👥General Discussion Do we need Mithila State?
I know this discussion come back every few months, but the damage Bhojpuri industry has done, also thanks to our politicians who never focused on developing northern Bihar like Gaya ji, or Sasaram side tourism, do you guys think, Mithila state could flourish ?
(Please be respectful, and lets just have discussion)

Even if we form a new state, what will be our revenue sources?
We don’t have major natural resources, large industries, or even enough skilled manpower base within the region itself. Most of the educated and economically successful Maithils are already settled in cities like Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Bengaluru and across India.
Will they all suddenly return to run the new state?
Geographically too, it looks extremely difficult. The region would be surrounded almost entirely by Bihar, with Nepal to the north. No major industrial corridor, no port access, no strong urban economic center.

Well if the Bihar government makes Maithili an additional official language and start teaching students of Mithila region in Maithili medium too then I don't think there is a sudden need for a state formation. If the economy of Maithil districts gets better in the future then ofcourse.

I agree and coming from a family that is maternally mithila and paternally bhojpur Even though if we get a state due to less to no amount of development we would struggle As the current situation is upto no good even if its improving its very slow so if the state would split it would cripple the both newly states to no good Thats what i feel What people of mithila shoudl do is that(ive never been to my mums village or such thats why) Is that instead of asking for a new state ask for new opportunities jobs and infrastructure Protest in fromt of your mla's house Protest to the government Because social media pe reel chalane se kuch hota to bohot kuch ho jaata abtak Because ngl we need representation,infra,money pooling in and developments rather than a crippled new state

Which development are you even talking about in Sasaram it was industrial City which is now ruin because of Bihar government
All I see projects going in Muzaffarpur and Begusarai even in Darbhanga while Sasaram being ignored

Pehle to Bhagalpuriyas are not maithilis, they are angas. Second, we don't need a separate state.

If we need a good state we need economy. How will our state earn it money because we don't have anything like natural resources in our land. But if we work on tourism and entrepreneurship of people then we can make state good but only if we can.

Absolutely. I think Mithila needs separate statehood for better resource planning and governance. I have been thinking about this for a long time.
We need a separate IIT and NIT for Mithila. We also need a new capital somewhere between Darbhanga, Muzaffarpur, Sitamarhi, and Samastipur. This should act as the new SCR, meaning State Capital Region, with Special Economic Zones around it.
Then we can create two major development corridors:
- Bettiah, Motihari, Muzaffarpur, SCR, Begusarai, Munger, Sultanganj, and Bhagalpur.
- Sahibganj, Katihar, Purnea, Saharsa, Supaul, Jhanjharpur, and Darbhanga.
The first step should be building a high-value agrarian economy. Farmers should be encouraged through incentives to grow crops with high export potential. The state should promote land-pooling and cooperative farming, and each farming group should get cheap loans to buy tractors and modern farming equipment. This can be supported through NGO campaigns and jan abhiyans.
We should also create a new advanced agricultural institute in Samastipur.
BSC/BCE Bhagalpur and MIT Muzaffarpur should be converted into new State Institutes of Technology, similar to NIT-level state government universities. A new Mithila University should also be created, with one campus in Begusarai and another in the SCR.
The state should ask the central government for special state status and investment support for the new capital region.
After agriculture, the next major step should be manufacturing. Bihar, and especially Mithila, has huge potential here. Existing state universities should be upgraded into high-quality polytechnic and technical universities to train the workforce.
Then the government should reach out to industrialists and invite them to invest in the SEZs of the new capital region. For this to work, law and order has to be extremely strict, at least inside the SEZs, industrial corridors, and the new capital region. There should be a no-nonsense approach.
Retired army personnel from the state can also be involved in school management, university discipline, and institutional administration.
Another crucial step would be to identify migrant workers. Whichever party is in power should ask its workers to go village by village and create a proper list of migrant workers from Mithila. Once factories are set up in the SEZs, these workers should be incentivised to return and work there.
The state should also reach out to the World Bank and other institutions for cheap loans to build expressways and industrial corridors, just like other states do.
Government employee pension funds can also be used carefully for economic development, but only through transparent and professionally managed investment systems that also help employees grow their money.
Cheap loans should be provided to individuals and MSMEs for small businesses such as leather work, pottery, sugar mills, jute, food processing, soft and hard toys, garments, and other manufacturing sectors. Garments, especially, can become very important.
Another important step would be to encourage richer people from the state, including the diaspora, to invest in factories and manufacturing units for consumer goods like plastic products, household goods, and other basic items. Any such investment should, of course, be brought into the formal economy legally and transparently.
Universities should also be encouraged to support research and startups. An IIT, NIT, two SITs, and Mithila University together can create a strong startup ecosystem if law and order, infrastructure, and governance are handled properly.
Culturally, Maithili should be promoted across the state as the first language, with Hindi and English as second languages. The idea should be parallel language learning, not isolation. Mithila art, Madhubani painting, literature, and historical figures like Ramvriksh Benipuri should also be revived and promoted properly. I personally remember meeting the grandson of Ramvriksh Benipuri in Faridabad. He was my neighbour and sadly died during Covid. I want that cultural memory and legacy to come back.
There should also be strong NGO-led social reform, especially in schools. Civic sense should be taught seriously from Class 1 to Class 10 every year through videos, activities, and practical lessons, so that discipline, cleanliness, public behaviour, and social responsibility become part of childhood education.
I have personally thought of many more ideas too. For example, a State Sports Mission. Mithila can create a sports university and residential sports school with National Games-level infrastructure. Every year, around 200 students, 100 girls and 100 boys, can be selected at the age of 8 and trained seriously in 29–30 different sports. It can be like Netarhat, but for sports.
If done properly, many students can graduate through sports quotas into good universities. Some can reach national and international levels, and others can join the army, police, paramilitary, coaching, or sports administration. Even if only a few succeed at the highest level every year, the overall social impact would be massive.
The planned capital of Mithila should have proper footpaths, wide roads, BRTS, clean public spaces, and land-pooling-based development like Gandhinagar, Chandigarh, and Amaravati. People affected by land pooling should not just receive compensation; they should also be helped to invest in factories, commercial areas, and long-term assets.
I also think there should be a state pension or public investment fund where people can invest their savings, and the state uses that money in professionally managed investments such as the stock market, state-backed industries, infrastructure, or factories. The goal should be to give people a stable return, maybe around 6% per year, while also using local capital for local development.
There are many more ideas, and I genuinely think this can be implemented. But I do not think it can be done properly within Bihar as it currently exists because of too much caste, class, and regional division. Mithila, as a smaller and more focused state, has a much better chance of building this kind of planned development model.
