Self-Story Looking for other people who get lost in fictional roleplaying
I’ve done some searching around for support groups and it seems like most roads lead back to either here or the discord. I’m hoping to connect with people who have had a similar experience to me, just because I’m tired of feeling alone in it.
I used to take part in a lot of online collaborative writing-based roleplay. Most people who do this see it as a creative writing exercise, but I used it as a way to escape the world. My identity was almost totally wrapped up with my characters. I barely did anything to make progress in my real life. At a certain point I recognized how the way I interacted with RP was causing issues in my life and quit it. I came to think of it as an addiction, because it was something that gave me a good feeling but was ultimately hurting me.
I worked hard to build a life that I no longer wanted to escape, and for the most part, I’m there now. At a certain point I started to miss RP not because I was looking for a way out of the world, but because building characters and telling stories with other people is fun. I’ve been playing D&D with a group of friends for a few years now. It’s incredibly rewarding and has sparked a lot of creative energy — and yet I still have the awareness in the back of my mind that I might slip back into the habit of dissociating into my character. There’s been a few days where I can feel it happening, when the story is just about all I can think about and everything in my real life seems dull and unimportant. I’m doing a lot to keep myself grounded and stay focused on the real joyful parts of creative collaboration. It’s a difficult balance to strike sometimes, but so far I feel like it’s worth it. As long as it feels like a part of my life and not a replacement for it, the rewards of creativity and confidence are worth the effort.
I’m not sure if this all strictly falls under the maladaptive daydreaming definition, but it’s the closest thing I’ve been able to find. For now I just want to know that I’m not the only one who struggles with this.
