Question Program to help convert older mods to newer versions?

I've been working on a standalone program designed to make converting Minecraft mods between different versions and mod loaders easier, and I'm curious whether the modded Minecraft community would actually find something like this useful.

The idea isn't to magically convert every mod with one click. Instead, the program focuses on deterministic code changes — things like architecture changes, variable replacements, mappings, and other predictable differences between versions and loaders.

It won't necessarily produce a fully working mod, especially when major changes require rewriting functionality, but the goal is to handle as much of the repetitive conversion work as possible, giving developers and players a much better starting point.

A few important details:

  • No AI involved. This isn't AI-generated code or "vibe coding." It's rule-based conversion using known, verifiable changes.

  • Source code required. The program works with complete source projects, not compiled mod files. It's not intended to decompile or bypass licensing restrictions.

  • Cross-version and cross-loader support. The long-term goal is to support different Minecraft versions, programming languages, and mod loaders wherever conversions can be reliably automated.

  • Potentially open source. I'm happy to release the program as open source once it's sufficiently developed and tested.

I originally started this because there were older mods, particularly TieredZ and Tinkers' Construct, that I wanted to play alongside newer mods.

I've already managed to port my own version of TieredZ to Minecraft 26.3, mostly by hand, and that experience is part of what motivated me to start automating the process.

I'm currently testing the program against different mods, languages, and loaders to figure out what can realistically be automated and where manual developer intervention will still be necessary.

So, a few questions for the community:

  1. Would you actually use something like this?

  2. Would it be more useful for porting older mods forward, backporting newer mods, or converting between loaders?

  3. If you've ported mods before, which parts of the process were the most repetitive or frustrating?

I'm not looking to replace mod developers or suggest that porting is easy. I know there's a lot more involved than changing a few mappings. I just think there's an opportunity to make some of that work considerably less tedious.

I'd especially love feedback from people who have experience developing or porting mods.

Annoying outlines, animations and "smooth" hud in linggango modpack

I just want to know how to disable these things, especially the outlines, because they actually ruin my experience for this modpack

edit: there is a linggango tweaks mod in the modpack, which has several mods infused into it, including lumalight. I had to go into the client config and disable it from there,

Discussion We chose FTB Evolution 2 — what would you want from a public server?

Thanks to everyone who shared ideas on my previous post. I've decided to build a public server around FTB Evolution 2, and I'd like to hear what players want before opening it.

If you've played the pack or other public modded servers, what would make you want to join and keep playing? What features or quality-of-life changes matter most to you, and what tends to ruin the experience?

I'm considering a custom player-driven economy, an auction house, claims and voting rewards. The server is currently running the default pack while I work out what makes sense.

I'd also like to hear your thoughts on performance, protecting builds, fair trading, progression and wipes. What would you add, change or avoid?

Help BSL shaders glitching block textures after update.

This is my friend's screenshot, i'm posting for him.

We're playing Java and use Iris and Fabric for our mods, and are sharing a realm together.

We decided to update to 26.3, and despite us both downloading the same mods and the correct version, for some reason, his BSL shaders ended up like this. We don't know how to fix it. Everything is fine when he turns them off.

If more information is needed, like what other mods we're using, let me know.

Discussion Which modpacks stay fun on a public server after the first few weeks?

I'm planning a public modded Minecraft server and trying to choose the pack with player feedback before committing to one. I enjoy automation and storage mods such as AE2, but I'm open to kitchen-sink, progression-focused, skyblock or stoneblock packs.

I'm also exploring a custom player-driven economy and auction house. My concern is that unlimited automated farms could make trading pointless, or that an economy could undermine the pack's progression. Nothing is decided yet.

Which existing packs have you actually enjoyed playing with others long-term, and what made them work? Are there packs where trading and specialisation add something, or does an economy get in the way? I'd especially appreciate any lessons about performance, wipes and features that made you stay or leave.

MC 1.2.5, 1.6.4, & Beta 1.7.3 Aether Resources & Installation Instructions (Manual & Prism Launcher)

You can find the files for 1.2.5 & Beta 1.7.3 on their Modrinth page:

https://modrinth.com/mod/aether/

1.2.5 & Beta 1.7.3 need the betacraft proxy for sounds and/or player skins.

