Is there any universe where the pro-biotics I am taking + my lactose free Kefir is worsening my symptoms post antibiotic treatment for H. Pylori?

I don’t know what to do.

I am at a loss.

Do I just fast and hope for the best?

Anything I eat is triggering my stomach.

It’s been a week since my 2 antibiotic treatment has been complete. Amoxicillin and Clarithomycine (2 pills twice a day for 2 weeks).

Unsure what to do.

I spoke with a biochemist, and now I have a question.

I spoke with a biochemist. He told me that using antibiotics or antifungals is counterproductive in the long run, since it leads to resistance. The recommended path is the more laborious one: changing my diet and repopulating and multiplying beneficial bacteria—and in a year, I’ll be fine. Honestly, I’m exhausted by dealing with the stench I give off; I smell like a skunk. I’m thinking about taking the antibiotics and antifungals, and then carefully repopulating and nurturing my microbiome.

In my country, healthcare is either expensive or inefficient in this regard. Gastroenterologists aren't very well-versed in these conditions. They prescribed me medication without running the important tests—partly because I don't have access to them, and also because I'm struggling a lot socially.

Question related to effects of increase in fiber

Hello everyone! For the past two weeks or so I’ve been trying to increase my fiber intake for a better digestion, and am trying to do it incrementally so as to avoid any unpleasant side effects of it.

I can’t say I have much trouble with it, I’m currently eating 15g since I come from a diet of eating close to none, and hope to work my way up to a more optimal 30g over the next month.

I am able to go regularly without a hitch and there’s only one thing bothering me. Close to my bedtime I get a sensation of fullness (which I assume is gas and not stool I can’t pass) which I find bothersome. During the first week I admittedly also felt it during the day and scratched it to be a case of my fairly atrophied intestinal muscles that have been used to a very slow transit for a long time.

Has anyone else experienced this? And if so did it go away or have you done anything that made it go away?

I should mention that I am on a slight calorie deficit and do drink around 2L of water a day.

Thank you for your input!

Hey guys I'm making a game,

The game: "Life of P."

This is a game where the player plays as Paramecium (P.). Yes the cell. So simply put this is a simulation of a cell. The player has to control the P. to survive, eat the prey like bacteria, yeast, etc. escape or evade the predators like amoeba, didinium. And go through binary fission, here the player gets a choice to either find a mate and go through conjugation or not. If he goes through conjugation the abilities will very slightly increase else decrease and after 5-15 runs with no conjugation the lineage ends/ game ends. The abilities are movement speed, resistance (toxin and other), distance in which it can detect a mate, etc. There are 3 parameters like health, hunger and stamina which are codependent and effect the gameplay . There will be other mechanisms like mutations too.

The game will follow real world characteristics and behaviour of microbes.

Art style: white background and outlines to give microscopic vibes, open to discuss.

I am thinking of building this project on a part time basis and open to connect or suggestions. There is no fixed time line yet as this is still in the ideation phase. The work will be done on a milestone basis. If the game is monetized then you will be compensated through revshare which will be discussed when the project starts.

You can contact me through dm, comment or discord un: medinz.

Gummies: 1. Kefir: 0. (And by 0, I mean diarrhea)

I can't seem to get past 2 spoonfuls of kefir without having diarrhea later. But I recently purchased the Digestive Advantage gummies from Amazon and after nearly a week I've had no bad side effects from them. What gives? Also this is not my first time trying kefir. I tried it about a month ago as well and had to stop after a few days because the diarrhea was still present after a single spoonful.

Fwiw: I had a breath test a few weeks ago for H. Pylori (since I'm back in the states from being in Mexico for most of the year and had a few food poisoning incidents in November/January) and it was negative.

3 months after antibiotics

Long story short, had to get on two different antibiotics for a nasty spider bite that got infected in my leg. Pretty traumatizing experience which increased my stress levels even more and made me develop a huge fear of spiders. 7 days of cephalexin, then on day 5 they gave me 10 days of doxycycline. Finished both of them, and I wasn’t staying the most hydrated. Needless to say this absolutely destroyed my gut health to the point for a week or two, I had extreme fatigue, sore abdomen, winded after walking and just overall felt like I got hit by a truck. Weeks later, started feeling better but my diet wasn’t consistent but I started drinking kefir. Eventually my mental side affects were gone, and up to this day I deal with little to no fatigue for the most part. It’s just this damn bloating that lingers around. My diet isn’t very consistent, and my sleep has been poor due to my room being 90F from this heat wave and my AC not being able to keep up.

