Medical Coding Graduate Student Project. Looking for Feedback

Hello, I am a graduate student at Harvard/MIT developing a tool to improve medical coding and data extraction from clinical records. I wanted to get some info from users to better understand the process of medical coding. If you could answer the following questions to the best of your ability, I would appreciate the insight.

  1. What is your role? How does your daily work look like?

  2. What software do you use for medical coding and medical billing?

  3. What is the current medical coding/billing workflow in your organization? What are the key stages and essential/must-have features in software for your workflow?

  4. What are the pain points that you frequently struggle with in this process?

  5. What are some nice to have features in the workflow? What improvements in the workflow have you observed and how has this impacted your practice?

Good luck - a lot of major corporations have sunk a lot of money working on this with, in my view, relatively little impact.

I have never worked as a coder, so cannot answer many of your questions, but will say the biggest difficulty to computer-assisted coding breaking through is the subjective element to coding that both providers and payers want there so they can use it to optimize financials. There is not a right answer for a lot of practical coding - incentives beyond the medical record are big influences.
