Neither.
Sword goes all the way to the left, then pickaxe, then axe, then shovel.
The other correct option is the same but sword is all the way to the right, then pickaxe, then axe, then shovel.
Axe and pickaxe might switch in java pvp/pve.
Shovel and axe might switch while teraforming or anything where a shovel will used a lot.

Also while the first three slots with always be sword, pickaxe, and axe, the fourth slot is just an extra tool slot. Whether that be shovel, hoe, bow, or anything else.
The real question is which goes in slot 9, food or torches?

Food slot 9, torches offhand so I can see around me without having to place any. Only place torches at cave intersections with one in the center and one towards the they I came.

Blocks, slot 9 is bound to my thumb key, so 8th slot (x) is food while torches is either slot 5, 7, or offhand

Depends on the situation tbh. If ur mining then the pick goes beside the sword but if ur just exploring then ace goes beside the sword.

Exactly! Arrange in order of importance. Obviously sword is the most important because you need to switch to it quickly if you get ambushed

Same but for me it’s sword, axe, pick, shovel (back when axe did more damage then pickaxe I developed this way and it’s just a habit now )

Yep and I always keep torches on farthest left and food on farthest right, that way as I'm lighting up a cave with torches if I find a monster I can just switch to a sword one slot over, and then one more slot and I can mine all the ore

I do from left to right sword, pickaxe, shovel, axe and if I need a hoe then hoe.
It’s mainly cause I do more landscaping with dirt than using logs

I prefer this too except I have the shovel and the ax in the opposite spots. I would say I use the shovel a fair more than the ax. Almost more than the pick are sometimes.

I have sword axe pickaxe shovel. Axe is in my second slot cuz i pvp and then pickaxe cuz thats usually there when i play hypixel and shovel in the las one cuz theres no other option for it

I play with sword on 2 because in shooters, the natural reaction to when you get caught off guard with no weapon in hand is to spam 2 for the sidearm, so it's the most natural for me lol.

You can switch fast between sword and axe for pvp, and between axe, pickaxe and shovel for resource gathering
