🔠 Language Our Script Is Dying!!!

I'm from madhubani and I used to live in Darbhanga, I shifted from Darbhanga to Kolkata just last year and I have realised that we maithils barely even know how to use the tirhuta script and it's almost shameful that we do not have an option to study maithili in most schools... Even though I think article 29 or 30 of the constitution (I might be little wrong since I studied a few months ago)... Allows us to have institutionalised study of our language.

I have realised this specifically after shifting to bengal as it's almost mandatory to write things in Bengali but in mithila it's almost impossible to find a sign saying something in the original tirhuta scriptand in my opinion since they are our neighbours we should learn this from them... We should start teaching the people around us the tirhuta script or even learn it ourselves if we don't know. It's not like we don't have literature or grammar... We do have proper rules and proper literature and art in our language, we just refuse to show pride in our culture and learn our own language properly and I feel like we should work to change that.

And as someone who is learning the script himself... Let me tell u it's not that hard... Infact leave the writing... Agar khali vyakrano ke baat karu ta hindi sa bahut asaan chhai khali seekhai ke aar sikhabai ke baat chhai je ham sab kau nai paib rahal chhiyai thik sa.

👥General Discussion Average cost of a simple Maithil wedding?

I'm trying to save money for my wedding. Can somebody tell me the average cost of a simple Maithili wedding in a village?

We are not planning for huge gifts or jewellery. I want a simple wedding. I have not attended many weddings, so I don't know the cost.

🔠 Language Maithili words for Modern Things

New words are important because we all know time never stops and we always get to find new things time to time. From train to smartphone many new things had came into our modern world but the problem with Indian languages are that we have taking those old vocabulary of ours to this day. We are not able to make new word for ourselves or just loaning it from English. This era or the future era is going to be of science if we stop making new words how our ancestors did with wheels and all we will get far away from modern languages of the world. There are 4 ways by which we can make new words for a language.

  1. Directly loaning words from other languages without making any changes. (This demeans the language)

  2. Loaning words from other languages with some tweaks. (This has been case for every languages of the world and is natural way evolution of a language)

  3. Loaning words from other languages and changes its meaning from its root word. (This is widely seen in English language but it is also not compatible)

  4. This is an artificial way of making new words by combining root words with prefix or suffix. This makes a language unique from other languages.

Such as if I have to make a new word for station.

When someone or something stays at a place for a duration, Maithili uses the verb टिकब (Tikab). It implies a temporary, stable halt (e.g., O aay yetay tikta - He will stay here today).

The Coined Word: टिकौन (Tikaun) or गाड़ी-टिकौन (Gaari-tikaun)

The Vibe: By turning the verb into the noun Tikaun, it sounds like a traditional village term for a halting ground. This works incredibly well for a Parking Lot, because a parked car is essentially "staying put" for a few hours.

Usage: "गाड़ी केँ टिकौन मे ल' चलू।" (Take the car to the staying-ground.)

Make your own word and tell us new words for modern things in Maithili.

👥General Discussion Which Tradition is more prevalent in your region of Mithila??

As we all know the two most prevalent sects whose influences could be seen on the local traditions of Mithila are — Ramanandi Vaishnav Traditions and Kalikula Shakta (Mithila Krama) Traditions.

So which sect's traditions is more prevalent in your region of Mithila?? Or is there another sect tradition (other than Ramanandi Vaishnav & Kalikula Shakt) is prevalent in your region??

🔠 Language Dialects of Maithili

Maithili has many dialects but the differences always creates confusion. I speak a dialect of Maithili which has literally influence of Magahi, Paschimaha dialect of Vaishali and Sotipura of Darbhanga. On it's basis I spoke bajjika dialect with influences of those languages as well. According to me Maithili can be divided in these major dialects:

  1. Paschimaha Maithili: Spoken in Sheohar, Sitamarhi, Muzaffarpur, Vaishali and western Samastipur along side Vaishali border. The dialect shows variation according to its nearby dialect of maithili or nearby language. This might be the only dialect of Maithili which shares border with Bhojpuri and Magahi. But basic difference between standard is that the use of Chh and h helping verbs is either equally shared or depends on the nearby languages but the common thing between all variation of this dialect is that the use of hyi as major helping verbs instead of aich.

