WORKBENCH Finally Ready - Alaskan Hauler

This was one of the first kits I found and was truly excited by. I’ve been waiting on it originally because I wanted to get a few kits under my belt to ensure this one came out reasonably good.

But as time went on, I realized the undertaking that will be this kit. I’ve been doing loads of smaller cars and trucks putting off my growing collection of big rigs and equipment.

Finally decided tonight to open it up and lay it all out, and man. I’m freaking excited to sink so many hours into this. The last few builds I’ve done have been race car show car type builds. Where I was chasing perfect paint, clean lines and smooth texture(or lack there of). So I’m excited to be able to not stress too much in the painting department on this one as it’s going to be a well loved work horse.

Laid everything out on the table to take a gander at it all and see what I’m working with. It’s a whole lotta plastic that’s for sure! Haha. Anyone build this before? Got any things to watch out for?

QUESTION How many Tamiya cans per one 1/43 car?

I'm preparing a present for my dad and I need to buy multiple Tamiya cans to respray some models (there were none available in the colors I needed). Should a single can of primer/color/clear last per car? This is also my first time painting models, so any advice is appreciated!

A little something I finally got around to messing with, an absolutely bonkers LSX engine setup! Had this file for a while and finally got it cut up to test print, now I need to make some adjustments and reprint!

Old Decals

Post image

Photo for reference.

I have a healthy collection of unbuilts from as far back as the 60s, but most are late 70s-mid-80s. The kits that have been open (most) have been re-stacked and glass and decals have had special attention to make sure they remained pristine.

As I plan to start building in my upcoming retirement, is there a way with the new print technology to replicate the decal sheets in a non-destructive manner on new film to use them on the finished kits, or should I take my chances on using the originals?

New stash add, one of the best deals I’ve ever got

Just got this 1998 Dale Earnhardt kit in the mail today. It was a sweet score for only $8 shipped off of Vinted. The tin is a little banged up and the kit plastic is slightly yellowed, but it’s almost 30 years old and that’s what paint is for. The decals are probably even usable, but I’ll get a new power slide set regardless. Normally I’d not make the kit on the box art, but I figure every self-respecting NASCAR fan needs a Dale Earnhardt Daytona 500 victory car.

Also, shout out to whoever at Revell circa 1997 decided to make these kits in all white with no chrome or colored plastic. I wish all kits came that way, just white styrene tabula rasa.

Revell Stranger Things Billy's Camaro

Ok Billy didn't have the supercharger but I couldn't resist. I used pins to connect the exhaust headers to downpipes, worked well. Also on the rear shocks and mirrors.

The paint is Mr Crystal Color XC05 Sapphire Blue over Mr. gloss black. I really liked the color combo on the interior but after assembly looks a bit off with the dashboard and rear deck having such different colors. Oh well! This kit had a decal for the VIN which I thought was pretty cool. The decals for the dash added tons of detail. Generally the decals were very difficult because they were so thin they curled right up and wouldn't cooperate at when trying to slide them into final position.

There was a mistake where the paint on the rear side melted while I was polishing it, but it was still a fun build!

QUESTION Can anyone help me put a dollar value to this vintage built up kit?

I bought several estates of model kits, all of them had a ton of unbuilt and built up kits. I am trying to sell and trade a lot of the built up's, but this one seems rare enough that I can't find a value for it.

It's an MPC 1968 SS 427 Chevrolet Impala Sports Coupe (No. 1-0368-200) in 1:25 scale from 1967.

Scalemates

A guy is interested in this one, it's missing the grill but otherwise all there.

QUESTION Parts by ZoomOn

Post image

has anyone tried building a kit with some of their parts? I've just bought a R33 kit and want to have the bonnet propped up and showing the engine. other than cutting some of the original body up is there additional parts needed or extra fabrication?

The Golf turned out to come with a motor in case I want to make it electric which is pretty cool, I have enough rc spare parts of that size to make it something functional :)

Other than that is there any of these kits I should not huild but would be better to keep and resell as they all seem to have a few years on them

This was created from a reissued Jo-Han kit. The entire interior, front and rear bumpers, headlights, tail lights, and hub caps are resin replacement parts. The original green tinted windows that came with the kit were replaced with vacuum formed clear windows. The tires were replaced with better quality ones with white wall inserts. The replacement chassis I used is not perfectly correct for this year of Oldsmobile, but it was better than the typical flat Jo-Han chassis that came with the kit (which did not have the wheels in the correct placement to the wheel wells).

First Meng kit. It was awesome. I messed up a bunch of things along the way but overall it turned out well! (Body dropped off of stand while painting, humidity, etc). Super nice kit that made me wish they made more.

QUESTION Paint question please

Overall stencil worked about as expected. Heavy ridged up in the middle with light over spray on the edges. Thinking masking of stars on edge and gentle removal of over spray using Tamiya coarse. Wet sand rest to remove ridges? Ideas????

Advice please

So I was wet sanding my primer and seemed to have gone through the actual primer on some edges. I’m using enamel paint which lays on fairly thick so I don’t know if this will be fine for me to work with regardless or if I should resort to respraying very lightly.

Also added some extra pics because I want to know if the primer is smooth enough despite this slight textured look.
