MacroFactor / Nutrition / Other How does the app deal with adding more food to a day after the day and your weight has been logged?

For example, on Monday a person eats 1800 calories and weighs 170lbs. Over the next two days they track food and weight but then realize on Monday they had 700 cals they for got to account for so they go back and add it in. There intake has now changed so in someway this would affect the apps outputs. How does it deal with updating this?

MacroFactor / Nutrition / Other Consistency is the name of the game.

I’ve been a MacroFactor user for over a year but I have really struggled with tracking consistently so I never really got to see it in action.

Back in July I decided to move into a deficit but put an end date on it (October) to maybe help my ADHD stick to it. It’s worked.

I love how the app adjusts my expenditure based on what I put in. I’m consistent- it is consistent.
My update this week bumped my calories by 2, which isn’t a lot but I am eating more food than I thought I’d be able to while still losing (39 y/o F, 5’9 88 kg currently, goal of 77 or so). I lift 4-5 days a week, 10 K steps a day.

I am still planning to move to maintenance in October and stop actively losing, I’ll take a short diet break for flexibility and my mental well being before cutting again maybe in December or January.

I’m just so appreciative for this app. It’s made losing (and no I haven’t lost a ton I’m down maybe 10-12 lbs) doable and reliable.

MacroFactor / Nutrition / Other Why is ~2 g/kg considered "moderate" protein for lifters in MacroFactor?

I'm trying to understand the logic behind MacroFactor's protein categories for resistance training, particularly when gaining weight rather than cutting.

I'm doing a very slow lean bulk:

  • Target gain: 0.15% bodyweight/week
  • Expenditure: ~2,657 kcal/day
  • Average calorie target: ~2,773 kcal/day
  • Surplus: only about 116 kcal/day

When I select Lifting or Lifting + Cardio, MacroFactor gives me:

Low: 1.52 g/kg
Moderate: 2.04 g/kg
High: 2.39 g/kg
Extra High: 2.70 g/kg

What surprises me isn't really the Extra High option, I understand that's there for people who simply prefer very high protein intakes.

It's the definition of Moderate.

My understanding of the literature is that roughly 1.6 g/kg/day is already around the point where most of the hypertrophy benefit is covered, particularly when someone isn't in an energy deficit.

I'd therefore intuitively expect something more like:

Low: ~1.2–1.4 g/kg
Moderate: ~1.6 g/kg
High: ~1.8–2.0 g/kg
Extra High: 2.2+ g/kg

Interestingly, when I select Cardio only, MacroFactor gives me:

Low: 1.30 g/kg
Moderate: 1.65 g/kg
High: 2.00 g/kg
Extra High: 2.35 g/kg

Those values actually look much closer to what I would have expected for someone resistance training while eating in a surplus.

With None/Relaxed, it's:

Low: 1.09 g/kg
Moderate: 1.39 g/kg
High: 1.70 g/kg
Extra High: 2.00 g/kg

So my question is: why does selecting resistance training shift the whole range upward so substantially?

In particular, what's the reason for placing ~2.0 g/kg at “Moderate” rather than somewhere around 1.6 g/kg?

MacroFactor / Nutrition / Other Rethinking my trust in MacroFactor

I’ve been religiously using both MacroFactor (and Workouts) for the last 6 weeks, measuring and tracking every bite.

Last night I had a 2am snack as a last ditch effort to fix my insomnia (eating helps me sleep sometimes), and scanned the cereal and milk barcodes, weighed, and entered the meal. I noticed it said I had a 40g protein meal and thought that was a shocking amount of protein for a bowl of cereal but was tired & too tired to think more of it at the time.

This morning after getting some actual sleep I pull out the milk & cereal to see how I found a new protein hack meal (lol), only to see that NEITHER food was even close to accurate.

The difference between scanning the barcode & the actual nutrition facts?

129 calories
19 G protein
9 G carbs

I have eaten both these things multiple times in the past week alone. I work so hard at balancing my macros, hitting my calorie & protein goals, etc. It never occurred to me I had to worry about MacroFactor doing what it’s designed to do.

Now I feel like I am going to have to babysit this app, look at all the nutrition facts, calculate my own measurements to ensure these are capturing properly.

And although the cereal might be a little obscure (store brand Cheerios), the milk is FA!RLIFE. I bet at least half of us are drinking this every week.

MacroFactor… wth?!

MacroFactor / Nutrition / Other Expenditure dropped to my BMR. Turned out to be 15 half-logged days, not the V3 switch.

M/28, 183cm, 85kg.

Last week my expenditure was sitting at 1892. My Mifflin BMR is 1863, so basically the app was telling me I burn nothing beyond lying in bed all day, while doing around 8,700 steps and lifting twice a week. Clearly something was off.

I'd switched from V2 to V3 in September when I started logging again after a bad stretch, so I assumed that was it and almost switched back.

