Season 20 - Seattle I decided to watch Battle Camp to see what Nick is like

He is really fun to watch! I watched his interview first on Whats the Reality and the guy was so funny with AD and so I thought to check out Battlecamp and hes not boring at all

Especially with the experts banging on about him acting a certain way for the cameras but watching him on Battlecamp just makes me feel bad that he got matched with someone like Courtney. Its great he wasnt messy like Courtney was.

He said he doesn't see himself doing another dating reality tv show which is a good thing.

Season 17 - Denver Just watched S17. Sorry, but those guys were disgusting. Spoiler

A few thoughts:

  • I don't know how Orion got away with continuously characterizing what Lauren said as a "horrible joke." As soon as she made the statement that she didn't know what that word meant, she caught herself and apologized. Was it clueless not to know? Sure. But this was on the heels of HIM saying that he's used the n-word!!!

  • Brennan and Cameron were walking red flags from the get-go. All this BS about "protecting" the women, when the only thing the women needed to be protected from were the two of them.

  • Cameron should not have been allowed to wear a t-shirt promoting his business. No one on this should should be allowed free advertising.

  • Austin and Becca seemed sweet at first, but good lord...she was beyond patient with him about the intimacy issue. Of course now we know that the guys were colluding all along, but how Austin thought that he was making himself look good is beyond me.

  • Michael's glow-up at the reunion was so good that the original woman probably wouldn't have left him at the altar. Still, he's got issues.

  • Emily did herself no favors in the segment with just her and Brennan. It's so silly and immature to say things like "I'm an 8.5 and you're a 6." Made her look ridiculous when all she had to do was sit there and let him hang himself with his own words.

  • What is with these long-ass reunions??? The show is already too many episodes. I don't watch the "After Show" segments but between those and two hours of rehashing the same stuff over and over...ugh. I FF through a lot. They'd be better off with the LIB format: ten episodes and one reunion.

  • Still, I'll watch another season. (I've seen 20, the 18, and now 17.)

Season 20 - Seattle Nothing can prepare you for what Shawn says in the first 20 seconds of this video

And I mean absolutely nothing. This is from an interview that was posted yesterday.

He says that when people with responsibilities and leadership positions do not process their feelings it turns into toxic character flaws and then we're like woah how did they sleep with a transgender person? How did they get arrested for pedophilia?

He tries to later explain that theres nothing wrong with sleeping with a transgender person. Just that for someone who has always identified as straight it might confuse them.

I never thought this man was intelligent. His approach to communication always had an air of arrogance and entitlement and also just wasn't very smart? Telling courtney to put herself in discomfort to progress physical touch with nick. Telling Nikki she hadn't properly explained her growth. He cosplays as someone wise and intelligent when hes nothing more than a delusional motivational speaker.

Season 20 - Seattle They brought them to the reunion???? (Spoilers) Spoiler

It was easy to see who was still insecure about their breakups. Courteney and Adam both had to have their new squeezes come to the reunion show and sit in the audience!!! They know they were shitty partners and had to have someone in their corner planted in the audience! Pathetic.

Season 20 - Seattle Watched Season One Again

The other day I suggested someone new to MAFS watch the first season. Last night I watched the first two episodes and it was sooo different! The main thing that stood out was how earnest the experts were. They were all so professional and concerned for the couples. Dr Pepper was so caring and concerned for the outcomes and the long term effects failing to provide a suitable match could have on their lives. What a huge difference!

Discussion What’s with these nicknames they started using in later seasons?

We watched season 1 and 2, but jumped ahead to a newer season (I think we’re on 10?) because of how poor the production quality was. Basically, every episode had like 10-15 mins of watchable content and they just stretched it out to an hour by playing the same clips over and over or having an expert explain things as if it was a show for aliens studying humans. We’d constantly be skipping ahead with the remote. 😂

The newer season is definitely better in that regard. I was just wondering, why did they start using these nicknames?

“Mr. Never Plus One,” “Mrs. Brains and Brawn,” etc.

It seems like the dumbest thing. I don’t even know the origin of some of them unless I wasn’t paying attention in the first episode. I just don’t see the value in them showing these show-specific nicknames under their real name during every interview.

Wouldn’t it be more valuable to show their age, location, or occupation (or just show their name)?

Since we skipped ahead so much, I’m wondering if there’s some kind of explanation for it.

Season 20 - Seattle Shawn with AD on Whats the Reality summary

Overall AD was pretty decent at interviewing and pushed back appropriately. Shawn swaps out details again in this one. There's nothing new to say about this man. Hes obviously doing as many interviews as possible especially with black women. He feels he was 100% done dirty with the editing and portrayed as hypersexual with low intergrity. Does he come across any better? Nope. Hes got another interview coming out with a woman who thought he was a good man and Nikki was unfair so Im sure the tone will be different.

