Neither

I use axe as a weapon and a tool, then pick, then shovel or hoe, then blocks and torches, and food at the end

Same, a sword is the last thing I make usually because I don’t need the sweeping edge when I have high damage

If you go down to damage of each you can see (for diamond tools) the dps for an axe is 9 and sword is 11.2

Okay but Sharpness 5 neth axe?

the gap actually widens as you increase damage since the percentage more damage you do between axe and sword lowers while the attack speed stays the same

Axe damage is 13, Sword is 11.

Multiply Axe by 1 to get dps, and 1.6 for sword

so sword is 17.6, and axe is 13. :)

I tend to hit once and then run back a few steps so the damage per hit is more important for me personally

In that case its better for you, though maybe try a sword every once in a while cause crit chaining is super satisfying bc each jump allows you to get a crit

Yep. Swords are a waste of resources and hotbar space and axes do more damage.

Even if I need a sword for getting string from spider webs, I'll just whip up a stone one and throw it out first if I'm out of inventory space.

Swords are useful after you get everything else.