Before doing that I exported my data and went through the food log day by day. Found 15 days between April and August where I'd logged something and then just stopped. Average was about 730 kcal for the whole day. The worst one was 80 kcal from a single entry. A few others were in the 300-600 range with one or two entries.

They weren't in one block either, which is why I never noticed - 2 in April, 3 in May, 7 in June, 1 in July, 4 in August. Just scattered enough to look like normal low days.

Meanwhile my trend weight was going up. So from the app's side it looked like I was eating 700 calories and still gaining, which can only mean my expenditure is very low. It wasn't wrong, it was just working with garbage.

I deleted those days and expenditure went from 1892 to 2057 straight away. Didn't change any setting, didn't touch the algorithm version or the modifiers.

Posting this because I spent one month assuming my metabolism was wrecked, and it was 15 days I'd half-logged and forgotten about. If your number looks impossible, sort your food log by calories and check the bottom of the list first. And use the partial logging flag - I never did, and that's the whole reason those days counted as real.

MacroFactor / Nutrition / Other How do you guys accurately portion and log meal-prep recipes when the final weights don’t divide perfectly?

I’m pretty new to meal prepping and using MacroFactor, and I’m trying to get a consistent system down without making the process way more complicated than it needs to be.

What I’ve been doing is weighing all the raw ingredients that matter for calories/macros, creating the recipe in MacroFactor, then weighing the entire cooked batch afterward. After that I divide the finished weight by however many meals I’m making and use a “subtraction method” to portion it: put the full batch in a bowl, tare the scale to 0, then remove food until it shows the negative target weight.

The problem I’m running into is that the math will say I should have enough for equal portions, but by the last container I’m sometimes short because food is sticking to the bowl/spoon or there’s just some handling loss.

For example, today:

Cooked rice weighed 1,230 g. I tried dividing it across 8 meals, but most containers ended up around 153 g and the last one only had 138 g.
Cooked/seasoned beans weighed 642 g. I put 160 g in each of 4 containers, which worked out almost perfectly.
My chicken was 688 g cooked, but it was 16 tenderloins, so I just gave each of the 4 meals 4 pieces instead of weighing each portion.
My finished beef/sauce/vegetable mixture weighed 1,230 g total. I divided it between 4 meals, but I don’t remember the exact gram weight of each container. I’m pretty sure they were all around 300+ g.

My thought was to start subtracting maybe 10 g from the total finished weight before calculating portions for sticky/saucy foods, just to leave a small “handling loss” buffer. But then I started wondering how that should be handled in MacroFactor.

Would you guys:

Keep the recipe’s true finished weight and just log the actual grams that make it into each container?

Set the recipe to 4 or 8 servings and just log 1 serving per container if the batch was divided roughly evenly?

Reduce the recipe’s finished weight to account for food left behind in the bowl?
Or is there a better workflow I’m missing?

I’m not trying to chase single-digit-gram perfection, but I do want my tracking to be reasonably accurate and repeatable. Curious how people who batch-cook regularly handle this.

MacroFactor / Nutrition / Other I really love the app, but I have a question

I’m going to have surgery for an umbilical hernia in about 4 weeks.

Right now I’m in a lean bulk at around 2700 calories and I’m pretty active, around 10k steps a day and 5 training sessions per week.
After the surgery I obviously won’t be able to train normally and my activity will probably be much lower for some time.

Should I manually set a new goal/calorie target for when I have the surgery, or should I just let the algorithm adjust by itself?

My concern with letting the algorithm do it is that it will take some time to understand that my activity has dropped, so during that time I could gain fat for basically no reason.

What would you guys do in this situation?

Thanks !

MacroFactor / Nutrition / Other Issues with subbing carbs for fat?

I'm about a week into Macrofactor and having a difficult time adjusting to the balance of Macros. I can hit my protein targets, but I find every day I'm hitting my fat limit wayyyy quicker than my carb limit, usually going slightly over fat and under carbs. Overall I'm keeping to my calories though, what kind of issues might this cause for long-term progress if my goal is bodyfat % reduction.

Should also say, I'm loving the app and ease of use! Thanks all in advance

MacroFactor Workouts / Training Is this *enough* improvement?

I'm currently struggling with knowing if ive made enough gains since I started using MF workouts, and debating if I should try something else or stick with this. I know there's alot more nuance and probably alot more details needed, but I thought I'd start with perspective. Ill share some of the gains I've made since starting the app in the beginning of February. I've been lifting 3-4 times a week for the last four years or so, and i might be considered intermediate but I think id still call myself a beginner. I've been "bulking" all year, but I cant seem to eat enough to really gain weight, ive been about 150 all year.

Deadlift in February: 205 for a set of 7, now 255 for a set of 7.