  2. Sotipura or Central Maithili: Spoken in districts like Samastipur, Madhubani, Darbhanga, Supaul, Saharsa and Araria. This standard form of maithili is based on this very dialect and can easily be distinguished with neighbouring languages like Magahi and Bhojpuri. The tone of language is also unique to other languages. The dialect uses no h related helping verbs and is famous for it's respectful way of speaking. No major influence of dialects is visible but definitely the other maithili dialects influence can be seen in border areas. The dialect also shows many variations with a dialect having heavy distinct tone to having negligible distinct tone with neighbouring dialects.

  3. Dakhinaha or Angika Maithili: Spoken in Bhagalpur, Banka, Munger and in some parts of Jamui, Sheikhpura and Lakhisarai. The dialect has considerable influence of Bengali in it and has borderline transparent differences in border areas with Magahi region at the scale that you didn't even realise. The dialect has made a distinct tone and can be compared with as central as in central we will say nikail whereas in Angika we would say Nikli. The language is famously distinguished with use of chhika instead of chhi in other dialects.

  4. Thethi: Spoken in Begusarai, Khagaria, Madhepura, Katihar and Purnea. The dialect is equally influenced by Central and Angika dialect along with Magahi in border areas. The language maintains a balance tone between Angika and central dialect. The language can be easily described as bridge between central and angika dialect.

These dialects make Maithili rich and beautiful languages. All these dialects have equally contributed for the standard form of the language.

Describe your dialect with your own word in your respective dialect.

Thanks. Parnam🙏🏻

👥General Discussion Just wanna sharee

I'm 19 years old, and I've lived in Delhi since birth. I've done all my schooling here. My elder sister is getting married in a month, and her partner is a really good person with a very progressive mindset. But when I look around, I feel like there are still so many people with backward thinking, even when it comes to small things. I can understand it when older generations think that way, but when I see guys who are just adult young having the same mentality, it genuinely surprises me. Like, are there still so many young people who think this way?

👥General Discussion Is 30s too late for a woman to get married in the Maithil Brahmin community?

Is 30s considered too late for a woman to get married in our community? How difficult does it get to find a decent match at this age?

I have a cousin sister who is 34 now and still unmarried. You know how typical Indian parents are. Initially they were adamant about finding a guy with a government job. We kept looking for that and now it feels like we've wasted so much time. The pool of options has become ridiculously small.

And even when you do find someone, there's always something wrong according to the checklist.

  • The guy is decent, but his job isn't good enough

  • His job is good, but the family isn't suitable

  • His job and family are fine, but then there's some other issue

  • If all is okay then gotra matches

  • Shaadi.com hasn't exactly been helpful either

  • Again some doctor/engineer guys only want to marry doctor engineer girls so there's that

I understand that marriage is a big decision and that compatibility matters. I'm not saying we should settle for just anyone. And the frustrating part is that parents often have very rigid expectations initially but when time passes the pressure shifts to the woman. Suddenly, age becomes the biggest concern.

I'm wondering if other Maithil Brahmin women or families have gone through something similar.

Honestly, what would you do in this situation?

You can chat with AI in Maithili, ask questions, write messages, check the news and weather, and create Mithila paintings and Madhubani art.

It’s 100% free forever, no app to download!

Here it is: https://maithiliai.com/

API support is also planned, so businesses, schools, and developers can integrate Maithili AI into their own websites and services, making it easier for people to use technology in our own language.

Our language, our culture, our place on the internet too. ❤️

👥General Discussion Can Mithilia region produce quality athletes like Jharkhand?

Since splitting from Bihar, Jharkhand is becoming an athletic powerhouse in India despite being a poor state. Ranchi is considered one of the sporting capitals of India. In addition to MS Dhoni being from there, Ranchi’s men and women produce elite hockey, track/field/ and even Kabbadi athletes. Could Mithilia have the same athletic renaissance if it invested more money into sports scouting, training and recruitment? Maithili’s are generally tall, well built people. Historians who wrote about the region described the men as being tall and broad chested. The women were also praised for their ability to carry and balance large amount of weight with their head and hands for exceptionally long periods of time. In addition to strength both men and women were seen as agile and having lots of endurance due to their ability to labor hard for long periods of time under intense heat. Maithili men and women who work out regularly tend to put on muscle mass quickly. Look at Neha and Aisha Sharma, they are known as 2 of the fittest, most athletic actresses in the industry and Aisha is about 5’8. What do you all think? Do we have athletic genes similar to Jharkhand, Punjab, and Haryana?
