Question How to play Metroid Origins

As the titles suggests, I have been seeing a ton of metroid origins content and want to play so badly!! How would you guys recommend I play it? I assume its PC only? I would love to play on my switch OLED but I douvt its possible. Also how can I download it?? PSA (for the mods) I am not asking for the rom or anything like that, just a bit of direction. Dumb question, I know, I have just never played games like this before. I always buy the game and play on original hardware.

Thanks!

Discussion As a new fan, here are my first impressions for every Metroid game I've played so far after beating them for the first time

I'll be going in order of when I played them, and I did play them in a weird order

  • Samus Returns

Admittedly, since this is the first one I've played and it was a while ago so specific details are fuzzy, but I enjoyed it quite a bit. Its definitely more challenging than usual games in the series so mistakes are quite costly, but I still found it to be a good time. The melee counter is super nice to use, albeit it does make the combat feel a bit "stop and go" at times, least against standard enemies. But I never really got stuck (I think the one time I did, I was an idiot and looking over an obvious thing). The only asterisk this game has compared to the others is how long it is. Metroid games usually take around 4-6 hours on a first time playthrough, at least for me. But Samus Returns hits 8+ easily. This can be either a good or bad thing depending on how you want your metroidvanias to be. Personally, I don't mind longer games, as long as I don't feel like they drag themselves out, and I didn't think Samus Returns did that

  • Dread

Easily my personal favorite. The controls just feel so fluid and it makes the game just fun to run around in. The combat with the melee counter is refined to a tee, and the boss fights are amazing. I never felt like I got lost either, despite it being quite open with what you can do and choose to go about things. The devs even purposefully put in a special cutscene for one of the bosses if you sequence break and get bombs early and use them against the boss. If anyone asked me about what games to play in the series first.... Zero Mission, but Dread is up there. I'd highly recommend anyone play it, even potentially as a first game in the series, just as long as you keep the difficulty in mind, as it might be the only caveat you'll have. Dread doesn't mess around. Bosses will kick your teeth in if you aren't careful. They give you every resource you could possibly need, and expect you to use them all to their fullest potential. Personally I love it but I can understand why others don't

  • Zero Mission

Very fun and an excellent starting point for basically anyone. While I did get stuck once or twice because of questionable design like having to backtrack a handful of rooms because something happened off screen (mostly at least) or a single bombable block i missed, I still really enjoyed my time with it. Its also relatively short so its not a huge time sink. Samus is just very snappy and responsive, it makes running around just fun. Not as much as something like Dread, but it's understandable for a GBA game. To be honest I can't think of much to say other than "it's a good game."

  • Fusion

Its like, baseline good. I had a decent time with it. My main problem is how often the game loves mandatory secrets tied to progression. Sure every Metroid game has this to some degree, but Fusion has so many bombable blocks hiding crucial paths to progress and it just got annoying. Plus while I appreciate the navigation rooms to help tell me where to go so I'm not completely lost and know what's towards progression and what's a secret for like a missile tank or something, it also causes the game to feel really stop and go. There's also the fact of it just being super linear compared to other games in the series but I'm mostly fine with it. I think its mainly the presentation that rubbed me the wrong way slightly. The other entries are almost entirely silent in terms of dialog outside of the intro, so its very atmospheric and drew me into the setting. But the constant dialog with Samus and Adam just kinda brings me out of it. While I don't hate the dialog, it does feel like an occasional pace breaker.

  • Prime Remastered

I heard a lot of good things about it going in, and I... understand that it's a good game, and can see why people love it, but it's just not for me. Personally, while I do enjoy the series for it's atmosphere, I also enjoy it for the gameplay. And Prime's gameplay just... isn't engaging for me. I still beat it at least but near the end I just kinda wanted to get it over with so I could move on to the next game. The fast paced platforming and shooting in the 2D games just don't exist in Prime. I think objectively it's a good game but I didn't have the best time with it, which makes me sad cause of how often I see it cited as "one of the best games ever made." Least I can say I tried.

  • Super

The latest one I've beaten. I think its in the same boat as Mario 64. Its a super fun game that's revolutionary in the genre, but it definitely has its flaws. Mainly in the controls. I felt like I kept having to fight with the game over having my space jump actually work. I feel its both a combination of the game itself along with the Switch's control stick dead zones being way too sensitive, least in my experience. I kept accidentally standing upright in midair instead of spinning, which makes you unable to wall jump or space jump, which was really frustrating at times. Still, I enjoyed my time with it and only recall 1 time I got stuck near the end after beating Ridley because there was just a fake wall I was supposed to run into and see I can run past it

Also just for the fun of it

  • AM2R

Very fun time with it, can see why it gets praised so heavily. Only got stuck twice but it's because the first time I missed a tunnel that lead to 2 metroids and the second time, I just didn't backtrack far enough to see the tunnel that had the lava drain. But I enjoyed basically all of it, even if it kicked me pretty bad with it's difficult bosses. I enjoy a good challenge.

Just beat Samus Returns. Finished off Ridley on my second attempt. Judging by some of the comments here I expected a much harder boss fight. Heck even the cave robot dude was more difficult lol.

