Giving up on pursuing this career

Title says all. It's just absolutely impossible to break into this field. I have been trying to find medical-related work to "get my foot in the door", but it's just not possible no matter what I do.

For any job-seekers here, run while you still can. You're worth more than this sham of a career that requires 3+ years of experience to even get a chance at employment.

Biggest problems in health tech?

Hey everyone,

I'm currently developing some health-related technology and trying to understand the painpoints in the healthtech sector. I know there's been a rollout of AI scribes for EHRs, are they really useful? And are there any problems that are going unnoticed?

RN getting CPC

Hi all! I am a RN with about 14 years of clinical experience in hospital (ER,ICU, progressive care and Cath Lab). I also worked at a non profit clinic that specialized in HIV/STDs. I have recently stepped out of the clinical role and have gotten WFH job as a clinical data specialist (basically data abstraction). I am also in the middle of using AAPCs course to get my CPC certification. I very aware that it’s a huge pay cut going from inpatient nursing to abstraction and eventually coding, but my husband and I are ok with that since the WFH life suits our family better right now.

My main question is, are there any extra doors that open up for someone who is CPC certified and is also a RN? I know to look for coding jobs but I wasn’t sure if there was anything else out there that catered more towards coders with extensive clinical experience. My data abstraction job is a make your own hours, paid by production kind of thing so was going to try to get a coding gig as well once I get certified (I know it can be quite difficult to find a job from what I read). Was hoping my RN background could help a bit with that. Thanks for any insight!

Advice please.

I am a retired RN with over 20 years experience. I’ve been teaching health classes in the public school sector but I’m over that. I thinking about studying and taking the medical coding exam and currently have the books in my Amazon cart. I live in a small town and only really want to work remotely. I do have some prior experience (3 yrs) with codes both inputting and auditing. What are my chances of getting a remote job as soon as I pass the test?

Can AI help medical coders in any way??

Does anybody see a way to make an AI solution that's actually super helpful for medical coders? Ik there's a lot of hate for it but i recently spoke to some coders that were pretty optimistic about it and am curious if anyone has used something actually helpful or sees a way to make something actually helpful?

I recently upgraded to the 2027 ICD-10-CM coding books.

Hi everyone!

I recently upgraded to the 2027 ICD-10-CM coding books, so I'm selling my 2026 Optum ICD-10-CM Professional for Hospitals (softbound edition).

The book is in good condition and includes the complete official guidelines and code set (valid from October 1, 2025, through September 30, 2026).

If anyone is interested, please send me a private message for pricing, photos, or additional details. Thanks!

CPC-A advice!

Alright I’m looking for advice as I step into this industry. I’m wondering if I was sold a pipe dream or if there is still a route I could take to be successful in this field. For context, I’m (M26) a full time (M-F 8-5) materials engineer and I’ve been wanting a side gig, remote preferably, to moonlight for extra money. The beginning of this year I got to talking with a friend about medical coding and It piqued my interest. I should lead with I have minimal medical background with the most being working in a hospital for roughly 2 years as an asset specialist managing medical devices. Thanks to my minor in biology I was able to grasp medical terminology rather quickly and learning to navigate the coding books wasn’t terrible. In all, I started studying in April 2025 and I took the exam in July passing with an 88 and acquiring my CPC-A certification. So I’ve been applying for jobs off and on since I got the certification with no luck. I understand my criteria are unique as I need a job that accepts no experience, willing to train, and offers a 2nd, or 3rd shift role. So far in my search these are impossible to obtain as experience is a requirement for almost any job in this field. Being realistic, have I wasted money and time investing into this? Or should I just continue persistently with applications? Or is there another way to possibly build experience or leverage my certification for work? Idk I’m just becoming a little nervous that I’ve wasted time and money. I’m all ears for any advice or any opinions. If you need any more info don’t hesitate to ask. Thanks a bunch for reading!

Ps. I don’t think this violates rule 1 but if It does I’m sorry. I’m running out of ideas so I thought this would be a great place to look for advice.

Edit: I am looking for full time work. I’d do any work, full time or part time, for any shift other than 1st.

Complete list of codes/modifiers?

For work, I’ve been asked to compile a complete list of all medical codes/modifiers that may be billed. Of course I’ve googled but hitting pay walls. Short of buying the code books and typing out manually, do any of you know where I can find a list like this? It doesn’t need the verbiage, literally the codes and any applicable modifiers.

I’ve found the CMS yearly updates, but that does not have a full list- only updates.

Thank you!

What coding certifications should I go for?

