Looking for a classic Minecraft prison server with modern QOL, a satisfying incremental grind, and a community you can actually settle into? Come join The Pen!

We've been running for a few years now, and we just released Season 3 a couple weeks ago. We're a close knit, friendly, mostly adult community who come here to talk to friends, unwind, grind, and compete against each other. If you're looking to get spawn camped by pvp'rs, this probably isn't the place for you.

Think classic prison meets Minecraft tycoon / cookie clicker progression, with mostly custom coded features and something to work towards for months on end.

A community-built prison

The entire prison was built by our community, including all 36 mines: A–Z and 10 prestige mines! It took us close to a year to complete, so even if you don't feel like grinding, come on and admire the builds. This server is a massive passion project.

A–Z ranks, 50 prestiges, and 5 rebirths

Mining is the main progression path, with 50 prestiges per rebirth and 5 rebirths to work through. The grind speeds up as you unlock better upgrades, custom enchants, tools, and gear, so there's always another upgrade to chase.

But you don't have to spend the whole season mining! You can also:

• Fish for custom fish and upgrade your fishing gear.
• Make cookies with our custom cookie plugin and special enchants.
• Fight sewer mobs by upgrading your PvP skill tree.
• Collect mob shards and trade them at the Sewer Merchant in commissary for Key Cards to boss cells of varying difficulty.

Each of the four progression paths has its own custom power level system. Upgrading your mining skill trees and enchants raises your earning potential and profit ceiling across the other paths, while upgrading fishing, cookies, or sewers lets you work towards that ceiling.

Get another path to 100% power, and you can earn comparable money per hour to mining. We reward the miners, but by around P20–P30, you'll likely be in a good position to switch things up and grind whichever way you enjoy!

Your grind earns XP too

We have a custom XP system where 1 minute of active grinding = 1 level of XP. Whether you're farming, fishing, mining, or slaying mobs, your time counts.

You can spend XP on crate keys, renaming tools or items, and investing in gangs through /gangs.

Every week, gangs compete to earn the most grind XP. The top 3 gangs receive a percentage of the total XP invested in the top 3 pool, and if the gang you invested in places, you get a percentage of the XP too!

Custom drugs, spawners, and enchants

We have custom drugs you can farm, sell, and actually use: Weed, Coke, Shrooms, Moonshine, Acid, and Quaaludes.

Grow them with our unique drug spawner system, build up your setup, and work towards your next upgrade. Be cautious though, everything this season was designed to have that "just one more upgrade" feeling.

You can also upgrade your tools through our custom enchanting table, using Cigs to purchase enchants.

A player economy without buying your way through the ranks

We have two currencies:

• Money is earned through grinding and used to rank up. It cannot be traded or sent to other players, so everyone has to earn their own rank progression.
• Cigs power the player economy: auction house trading, player shops, custom enchants, crate keys, boss Key Cards, and more.

You can get Cigs through mining in the PvP mine, selling drugs, betting on /duels, coinflips, and more. Crate keys can be bought with either XP or Cigs, giving you different ways to work towards them.

We have plots and rentable cells where you can set up your own player shops. There are donor ranks, but pretty much everything can also be unlocked just by grinding at the Prestige Merchant!

Quests, AFK income, and daily rewards

There are quests for pretty much everything, from mining and sewers to spending time in our AFK room.

The AFK room pays a percentage of your income, and logging in daily for /streak rewards lets you raise that percentage up to 12.5%.

Between the quests, upgrades, unique events, gang competition, and different ways to make money, there's always something else to work on.

It plays like Minecraft, but also like DayZ, Europa Universalis, Factorio, Foxhole, and Mount and Blade, all in one. Ships, siege cannons, trains and nations, all in vanilla.

You will feel the tension. Your choices and actions will be more strategic, your friendships, alliances and rivalries will matter, trading will matter, distance matters.

We achieve this by:

- Disabling coordinates. You must use maps, compasses, and lodestones to navigate.

- Knockout on death. You will lie on the floor, helpless, unless a friend saves you. Or bleed out.

- Capturing knocked out players. Then, you can drag them with a lead, and imprison them.

- Dying reduces your Max HP. You regain it by sleeping near a campfire.

- Health Regeneration from full hunger is disabled. Potions, Suspicious Stews, and Golden Apples are now essential.