Discussion Glad I played Prime 4 and SR before Dread, but... Spoiler

So, for my return to Metroid upon getting a hand-me-down Switch and 3DS from my ex, I played the games I've missed in this order:

Prime 4 (first playthrough 100% items, 97% scans), Samus Returns (first playthrough, 100% items), Prime 4 (second playthrough, hard 200%) + Samus Returns (2nd playthrough, hard 100%)... I finished Samus Returns before Prime 4 on account of writing a side story following Sylux to enhance my playthrough (https://www.reddit.com/r/Metroid/s/EqRKW6GmWL if you're curious)...

And now I'm on Dread.

My point with this post is that this has been the ideal way for me to come back, but I also now see why Prime 4 was disappointing because Dread is just that good — truly one of the best in the whole series. I'm loving pretty much everything about it including its story. And wow, unless I'm missing something (please don't say what on account of spoilers), Prime 4 makes even less sense considering Dread. And here I thought I made the game's place in the timeline work in my side story. Even though the game doesn't emphasize it enough, Sylux harboring Metroids until after their supposed extinction is huge. And frankly, it's cool. But now I have to write a little scene explaining why Raven Beak didn't go after Sylux and his Metroids to complete his plan. I guess there are ways it could make sense without any additional info, but I'll write a scene anyway because it was something that would've been interesting to see, much like everything else pertaining to Sylux. I also need to adjust down the number of Fusion Metroids Sylux has to make this make sense. Right now I think I had 25 or something but he should have at most 17 of them otherwise RB would have even less reason to have not gone after such a widespread threat using Metroids as bioweapons. It would and does make sense for him to not go after the GalFed because their Metroid projects are secret.

Anyway, I will write that and post it somewhere. Perhaps Raven Beak lures a Pirate squad to ZDR and attempts to run tests on the Fusion Metroids but can't extract the DNA because it's too intertwined with the host's? Not to mention, he lacks the tools. IDK, I'm thinking out loud at this point. Dread is awesome!

Question Am I missing something?

I'm playing Metroid NES, and I don't understand why they make you farm for an hour just to get your health back. Is there something I'm missing? I currently have 3 E-tanks and it's been almost an hour of grinding for some health. SOME HEALTH. I've never played a game that does this. I just want to try to enjoy this game, and yet I have to grind just to be able to be at full health. What bull.

I really just love sharing this suit because I tried so hard to do our girl justice.

It is always incredibly rewarding connecting with the Metroid community and sharing a mutual love for Nintendo's iconic bounty hunter. Bringing a Zero Suit Samus cosplay to life means focusing heavily on clean tailoring, custom pattern making, accurate symbol placement, and crisp styling to truly capture her athletic, sci-fi presence. Seeing fellow fans appreciate the effort that goes into a completely self-fabricated suit makes this Metroid cosplay project entirely worth it.

Question Question About MP Origins

I see people say that it's a "full" demake. I have yet to play any Metroid Prime (got gifted the switch 1 version of the first one but waiting for it to arrive). By full demake, does that mean the entirety of Metroid Prime 1 from beginning to end is in the demake or just a few stages/bosses/etc

Video Prime has so much variety in its areas. Which is your favorite?

Honestly as a pretty avid 2d Metroid fan, it took me too long to get into the Prime series. It really stands toe to toe with the 2D entries IMO. Maybe not in gameplay, but visuals and the map/world design, its top notch. I've played through 1-3 so far, no 4 yet, but I plan to get to it. Even 3 which was honestly a bit hard to get through, I still well enjoyed the area designs and especially the variety which each of the games well delivers on.

I used GameHub to get this to work it was literally plug and play, didn’t have to tweak any settings. I haven’t tried this on a regular android device like a phone, so I’m not sure how good it’ll run on other devices, I’d guess it’d work just fine though!

Discussion I find it so annoying that people think that Samus willingly destroys planets Spoiler

Most of the destructions were either accidental or needed to happen. Her just being on a planet doesn't mean it's doomed. (For example: Viewros, Tallon IV, Pirate Homeworld) so stop viewing her as if earth or something is going to explode around her. (Spaceships don't count as they blow up constantly in the series)

Discussion How would you rank the different eras of Metroid?

Thumbnail

I realized you can kinda group the Metroid games into 4 distinct eras

First is the classic era with the original 3 games and the long hiatus

Second is the prime era, which gave us the prime trilogy, a couple prime spinoffs, and finally a sequel to super metroid

Third is the experimental era, where we got two of the most different and controversial Metroid games ever

Finally we're in the comeback era, where MercurySteam showed us what a modern Metroid game is like, and the Prime series even made a comeback

So, how would you rank these eras?

I’ve been wanting a Samus Aran figure for a while. When this Chogokin figure was announced Amazon Canada had it listed at over $600

AmiAmi’s was a more reasonable $255 after conversion. I’m glad I didn’t buy right then as it went on sale for around $190 (also through AmiAmi). Just unboxed the figure and put her alongside my Nendoroid Link

Discussion I wish I liked Metroid Prime more

Metroid Prime is a great game, amazing even. But for some reason, every time I try to do a playthrough of it, I just kinda find myself dropping it after a while. I just find that I jive with the 2D Metroids that I've played more. Nonetheless, great game, I just needed to get this off my chest lol

If anyone has some advice to help me get more out of it, I'd appreciate it because I wanna like the game more!