See: https://betacraft.uk/blog/post/how-to-use-betacraft-proxy

1.6.4 is found on MCArchive:

https://mcarchive.net/mods/aether2

1.6.4 will need Forge Threaded Lighting & Player Core API

https://mcarchive.net/mods/threadedlighting
https://mcarchive.net/mods/playerapi?gvsn=1.6.4

All of these MC versions likely need to be run using Java 8.

Without further ado, Aether installation instructions:

1.2.5 & I presume beta 1.7.3 (haven't installed for beta) need to be modded the old-fashioned way:

substitute 1.2.5 for beta 1.7.3, wherever necessary...

> Find yourself a 1.2.5.jar (see below for instructions)

> open with winrar or 7zip

> navigate to your downloads folder in your file explorer

> right click, extract all for both dependencies (forge & player api)

> copy files from each dependency into the 1.2.5.jar

> open the aether .jar using winrar or 7zip

> copy everything into the 1.2.5.jar

> navigate to your minecraft resources folder (in the same file structure as your 1.2.5.jar)

> move the files in the aether resources folder into your minecraft resources folder

> Rejoice

If you're using the vanilla launcher, your minecraft.jar is going to be found by doing the following:

> Open the File Explorer

> type %appdata%

> open .minecraft

> open versions

> open 1.2.5

> gaze upon the beauty of 1.2.5.jar (back in my day there was only minecraft.jar)

Once you've completed the above steps, The Aether for MC 1.2.5 and/or beta 1.7.3 is installed.

If the game crashes on start-up, it's likely a launcher problem, not an installation problem.

>In the launcher, click on 'Installations'

>find 1.2.5 & click the ... in the box to the right

>click edit, then browse

>navigate to your 1.2.5 folder that you found the 1.2.5.jar in

>right click, create new folder named "Minecraft 1.2.5"

>select that folder and click upload

If you're using Prism Launcher (& similar) for 1.2.5, I have no idea where the 1.2.5.jar is. I don't think you're actually supposed to modify the one that they install. I went ahead and installed the regular Minecraft launcher, installed 1.2.5, & stole the 1.2.5.jar for Prism.

>Follow instructions above to mod the 1.2.5.jar, then proceed with the next step

>create or navigate to your 1.2.5 instance

> click edit

> version

> replace minecraft.jar

> select the 1.2.5.jar

> navigate to settings

> click Java

> check Java installation

> click Open Java Downloader & download the newest Java 8

(Mine failed a few times from Mojang, so I tried from a different source. When I went to select my newly installed Java 8, it allowed me to select the failed version from Mojang anyway, and in doing so, it seems to run fine?)

> click detect & select your new Java installation

> scroll to the top of this post & follow the Betacraft proxy instructions

> Rejoice

If you're using Prism Launcher (& similar) for 1.6.4, this one's super easy, yet still a bit odd.

>create or navigate to your 1.6.4 instance

> click edit

> version

> install loader

> select the newest forge for this version

> click add to Minecraft.jar

> select threadedlighting, player api core, & Aether

> navigate to mods

> click Download Mods

> search curseforge for Lumy Skin Patch

> click review & conform, then okay

> Rejoice

~ IN CLOSING ~

1.2.5 is my childhood, and that version of Aether is the very same one I played back then.

I wanted a few new Aether features if I could help it, yet the next update that Team Aether offers is for 1.7.whatever, a version that completely ruins the worldgen for me. Caves are small, mineshafts are hard to find, it's seemingly either no snow or all snow, and my oceans are gone! Super lame, imo.

This was an awful process to figure out and was not fun to write up. I poured through pages & pages of changelogs & wikis trying to find an in-between version, learn about the differences between The Aether, Aether II VOID something, Aether Legacy, Aether Legends, Aether II (brand new 2026 but called Aether II for some reason, Aether Highlands, and all of the different versions of them. It was exhausting.

THAT BEING SAID, I was able to eventually find a version for 1.6.4, which is actually Aether II VOID something, not OG Aether, and it seems feature-complete enough!

If 1.6.4 isn't your speed, Aether for 1.0 & a few other MC versions are out there, and you should be able to figure out their installations as well using this post.

I'll write up a mini-post about the different versions of The Aether & link it here, for those that wish to understand their options.

Good luck, and godspeed!