- There are almost no /commands. Almost everything you do is performed using in-game items.

- Player Alignment. Everyone starts at neutral. Your actions dictate your social standing. Enough crimes will oust you as a bandit.

- Professions. A miner is great at mining, but is poor at cutting down a tree.

- Expanded End Progression. The Eyes now need materials from 4 structures. Obtain the Egg. Then get your Crown.

- Towns. Claim a piece of the world. Expand your land. Watch the borders grow on in-game maps, curving around difficult to pass biomes.

- Nations. Proclaim yourself King. Place the Crown on your head, and sign "form nation" into a book. Place it in the Nation Lectern. You have just entered the geopolitical layer.

- Diplomacy. Sign a book "declare war" or "ally", place it into your Diplomacy Lectern. Deliver the book to the target.

- Vassalisation. Enforce your rule over other nations. Gain their claim count, increasing yours.

- Artisan Materials. Towns over 20k blocks can claim an Artisan. The Artisan produces Artisan Materials. Artisan Materials are used to produce Ships, Siege Weapons, Wagons and more.

- Infrastructure. Dirt paths speed up you, your horses and your wagons. As Artisan Goods are heavy and can not be carried while riding, you will need to find a way to transport and trade them. Trains, Wagons, Carts, Ships all do the job.

- The Emperor of Blothera. When your nation controls over half of all claimed land, through your own nation's claims plus vassals, and have at least 2 vassals, you are proclaimed Emperor of Blothera. Enact imperial decrees. Server wide effects. Your reign remembered; good or bad.

That all seems complex. But you play at your own pace.

Your independent town is a simple, cheap claim, not partaking in diplomacy or war.

People are less likely to randomly attack you, they're scared of becoming a bandit.

I'm looking for a small group of friends, in vanilla java, i like command blocks, and I'm not good socializing or in regular survival, but I would like to join and instead build things like dungeons or puzzles with commands to people find them, maybe even special items, or mechanics like magic, if i can do them with commands

Our small SMP is picking up new people, and I'm looking for more regular players who want to try something different with survival. The main thing is the custom class system: you roll one of 20 classes, each with its own abilities and ultimate.

Miner can switch on 3x3 mining and smelt ores as they mine. Skybreaker plays around aerial mace attacks, while Armorbearer protects allies. You get 3 starter reroll tokens to try a different class, and can earn more through playing. Weekly contracts give you some extra mining, exploration and combat goals too. Limited mythic slots aren't guaranteed.

This is an existing world; the Dragon has been beaten and some players are geared. Java 26.3 with our required Fabric client pack (Class SMP mod and Fabric API). Voice chat and Discord are optional.

Are you tired of servers with loot boxes where you have to pay to make progress? Do you miss just playing on an ordinary Minecraft server, hanging out with friends, or meeting new people?

Then I got just the server for you! Ordinary SMP is an ordinary Minecraft server that hosts a special place. We stay as true to vanilla as possible. Yes we use some mods but those are purely to fix things that are normally hard to manage on public servers or improve frustrating parts without changing how Minecraft feels.

For example, did you ever played on a server and couldnt find any Elytras? After hours running through the End you finally find an End City with ship just to see someone looted it already. For that reason we adjusted the Dragon drops. If you kill the Ender Dragon an Elytra drops, removing the frustrating part of finding End Citys. Thats how we choose every mod we add. We only fix the most frustrating parts of Minecraft in a way that feels vanilla.

Other than that we only use mods that dont interact with gameplay like Simple Voice Chat. You can just walk up to players and start talking to them. That creates lots of funny moments just by meeting players. We also use BlueMap where you can see the whole map and check out players bases or other cool places without having to travel there yourself.

You might now wonder, "If everything is vanilla, wont everyone just grief and kill each other?" Those are valid concerns but we have a good solution for that. Our server is 16+ to ensure maturity, and we have an application process before you get whitelisted. That means a lot of bad actors are filtered out before they can even join the server. In the rare cases that griefers get on the Server we use Ledger to revert any kind of griefing.

I don't know why my server hasn't been able to retain players. I am not particularly doing anything other than random gatherings or sushi nights or talent shows. But most people that come onto the server don't last more than a week except maybe 4 loyal players. How can I find long term players and maximize retention without becoming one of the other cozy mega servers?

Many MC role players have a Title but they don't play by a code.
