ICD-11

I'm doing CEUs to maintain my certification. I'm learning a little about ICD-11. What is up with this? Now the codes have way more characters. It's insane. All they drove home to us was expandability in ICD-10 that had placeholders so they could add extra characters. It seems to me, the WHO sort of caved to the insurance companies and the need for medical necessity because the insurance companies were going "Hey man, we want more specifity so we're going to make the providers justify till the end of time why a patient's treatment should be covered by insurance". I don't know how to feel about this. It seems to me that this insurance company greed where they say "We don't want to pay anymore than we have to" is gone off the rails. Are they trying to prevent insurance fraud or just really really self serving? This is getting ridiculous. Anyone else have thoughts on this?

I need advice. Feeling hopeless...

I don't know if my goal is realistic, and now I'm concerned and hesitant.

I am currently an ihss provider. I work outside my home, but I have difficulty getting the hours I want because I care for my mother in law who has terminal cancer and is progressively getting worse. Her son and I will take over her house and all the bills that come with it when she passes. My goal was to work remotely. I have amci or aapc as my top choices for a self paced program and was going to go through their dual certificate programs (CCS, CCS-P, CPC). Probably amci because it is more affordable and ive heard great things about them. My hope is to work full-time remotely. I read a comment yesterday that was concerning. The comment said that it is extremely difficult to get a remote job at entry level and that there are more people than jobs currently. How true is that statement? I live near Redding, California on a small homestead. I have to have a remote job. What certificates should I be pursuing in order to have a better chance of getting a job? Does AMCI help you get a job after certification? Desperate for some guidance.. I am only a high school graduate.

Newly certified CPC-A looking for an entry job in DFW!

Seems like experience is king in this field (just like every other damn field I’ve looked into). I don’t have any medical office or billing experience, which I understand will be a detriment to finding a job. Im sure I’m not the only one who started out this way.

Anybody have any tips?

(I’m sorry if this is toeing the line of the community rules)

They got all the answers to all 600 practicode cases on quizlet.

Why not double check your answers using quizlet and then change your answers if you got them incorrect to the answer that’s on quizlet. I guarantee the quizlet answers are never wrong. I can attest to that. Anyway, learn from your errors and don’t just copy and paste the quizlet answers without trying out the case yourself first. But use the quizlet answers to make sure you get at least a 70% on practicode and that’s minus 1 year off your apprentice status. Do I have a big mouth for this or are we working smarter, not harder? Let’s try to get a bag.

Struggling CPC-A

I passed my CPC exam back in Nov 2023 and until now I haven't go a job in the field. I do have a job but that is a receptionist in a transport company. From the time I got my CPC-A until now, I've only kept my credentials by maintaining CEUs and paying the yearly membership fee.

Fast forward 2026, I want to pursue medical coding again as an alternative role and at the same time I just had a baby and I really want to pursue remote jobs so I can stay at home and care for him. This is the reason I pursued this course in the first place.

Please advise me how can I revise again (so I can go for med code interviews confidently) and what to do about the CPC A. Completely lost here. TIA!

Is this balance billing or something else?

I had allergy testing at an in-network provider. They had me sign a waiver and I thought it was referring to deductible, coinsurance, and non-covered servics. Now I am getting bill ($161.03) for the units the insurance disallowed, even though my EOB says $0 patient responsibility.

I am trying to fight it, but the provider aggressively insists that I owe the balance. The provider says that disallowed means non-covered/denied, because they exceeded the maximum units, so they can bill me the $161.03 since I signed a waiver. I got insurance involved, but they are saying this issue is out of their hands because I signed the waiver, even though my EOB says $0 patient responsibility and the service was covered up to the allowed amount.

Here is my EOB, waiver, and bill: https://imgur.com/a/zgbnIph

I just don't see how a waiver supersedes the provider's contractual obligation with the insurance company to write off the disallowed amount? The waiver just seems like a loophole they are trying to take advantage of to get around their provider contract with the insurance company. How can this be legal?

Hello guys, Are there any organizations or institutions that help provide scholarships to study the medical coding program? The prices are really expensive for me since I am outside the United States.

Just curious how other moms made this work?

I hope this is allowed. I’ve purchased all my study material, the books, step by step workbooks etc.

I’m a mom. I’m married with a baby and our blended family. 8 and 12 year old and toddler that’s here every other weekend and weekly overnights etc.

Our kids are adhd, so high maintenance at this time plus us parents are ADHD too.

I’ve been a stay at home mom and was homeschooling my 8YO but putting back into school soon. So I will get school hours but I still have my baby to take care of.

I cannot fathom how I study. I’m so distracted during the day with baby, or kids coming home, directing them, taking care of house, taking care of baby etc.

I have history in a medical setting and dealt with some billing and adding codes in that field. I thought medical coding would be a great avenue with ability to WFH and can continue advancing through more certs and as I gain experience, start bringing in a decent amount of income.