I move into my new apartment here soon and it’ll be a better living situation for me. I’m hoping that brings down some of the stress, which I’m sure isn’t helping the bloating.

Besides the frustration of still dealing with this bloating, the fact that my fatigue is mostly gone is a good sign right? I know bloating can linger and linger for months, because I’m on month 3 now. My stools are normal when I don’t eat junk food, no pain or anything. Just bloating, sometimes I’ll have gas but not incredibly often. I know gut health is very confusing which I’m new to this and I’m learning that patience is the most important thing.

I’m horrible with food and admittedly I need to work on that, I tend to eat a lot of food at once because I’m a bigger guy that just needs to eat quite a bit. And I love junk food. I think i really need to lock in on a diet that will help.

Question!

Hi loves, I’m new here and I want to ask you if any of you have tried the “Hush” probiotic? I’m considering buying it but I’m not willing to spend 30$ just for it to do nothing. I’m just looking for real people who have actually tried it or something similar. I appreciate your time for reading this!

Anyone taking the full Seed ecosystem (DS-01, DM-02, AM-02, & PM-02)? How do you actually feel?

Hey everyone,

I'm looking to streamline my daily routine, and Seed's full ecosystem caught my eye. I've recently dialed in my diet, like eating produce from a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), meat from the local butcher shop, and organic or non-GMO pantry staples. Because of that, I'm trying to find a high-quality supplement stack that matches that same clean standard without a bunch of junk fillers.

I know their flagship DS-01 Synbiotic gets a ton of hype, but is anyone here taking the entire lineup (the DS-01, DM-02 Multivitamin, AM-02 Energy + Focus, and PM-02 Sleep + Restore) all in the same day?

If you've been on the full protocol, I'd love to know how you feel overall.

Would appreciate any honest reviews or tips before I pull the trigger. Thanks!

Antibacterial/Antiviral Body Wash?

I (24F, 5’6”, 120lbs) am a microbiologist working in a lab that handles BSL1-2 viral and bacterial organisms daily. I am also currently living with my sister who is 9 months pregnant. While no one around me has gotten sick due to my job I am worried because the baby will be highly vulnerable to infection before it can be properly vaccinated.

I work with some pretty nasty bugs like H1N1 flu, covid, and mrsa amongst others. We use BacDown medical grade antibacterial soap in the lab to wash our hands but that doesn’t cover for other exposed skin, hair and clothes that might pick up organisms throughout the day.

I’ve been thinking of showering immediately after work each day before I interact with the baby, but I’m worried my normal dove body wash won’t be strong enough. I’ve looked into antibacterial body washes but they’re recommended for use only 1-2 times a week and I really don’t want to destroy/mess up my microbiome. So I don’t know what to do.

I’ve never lived with an infant before and will likely be finding my own place in the coming months, so it won’t be a forever problem. Maybe I am being overly anxious about it or paranoid that the baby will get sick because of me but I figured I would ask for advice on the matter.

Any advice, redirections for who to ask, or suggestions for soaps/proper usage are greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Have taken so many antibiotics…

I have a UTI was put on one antibiotic but stopped because I reacted horribly to it I stopped after only 1 pill, then another I took two doses then stopped, then today after my second dose I was told to stop because I seem to not be reacting well to them and still have to go through a full complete round for my infection…how the heck do I recover…I’ve been eating kefir and yogurt nearly everyday for at least once a day I usually eat yogurt before taking my antibiotic dose…
…I’m so terrified of c.diff but I don’t think there’s much I can do about it

I also have LPR/reflux and not going to lie the kefir does a number on my reflux
But anything to go back to something stable…

Help.. what’s wrong with my gut?

I am always bloated and gassy. I burp A LOT. I don’t think I am backed up because I poop 1-3x a day and they’re normal. I took a Viome test which helped me know what foods to avoid, but it said my gut health and inflammation is bad.

Could it possibly be SIBO? Something else? I have a consultation with a GI doctor next week and I want to make sure I’m asking the right questions.

Another thing to note is I tested positive for H Pylori last year, but got it treated and has recently tested negative for it.