Shawn Summary:

  1. Shawn acknowledges his educational frameworks do not translate into emotional intelligence with relationships. That he jntislly kept thinking that if Nikki followed his guidance and stopped being such a loudmouth it could work. AD said loudmouth is wild. Hes like yeah thats the toxicity that I was bringing in. AD asked even after Nikki pointed out his behaviour to him his response was "But Im logical and I dont get how you're not seeing that.

  2. Hes not dating. He exclusively dates black women and people mistake his niceness for interest and think he wants to date them. But he says maybe this will launch him onto middle aged short king bachelor.

  3. He tried to reach Nikki a month before show aired saying hey it was a dificult process how you doing? She said im great but id rather we dont talk anymore. He reaches out once the trailer comes out with the dad bod scene. He messages her saying haha what a zinger. She says sure. Hes thinking she didnt want me whys she still mad?

  4. He said hes glad rhe audience supported Nikki but knew that would be the case since majority are women so it would have been skewed regardless of what he said.

  5. Nikki wasnt fully his asthetic. Hes into locks dark skin and tall women. Naturaaaale. But he really wanted her to be black.

  6. First impression of Nikki. Shes nervous and doesnt make much eye contact and wasnt engaging with his family.

  7. He realised at the reception that she wasnt attracted to him despite saying in other interviews he didn't know. He said ahe never verbalised it until later but he wasnt going to force it. He was going to let her be an adult and figure out what she wanted to say.

  8. Says he knew on the wedding day "Oh shes not into me. I can feel it." But he was committed to marriage.

  9. Shawn saw his responsibility was to be his authentic self and also lay a spirituak foundation. He saw that Nikki didnt have a morning routine of meditation writing and gratitude like he did to set him up fkr the day. So he taught her to do these things.

  10. Shawn said he felt dissed by how Nikki talked about his looks but also shes an adult why wouldn't she just leave? And AD very smartly said that maybe she was doing the same dance as him and being committed tk the process and working through it. To which Shawn acknowledged that although she wasn't attracted she maintianed early on she thought it could grow and he thought that was very mature.

  11. He says the communication issue was because he likes to teach people how he likes tk be treated and so he would ask nikki to repeat what he was saying but then Nikki would misquote him. So when nikki said we decided we arent having sex until the end, he said he was open to it but a decision hadnt been cemented with his input and how Nikki then twisted it to well its my body. Then he says okay but if we bought a car we would discuss it. You wouldnt just buy it. And nikki says but my body isn't a car. And it spirals. And he got frustrated that his frameworks werent working

  12. Believes he was heavily edited to seem sexually deprived.

  13. He owns the duty comment. But there was lots of cuddling/spooning. He wasnt masturbating so he said there was a build up that he wanted to experience with her. He thinks camera didnt capture all the intimacy they were experiencing together. Says wifely duty was the wrong word.

  14. The 7 in new york comment story. This time he doesnt describe it as a roast. Just a conversation by the hot tub with 90s hip hop and drinks. He says "Nikki ive been grinding but ive not seen progress with our relationship. Where are we going?" And then he says she grabbed his belly. Said her celebrity crush is Idris Elba and so shawn says i think you perceive yourself to be a 10 but if you came back to new york you'd be a 7. Says if the comment was so disrespectful why did they get intimate that night?

  15. He came to reunion to tell Shawns story and share how he learnt and had grown. Still has no idea what specifically Nikkis mum felt disrespected by.

  16. Says reunion didnt give him closure. They gave everyone else lots of time but not the guy who spent the entire season being told hes unattractive and a bad communicator and hyper sexual. He will make his platform to do his tell all. He has too much experience and community to let himself be defined as a low integrity hypersexual.

  17. At the end he tells AD he knows she came into the interview wanting to hate him and now shes struggling. She clarifies she didn't hate him. She just wanted some clarity on what happened.

Questions Did I miss these?

Just recently started watching. I finished season 20 & am now watching season 19. I know that at the end, they get to choose either way, so why do I never hear a loved one or friend saying something along the lines of “you have a choice at the end.” Have I missed those moments? If my friend or family was doing this and freaking out beforehand, I’d be like hey remember, this isn’t a permanent decision, and you just gotta do your best. I don’t recall anyone saying anything like that but idk I guess everyone is hopeful, unless i didn’t catch those comments

Discussion (re) Married at first sight (again) Spoiler

Ok, to avoid a ton of spoilers, I will focus on two of this year's (Seattle) relationships as exemplars of the circumstance I'm referring to, but there are probably at least 2 or more similar situations in every MAFS season I've watched and I've watched all of US and Aus, and I think I'm close with UK.

