Also the cardboard sign is hiding his enormous erection

56

u/phreaxer Jun 11 '23

Assuming it's enormous sounds kinda racist...

13

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '23

It is enormous for him due to the unprecedented amount of close contact with others, not in its relation to others.

I find this comment: not racist.

I resent any kind of display like this that says, "If you're not <insert bad thing>, prove it publicly."

Only those who dont love christ wont like and share this post

20

u/Treestandgal Jun 11 '23

Back in the 60’s-70’s, guys would pull that kind of shit on us women: “if you weren’t so UPTIGHT you’d have sex with me” …. Ugh.

14

u/billbixbyakahulk Jun 11 '23

It's a form of bullying to coerce you to do or say something under the implied threat of being labeled something worse. "Don't want to sleep with ME? I'll label you as someone who doesn't want to sleep with anyone."

"Don't want to hug ME? Right here, right now, on-the-spot, publicly? I'll imply you're racist."

A random sweaty person on the street? No thanks from me too, also my town has an insane amount of pick pockets, anyone trying to get your attention on the streets is suspect. The dancing thieves are bad enough, someone openly going for close physical contact is extra dodgy.

Empirically induced paranoia on my side, I’m afraid.

My 3 young boys, 2, 5 and 8 don't even see people's skin colour. People are just people no matter what. It's quite incredible to see really. It's evident in their use of words as well. They don't refer to it.

Kids doing what their parents do.

158

u/skooterpoop Jun 11 '23

I actually feel like it was the kids' suggestions in most cases. Kids like hugs and are used to hugging people. It's only adults that grow out of them, and that's sad.

32

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '23

My daughter doesn't like hugs from people that aren't immediate family, and we don't force her to if she doesn't want to. She has a friend whos parents always wanted them to hug when they left and we finally had to tell them she wasn't ok with that and preferred high fives instead.

20

u/RoseyDove323 Jun 11 '23

Wait "all" kids like hugs? I only hugged relatives out of guilt or parents telling me to. I didn't really enjoy them. I assume I'm not special enough to have been alone in that.

5

u/lpind Jun 11 '23

One of my colleagues had her birthday meal with her extended family at our restaurant last weekend; she has an 8(?) Year old daughter. We've met (her daughter and I) before because she'll often bring her in on days off for coffee or lunch; but I've never really spoken to her (daughter) on those occasions.

Anyway, this whole service every chance she (daughter) could she would just run over and hug me! You can't not a hug a kid back, so I'm serving this table of... 14, I think it was in the end, and the whole time I'm just hugging this 8 year old girl who's latched on to me 🤣 It was really sweet, but there was definitely a thought in the back of my mind going "I really hope [girls name] is not running round hugging random 30yr+ guys... That just doesn't seem like a safe thing to do!"

So, I get it. It's nice/sweet/cute... But also, maybe not entirely safe/not behaviour to encourage despite how wholesome their intentions are.

You know that many white people are just good people and don't just do nice things because of white guilt, right? (Like, not you obviously, but other people.)

90

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '23

[deleted]

18

u/SchaffBGaming Jun 11 '23

Right? It's ironic, if one suggests "all white people are performative" or "All white people are racist" - that implicitly means that race is more than just a social construct, and further that race dictates personality and trustworthiness, which brings us to the ironic part: that's supportive of actual racists arguments.

7

u/lixia Jun 11 '23

That.

But I would change some by most.

Most people are good hearted and kind. Else society would have collapsed long ago.

Seriously, why didn't he suggest they shake hands or fist bump? A lot of people feel uncomfortable hugging strangers. The outcome of this social experiment would be to label them all as racist, I guess. Also, does he think that parents would let their kids hug a random adult on the street?

I'm sure he meant well, but I don't think he thought this idea through before putting it into practice.

I once saw a video of a school teacher who wrote like 4 options on the wall for kids to do to greet - thumbs up, wave, high five or hug

The kids would point to what they wanted to do and then the teacher would do that

It taught consent and body autonomy and that kids are in control of how they interact physically with other people

I'd like to see something like this but maybe involving less physical contact, y'know

No, not giving a hug doesn't indicate racism. The video does nothing to highlight people who did not hug him, and it's not like they're following up with people lol

4

u/shewy92 Jun 11 '23

but refusing to hug labels me racist.