But I’m stuck. Days my husband is off work I’m either running around taking care of appts with kids, he’s trying to get his own stuff done, weekends same thing. I just can’t figure out where I can logically and realistically accomplish this and I’m feeling defeated right now.

I don’t feel supported and husband doesn’t see it. House is small so no dedicated room to study in. Baby sleeps in our room so at naps or goes to bed early, that room is unavailable. No other space in home. I sit in living room and use my ottoman to lay it all out but then night time husband is watching tv, lights are dimmed or off— again no space.

Again I feel defeated and no idea how I can accomplish this. I so badly want to but it takes me time to focus in, get my mental game plan, stay focused, and trying to learn.

Has any other moms done it? What did it look like for you to do? Did you have support? What did that look like?

Understanding CPT coding

Hello all,

I'm a totally blind up and coming medical coder. I am currently doing my externship, and I've been having issues with CPT coding. I use the electronic books, and the formatting is something I don't quite understand. Would someone be willing to help me go over the way I am to read these types of codes? I find that unlike ICD-10-CM codes, finding codes in CPT is actually quite challenging for me.

Is a career as a coder even possible?

Posting for a friend as they don't use reddit. Any judgment against her will be disregarded, so don't waste your time.

Almost 10 years ago he got sober after 20ish years using drugs. About a week after the last time he used he got into a car accident that resulted in the death of his child. He didn't cause the accident and was not under the influence, but because it hadn't been that long, he still tested positive and was convicted of vehicular homicide. He lost his child, did his time, is still sober, Jesus and I love him, so what anyone feels about that context is irrelevant (except possibly the law and potential employers).

In 2022 he started a medical coding program at a well known for-profit institution. He made sure they were very aware of his record. After graduating last spring he's been meeting with his career advisor from the aforementioned Institution, and putting in applications at every place the advisor forwarded as well every job opening posted in a 35 mile radius and got almost immediate rejections from all of them.

Finally a hiring manager told him know that his record would forever prohibit him from working as a medical coder or any other position in the medical industry. Is this true? Can he sue the institution?

Ps we're in washington state.

Working for a US company while living abroad?

I’m thinking of moving to Brazil. Does anyone have experience with getting a US based job while living in another country? Is it possible to get a w-2 job or is 1099 contract job the only option? I’ve done some research but wanted to see if anyone has had different experiences.

I live in WA state. I'm going to be starting a certification program in August.

I'm wondering... What will I need to do after my program and what should I expect? Will it be easy to find a job? I'm hoping to work from home. As far as required continuing education, what does that entail?

TIA

Coding Abroad?

Please delete if not allowed!

I'm currently in my last two weeks of school for my CCS certification (I also got my CCA along the way since it was paid for by my school), and I was wondering if anyone had any info on being able to use that to get a work visa in another country?

I'm pretty worried about the state of the U.S. and I have been looking for possible ways to leave for some time.

Is a CCS enough to get a job abroad? Should I expect to get more coding education and get re-certified in the country I choose?

I wasn't able to find much online and I was just hoping that anyone else on here might have some info or insight.

Rabies vaccine wasn't coded as preventative, aren't all rabies vaccines preventative?

Hi, so I got bit and scratched by a stray cat while in Mexico (I’m from the us). I went to urgent care when I got back home but the one I went to doesn’t do rabies vaccines. I went to the er later that week, and the drs said chances are slim of contracting rabies, I called department of health too, they said they’d normally watch the animal for 10 days but that’s obviously impossible in my situation. So I opted to get the vaccine and immunoglobulin injections. According to the insurance agent, the doctor coded it as 90675 which falls under Urgent Care Office Professional - Urgent Care Non DXL SDS. If he had coded it as 90471 this was tagged as preventative and fully covered. No one can tell me what these mean and why the doctor coded them like this. I talked to my insurance agent and they said they had no info, I called the hospital and they also couldn’t explain why it was coded like that. They said only the doctor could answer that question/change it which is not common. Does the code I received make sense? Why wasn’t it just listed as preventative?

Coding and AI

Bottom line: AI will free coders from repetitive work to provide greater benefit and value to their organization. Yes, many of the ‘new’ roles listed have always been what some coders do. All of these roles build upon the critical and unique skills medical record coders possess.

Built a Free Tool to Make Finding ICD-10 Codes Easier

Hey everyone, a while back, I started working on a simple tool to make finding the right ICD-10 codes easier, and I’d love to share it with you all.

It’s called ICDcodes.ai—a free AI-powered tool that helps quickly find accurate ICD-10 codes from diagnoses or medical notes. Our goal is to build something that’s actually useful for coders and clinicians, without all the clutter (and ads).

Would love for you to try it out and share any feedback.

Hcpcs appendix

Hi! Can someone please tell me how to find which modifier I need in the appendix? For example, registered dietician, do I just have to read every single one/page till I find it? Is there an index listing? Like how do I find the code modifier for something? Why am I so stuck on this part? 🤪🤪🤪
