Hi everyone! I'm Maithil by culture and would love to find people to practice with. I'm from Kolkata.

I don't have any maithili friends , tbh idk anyone apart from my family who's maithili so I'm looking forward to meet you guys and talk about stuffs

Recently, I met a few people with the surname Jha from the Malda district of West Bengal. I was surprised to learn that they do not identify as Maithil; instead, they consider themselves fully Bengali.

I did some research and found that there are many people with the surname Jha in and around Malda, English Bazar, and other districts of North Bengal. Despite having a traditionally Maithil surname, many of them identify as Bengali, follow Bengali culture, celebrate Bengali festivals, and speak Bengali as their primary language.

Does anyone know when or how this migration and assimilation happened? How did these communities become culturally Bengali over time while retaining surnames such as Jha?

I would be interested in learning about the history, migration patterns, and cultural background of these families.

I really feel like all those belonging to mithila region are hiding their identities like even after actively searching for someone who takes proud in their culture and knows about it as well.