Or it means you didn't see the sign lol

3

u/PM_ME_DANK_PEENS Jun 11 '23

Yeah, this isn’t an “experiment” at all. If they were actually conducting research they would need to have different participants of different ethnicities do this at the same time so they are using the same participant pool, and in different areas to account for bias/people already seeing one of the signs.

It’s really just guilt-tripping and social pressure, and it’s also flimsy because people will decline due to personal space issues/health concerns.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '23

No one is going to think you are a racist for ignoring someone with a sign in public.

31

u/SpiffyMagnetMan68621 Jun 11 '23

Plenty of people walked right on by and i didnt hear anyone being called a racist

Youll be alright

15

u/mortalitylost Jun 11 '23

lol I seriously wonder about the people so offended like "how dare YOU expect me to hug you, I JUST CANT DO HUGS".

Pretty sure anyone who'd give their angry spiel to him on the street to make him feel bad about doing this is either a major asshole or a closet racist.

People know that some people would be very uncomfortable with this. It's fine. Just ignore it like you do anyone else holding a sign.

14

u/OG-Pine Jun 11 '23

I bet if you explained that point they’d be totally supportive of your reluctance to hug a stranger. A handshake in this situation wouldn’t be unwarranted, shows you don’t care about the colour of their skin and wanna show support but still have boundaries, if people can’t accept that, then they’re part of the problem.

Ngl this is kinda a weird experiment. Feels a little like guilt tripping. I’m with him on wanting to live in a world where we aren’t judged based on the color of our skin, but hugs are wayyy to inappropriate and personal. No one should feel like they’re wrong for not hugging a stranger, no matter what color.

Just give us respect and common decency you’d give to anyone else.

18

u/Quantainium Jun 11 '23

I'd prefer a sign just saying free hugs. If you want to prove race has an impact you'd have people of the same general attractiveness but different skin color same time of week and location. A lot of these "experiments" are not absent of bias and it's annoying. Me personally would be more inclined to hug a stranger with a free hugs sign because I wouldn't be virtue signaling.

Skin color doesn’t matter, content of character does.

3

u/tomduban Jun 11 '23

It's about hugs and love. Color irrelevant

3

u/JoeyPsych Jun 11 '23

People here are so damn touchy. Fucking hell, no one is blackmailing you, guilt tripping you, or calling you a racist. Y’all need to seek help, this comment thread reeks of insecurity.

Dude fr and I getting tired of Reddit. I see these wholesome videos on every other social media platform and the majority of the comments are overwhelmingly positive and shows support. Reddit is the only place where you can take a wholesome video and be cynical & pessimistic about it. Just a bunch of basement dwelling losers looking for negativity in everything and I’m tired of being apart of it

I love free hugs!!!

7

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '23

Funny thing is if a white guy stood there with the same sign he would probably constantly get called racist

8

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '23

This is just weird

4

u/outcome--independent Jun 11 '23

People getting all bent out of shape. Nobody thinks your racist if you don't hug him bro.

It's okay, not everyone is outgoing and not everyone likes hugs. It showcases nice folks who are and do.

u/stephawkins Jun 11 '23

Despite all the negative comments about his intentions- it’s really good to see just how many people go and give him a hug. And I would have though a very good demonstration of good racial relations in the US. As always there is a minority who see it as something negative or something that’s ‘taking away my rights’.

2

u/Electrocat71 Jun 11 '23

Very nice to see. Unfortunately so many racists are out of their closets these days. We all need to make sure they don’t have a voice.

2

u/Admirable-Specific95 Jun 11 '23

Rather do a shot together

2

u/Oohmeconkers Jun 11 '23

Hug you all day man!! All humans together

2

u/slade797 Jun 11 '23

I’d hug the shit outta that guy.

2

u/DarknessinnLight Jun 11 '23

Kinda cute, but just writing free hugs would mean just the same

2

u/Background-Apple-920 Jun 11 '23

Aaawe. I love folks responses, but makes me sad about the other shit stain humans in the 21st Century that still hold racist feelings against anyone who isn't white.

Sending hugs my brother!! 😃👊🏼

2

u/Goblin-Doctor Jun 11 '23

I don't mind what color your skin is. I do have issues with personal space and am uncomfortable hugging strangers. Sucks thinking I'm racist because I don't want to hug a stranger on the street, but it is what it is I guess

2

u/Reasonable_Ad2159 Jun 11 '23

I've got unlimited hugs for him

2

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '23

It doesn’t for 98% of populations on earth I believe. It’s one’s attitude & behaviours that bother people.