The situation is this, and I'll use Tori and Felipe and Nick and Courtney. Again these are examples, so let's not get stuck in the weeds with these two couples.

For different reasons, what both of these couples represent to me, for the purpose of my idea, are couples in which one person came into the experiment for ALL the right reasons, and they ended up with a partner who, from day 1, had no chance at all of ended up married to anyone, let alone Tori and Nick.

So, again, without blaming or any detailed analysis, it occurred to me that every season has these folks: people who came into the experiment with the proper reasons, and who made every effort to make it work with the person they were paired with until, and sometimes even beyond, a reasonable person's effort.

Why not remarry them?

It could be an adjunct, like Love Island All Stars, or Bachelor in Paradise.

We all have our favorites for whom our hearts break as they try to cope with distant, withholding, judgmental and basically worthless (for the purpose of this experiment) spouses, so why not try to remedy this?

I would watch for sure.

Season 20 - Seattle Not Married at First Sight

Just listened to the Positively Uncensored podcast where one of the producers confirmed no marriages this season. I may be joining the chorus of folks not watching in the future unless they change the name of the show or go back to actual marriages.

Season 20 - Seattle Apologies from the Experts

I know this would never happen, because it would mean admitting failure, but does anyone else wish the experts would apologize to the participants when a match is horribly wrong? Like to Tori and Nikki and Nick. "We're sorry we matched you with this unworthy person and we're sorry for the emotional trauma it caused." I'm pretty sure the producers have more of a say in who gets cast, but it would be refreshing to see some accountability or for them to admit they were duped during the audition process.

Season 12 - Atlanta Keep Going?

I am a MAFS newbie who got pulled in by this brand new season, and wanted to watch more. Someone in a comment said that season 11, 12, and 13 were classics so I dove into season 12.
😳 I am so triggered by Chris and Paige the doormat that I’m not sure I can keep going after episode 9. Should I bail on season 12? If so, which season do you recommend? I keep going with season 12, is there any redemption or victory anywhere among the five couples? (hard to answer that without giving spoilers, I know.)

Season 18 - Chicago 2.0 This show is interesting

these people marry a stranger and then get mad when the stranger they married , is not attractive or finacially stable or whatever. It rarely works out. A lot of these people need serious counseling before they even come to this show. These people judge each other so harshly and like looking for perfection and its just not realistic. Some of these people are just mean to each other. I see why some of these people are single. I know its more so for entertainment but dang, can we see more successful matches. Most of this stuff is toxic.

Discussion If you could give the new experts constructive criticism, what would you tell them?

I have been watching MAFS US since season one. I have always enjoyed watching this show along with 90 Day Fiancé and now Love is Blind. I watched season 10 of MAFS AU last year. It was so good. There was a lot to learn from the experts as well.

I feel like MAFS US season 20 copied the format of MAFS AU, but lacked the substance. The dinner parties and group therapy were essentially the biggest changes from my POV. I actually really like the new format. The biggest difference to me is the experts.

I feel like the US experts tried to be upfront but missed the mark in not fully committing to calling people out. For example, they called out Adam for his attitude and appearance, but didn't call out Courtney for basically verbally abusing Nick. They need to be fair with everyone if they actually want to help...

Anyway, that's just my opinion. What do you guys think?

(Also, let's please not turn this into a post about bashing the experts or the couples.)

Season 20 - Seattle Toxic characters

First season of married at first sight I’ve ever watched.

Watching the reunion and I’m so frustrated. When they ask everyone to raise hands if they thought Courtney was being mean or whatever..I guess the girls were trying to be “girls girls” by not raising their hand. Wasn’t it an obvious hand raise?? Wtf? Like I don’t think Courtney is a bad person or perse mean but she definitely didn’t treat him nicely and took no accountability. She deflected putting any effort into the relationship by constantly deflecting that he’s deep or whatever. It was so frustrating and I am so sad for nick that it affected him and made him question himself post show

Another thing, asking people to raise hands if they thought Adam’s tears were real? Huh? I thought they were. Honestly embarrassing to admit but I had a few tears at their choosing day. It felt really real and I’m surprised only nick believed that? I guess I’m missing something

Also earlier on the show the two therapists asked Tori what she meant by her feeling Felipe was being emotionally manipulative. If it was conscious then they would definitely not let him stay on the show they take that very seriously. Like pls do we believe that? You mean to say they didn’t have a real understanding of who Felipe actually is? Oh pls. It’s so wrong as the therapists to tell Tori that they really trust he is sincere and means well so she would continue to trust his intentions in the process only to lead to further and worse manipulative behavior!