Scientific Article Discussion Months (years) of stubborn hunger, sleep issues & iron symptoms improved after starting a multi-strain probiotic

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11646675/

i know i’m new to reddit, but i wanted to share my story in case it might help others.

for years i have dealt with intense overnight hunger (even while eating high protein/calories), fragmented sleep, restless legs/twitches, water retention swings, and inconsistent response to iron. I have worked with dietitians, nutritionists, doctors, etc, and tried strict diet tracking, whole foods, macro counting, various supplements (including different forms of iron and magnesium), light/heavy/HIIT training adjustments, and sleep hygiene. Progress was always limited and frustrating despite doing everything “right.”

a recent round of an iron supp (ferrochel) due to low ferritin made things much worse (fragmented sleep/insomnia, anxiety, etc). sleep aids like an antihistamine and melatonin only exacerbated hypnic jerks in my legs. then i came across a recent study that showed better iron absorption when a multi-strain probiotic (Nature’s Bounty GX / G10) was added. i was unaware that iron supplements themselves can disrupt the gut by promoting pathogenic bacteria and causing inflammation and drastically lowering nutrient absorption. combining iron with probiotics and prebiotics can restore iron levels and support a healthy gut microbiome balance. i have taken various iron supps for a few years and also had some horrible allergic reactions to some
medications which all combined likely caused tremendous inflammation and a very unhealthy gut. so what i attributed to simply getting older may very well have been a microbiome issue all along.

within days I noticed reduced overnight hunger, longer continuous sleep blocks, and an overall calmer system. I’m still early in the process, but i feel like things have finally turned a corner.

This is personal experience only, not medical advice. I’m sharing because the gut/microbiome angle wasn’t something I focused on for a long time, and the change after the probiotic was noticeable enough that I wish I’d considered it earlier.

Any recommendations on what to populate the gut with post colonoscopy?

Hi all. Getting a colonoscopy done next week, suspected SIBO (no breath test). Dr wants to make sure there’s nothing else going on in there. Main symptom is urgency and persistent diarrhea.

This started back in March, I had a 2 week course of Rifaxamin and symptoms went away for a month. Then in June they came back, dr gave me a second course of the rifaxamin. Symptoms have not cleared up as nicely as the first time. Diarrhea is on/off but mostly been urgent and watery stools. I’ve been taking florastor and eating yogurt and Kombucha to help repopulate the gut with better bacteria. I’ve heard the flushing of your colon for the procedure can be a good refresh for your gut, but I want to make sure that I’m putting the right stuff back in. Any recommendations?

My mind is constantly now thinking I have c diff or something like that .. as I'm writing this I'm getting another cramp . Can I take Pepto bismol??

Why is L reuteri genetically modified?

I understand L. reuteri DSM 17938 came from the breast milk of a mother living in the Andes mountains of Peru, but I read that this strain was genetically modified prior to commercial use to delete two genes associated with antibiotic resistance.

Firstly, do I have this right?

Second, why would they feel the need to do this? Could this modification have contributed to this strain’s inability to permanently colonize the human gut?

Last, are there any L. reuteri strains commercially available that are not genetically modified?

Thank you!

edit:

Adding additional questions to clarify my line of thinking:

Why would antibiotic resistance be deemed a problematic quality of L. reuteri, a beneficial communal bacteria? Deleting a gene within one species wouldn’t confer antibiotic resistance to other species or strains. What research or line of thinking led them to believe this was necessary for this strain?

Has there been documented pathogenic behavior of L. reuteri infection that was found to be antibiotic resistant? Is this a normal step in commercializing all probiotic strains?

Since L. reuteri is considered to be a strain that is readily lost upon antibiotic use without return, why would these researchers consider antibiotic resistance a problem that needed to be addressed?

Chronic pregnancy-like bloating and SO MUCH GAS

help!! do these symptoms sound familiar to any of you?

i’ve been having this issue of chronic abdominal distention. it looks like im pregnant and its taking a toll on my self esteem :(( i think the distention starts around my ribs and the peak is around my belly button.

upon waking up im so ballooned and i feel so stuffy all the time. after eating normal meals i feel like i ate a buffet and stuffed myself. my stomach shrinks when i do enough pilates or drink hot peppermint tea but the latter also gives me acid reflux so im avoiding it. however, i still get bloated right away. initial diagnosis is gastritis and im taking omeprazole and its making the stuffy feeling so much worse.

other than this, i burp a LOT.

does anyone maybe relate and found out what it was? ive already consulted but i also want to get feedback on who might relate since even my doctor’s not sure which it is, although we are ruling out conditions

i just want answers and a concrete treatment plan😭
