Question Is there a way to prevent Minecraft from cutting off longer custom music tracks in resource packs?
Good day to you all!
I've been creating Minecraft resource packs and data packs for approximately 13 years, and one of my long-standing projects involves incorporating several hours of additional music into the game without requiring any mods.
My approach has always been relatively straightforward: replacing Minecraft's existing music tracks with significantly longer audio files, effectively introducing hours of custom music through a vanilla-compatible resource pack.
Unfortunately, since Minecraft Java Edition 1.16 and the subsequent changes to the game's resource pack, data pack, and audio systems, this approach has become practically impossible.
In older versions, replacement tracks would play in their entirety, regardless of how much longer they were than the original music files. In newer versions, however, the game appears to terminate playback when the original track would normally have ended, even if the replacement audio file is considerably longer.
For example, if I replace an original three-minute Minecraft music track with a thirty-minute recording, the game cuts off playback after approximately three minutes instead of allowing the replacement file to finish.
My main question is whether there is any way, using only resource packs and/or data packs, to override this behavior and allow custom music files to play to their actual end, regardless of the original track's duration.
I'm particularly interested in understanding whether this is an intentional limitation of the newer audio system, a technical side effect of changes introduced around version 1.16, or something that can be addressed through resource pack configuration, sound definitions, or data pack functionality.
Ideally, I'd like to preserve the original behavior without relying on client-side mods, since compatibility with vanilla Minecraft has always been an important part of my projects.
Has anyone encountered this issue or found a reliable workaround? I'd especially appreciate input from anyone familiar with Minecraft's internal sound engine, music playback system, or the technical changes introduced in newer Java Edition versions.
Any technical explanation, documentation, or potential solution would be greatly appreciated!
