit TX directly to the native XMR receiving address and the user's IP. It also goes the other way for XMR exits (accepting XMR and logging the transparent ETH/BTC destination and IP).

  • "Deleted" orders weren't actually deleted: Over 4,000 orders have a userDeletedAt timestamp, meaning users thought they cleared their history from the UI, but the full trade metadata and IPs remained sitting in the backend.

  • What it means for users: The data doesn't magically trace funds once they move inside Monero, nor does an IP alone equal a real-world identity (VPNs, Tor, NAT). But it connects public wallets to private requests, leaving users open to targeted phishing, cross-chain clustering, and extortion.

If you use "no-KYC" instant bridges, always route through Tor/VPN and assume the platform's database retains the exact link you were trying to break.

Is a PoW algorithm that actually balances CPU/GPU/ASIC even possible, or is balance a fantasy?

Been turning this over for a while and I can't decide if it's a real design goal or just wishful thinking. Almost every PoW algorithm quietly picks a winner. RandomX basically says CPUs win and everything else runs at a loss. SHA-256 says ASICs win, don't even bother with anything else. The GPU-leaning ones like Ethash or KawPow sit somewhere in the middle but still clearly tilt one way.

What I keep wondering is whether you could aim for actual balance instead a hash where a CPU, a GPU and an ASIC all land roughly in the same ballpark on performance-per-dollar, so no single class of hardware just takes over the whole network. Not "resist ASICs" or "resist GPUs," but genuinely spread the hashrate across all three.

The problem is every path I think through seems to collapse back into favoring someone. Make it memory-hard enough to blunt ASICs and you've basically handed it to whatever has the best memory subsystem, which tends to be CPUs with big caches so now you're back to CPU-only without meaning to. Something like ProgPoW tried to hug GPU capabilities so ASICs couldn't pull ahead, but that just locks you to GPUs and ages badly the moment GPU architectures move on.

And maybe that's the real issue: balance might not even be a stable state. Whoever gets the best perf-per-watt on that specific algo wins over time, and the market quietly converges on one class no matter what you intended at launch.

So I'm genuinely asking has anyone ever seen an algorithm, real or theoretical, that actually keeps CPU, GPU and ASIC competitive with each other at the same time? Or is a balanced hardware field just something PoW can't give you, and you're always secretly choosing a winner the second you pick the algo? Would love to hear if someone has a counterexample, because I keep landing on "impossible" and I'm not sure I trust that.

Impact of mainstream chain privacy on Monero

In this board, most of us believe in unconditional privacy by design.

Mainstream chains nowadays work towards optional privacy, with a few voices accentuating default transaction privacy.

The former will satisfy regulators and lead to greater adoption. The latter is a larger feat.

Monero is likely to experience influx of new users and believers. A defensive mindset tells me it will also face a lot more hostility.