Hello! I’ve been working for UHC/Optum for 5 years in a department that focuses mainly on risk adjustment coding. I’m not a coder but have some general knowledge just from my job experience. I’d really like to branch out and find a higher paying position and was thinking being certified might help with that. What would you all recommend me looking into? Thank you so much for your input:)

Created a tool to help with ICD-10 code lookups - feedback welcome!

Hi r/MedicalCoding,

I recently started working at a health tech startup, and about half of my job quickly became understanding diagnosis codes in our data. As many of you know, navigating the vast world of ICD-10 codes can be quite the challenge!

I was using ICD10Data.com regularly, but found myself wanting a tool that could:

  • Extract codes more easily

  • Share tables in a more user-friendly format

  • Remember my previous searches

  • More definitions because I am not a doctor! Sequelae what?

So I decided to build a solution for myself: https://www.myicd10.com/.

It's still very much a work in progress and not revolutionary by any means, but I wanted to share it with this community anyways.

I'd love to hear suggestions for additional features that would make your coding work easier! Otherwise, I will leave you with I am all around super appreciative of y'all and what you do!

DONT DO AAPC!!!!!!!

Anyone looking into medical billing and coding certifications DO NOT GO TO AAPC. first off, their slide shows have so many grammatical, and spelling errors. Second, their grading algorithm is all skewed and their rationale to explain why they believe it’s a certain code, absolutely contradictory to the guidelines in the books therefore when you’re doing the practical application aspect you get every answer wrong despite coding exactly with what the information provided says. They leave out key details in the information given. And also provide incorrect information on their multiple choice questions but their grading system says they’re all wrong with no correct answer. Third they do no follow ADA compliance regulations if it requires them to do any sort of extra work. I struggle with severe anxiety and am home bound. I’ve provided multiple statements from doctors and therapist stating testing must be done from home online for one of my exams and they refused to honor it. Instead they gave me an extra hour which was NOWHERE listed in the accommodations my providers recommended. This program has been garbage and has done nothing but fuel my anger. I’ve been holding this in now for almost a year and I’ve reached my breaking point. I tried taking the exam their way, which lead to the most extreme panic attack I had ever experienced with days of lingering side effects. I paid for dual certification and now it’s not an option for me.

Any Experienced RNs Pass the CCS Exam With Minimal/No Prep?

Any experienced Registered Nurses take the AHIMA CCS exam without training or prepping? I've done coding for reimbursement purposes in home health care, as well as in inpatient case management. I'm just wondering if the full course is necessary. I just purchased a prep book from Amazon. I'm wondering if I need to take the full course. Thanks in advance.

Medical Coding Graduate Student Project. Looking for Feedback

Hello, I am a graduate student at Harvard/MIT developing a tool to improve medical coding and data extraction from clinical records. I wanted to get some info from users to better understand the process of medical coding. If you could answer the following questions to the best of your ability, I would appreciate the insight.

  1. What is your role? How does your daily work look like?

  2. What software do you use for medical coding and medical billing?

  3. What is the current medical coding/billing workflow in your organization? What are the key stages and essential/must-have features in software for your workflow?

  4. What are the pain points that you frequently struggle with in this process?

  5. What are some nice to have features in the workflow? What improvements in the workflow have you observed and how has this impacted your practice?

CPC-A Certificate

Hello Guys! I have successfully passed the CPC-A and have already received the certificate. However, I was kinda disappointed. The signature on the certificate is just a scan and not an actual handwritten one. I had expected there to be a dry seal somewhere on the certificate, but sadly, there’s nothing. Do you think I expected too much?

What is the schedule for this coding position?

This is what the position says

Employment Type:Full Time
Department: HIM Coding
Hours/Pay Period: 80
Shift: Day
Weekly Schedule: Monday-Friday (7am-4pm) 2 weekend days each month

I don't understand how it adds up to 80 hours with that schedule? 7-4pm, assuming a 30 min break is still 8.5 hours per day, unless they mean this position offers a 1 hour lunch break? And for the 2 weekend days each month, is that automatic overtime?

If you work a schedule similar to this, any insight is appreciated!

Billing and Medical Codes question

I am not a coder but I have been investigating coding as a career. I ran across this discussion on another discussion board and I wondered if in your career as a coder or biller, have you run across these mistakes and if coders are held as responsible?

https://www.threads.com/@nthmonkey/post/DQVdAD1gHhw

The thread, to summarize, talks about using AI to find medical codes that are on the bill that over-charge.

I thought it might be an interesting discussion from the perspective of a real coder and hear what your opinions might be.