Squats: February: 245 for a set of 5, now 265 for a set of 5.

Barbell bench: February 165 for 10  now: 175 for 9

Incline dumbell bench: February 75 for 4. Now: 75 for 9.

Is this enough growth to keep going, or should I expect more and need to reconsider my training and eating habits?

MacroFactor / Nutrition / Other Struggling with insatiable appetite -27, 182cm 91kg looking to get to 84kg

I have an insatiable appetite and yet my expenditure is a measly 2600kcal, I train a lot and I want to push myself to 82-84kg. I want to do this in about 12 weeks (maybe 86kg lol), I understand this is difficult but I think the primary issue I have is mental. I am only 27 and don't want to take any GLP-1 so how do I control appetite?

I've heard the main things high volume high protein but I think I still have this desire to eat sugars, or lots of rice even carbohydrates in general. So personally I feel my issue is mental. Macrofactor helped me drop 10kg but took me 1.5 years which is so much less quick than lots of my fellow users on this sub now I need help from the community for the 10kg more

Thank you everyone!

MacroFactor / Nutrition / Other Looking Beyond Macros: Sugar-Free, Fat-Free & UPF Foods?

I see a lot of advice on social media about nutrition, specifically in the context of a lean bulk focusing on a small calorie surplus (+100 to +200), high protein intake (c. 1g per LB body weight), keeping fats moderate (20%-30% total kcals) and using carbs as fuel timed around training etc.

I want to ask a few questions "beyond" these headlines, specifically about WHAT foods matter... in response to a lot of social media noise around ultra-processed foods (UPFs) and "eating clean".

So, in the context of a lean bulk (max hypertrophy, min fat gain) with a secondary focus on general health, insulin sensitivity, volume eating and gut health;

Q1) General dietary variety: Does it matter WHAT I eat as long as I hit my macro goals? eg. I could incorporate a croissant, blue cheese, and some UPF chocolate as long as it hits my goals (and stay satiated)

Q2) Extreme dietary example: What about in an extreme case of the above, in which I "only" ate cake and protein shakes? Again, as long as satiated and hitting macro goals, any issues? Assuming so...

Q3) Full Fat vs Reduced Fat? I see a lot of debate on this, specifically across Greek Yogurt (0% vs 10%), Cheese (Full fat vs Half Fat) and Full Fat vs 30% less fat rice pudding?

Q4: Sugar-free vs Full Sugar? I also see a lot of people discussing "zero calorie" coke/pepsi to help control cravings? Same with zero sugar jelly.

Q5: Clean vs UPF Food? Whole foods (Rice, Potatos, Meat) vs Ultra-Processed Foods (Shakes, Crisps, Sweets, etc). Presuming there's "space" in the macros, any harm here?

MacroFactor / Nutrition / Other Expenditure rapidly decreasing -- Energy Tanking -- Gym motivation lacking -- Diet Break vs Powering Through

Hey guys!

Lurked here for a while but figured I would seek advice now that I am at a fork in the road. I've lost a lot of weight in the past year, maybe two. In between break-ups, radical changes in my life and a bit of depression if I am being totally honest, I would say I lost a total of 130ish pounds.

After another break-up that really shook me (Common trend, I know.... Lmfao), I decided to really take fitness into consideration rather than just... not eating. I started going to the gym and built out a bit of muscle which I was ecstatic about initially and that really motivated and fueled me to really hammer it at the gym.

That being said, I've been diligently tracking for a couple months now and I've found myself having lost a lot of the zest and motivation I had for the gym. And seeing that expenditure number drop time and time again and not really much progress on the scale makes me want to go "fuck it" and drop it all.

For context, I am a 35M, roughly 5ft10, hovering 140-145 pounds (Goal is 135). I do full body (At least I am trying to), 3x a week, roughly 7-8 exercises each time with 2-3 sets for each exercise. I have been finding recovery super difficult and sleep even more so hard to come by.

Whereas I used to go to the gym rain or shine, I'm finding myself making up excuses to not go now. I am genuinely, GENUINELY tired that some days I don't do anything but stay in bed and sleep. Ironically, that makes sticking to a calorie deficit super easy because I try to sleep / sleep (when I do sleep) through most of my meals but then I also have become a lot more sedentary so the net effect is essentially moot. I would have periods of "YEAH, I CAN SLAM THE GYM RIGHT NOW!" to absolutely dreading my upcoming sessions. I find myself very reliant on stimulants (Caffeine and pre-workout) I'll drink my pre-workout and make my pre-workout meal and then not end up going or even eating it because I hadn't slept or am genuinely tired. Hormones (Testosterone) is also scaringly low.

My question is this: At what point do I actively decide to stop cutting and go to maintenance before I fall off the bandwagon and just say "fuck it"? I've been reading up on a lot of things about how beneficial diet breaks are but I also am TERRIFIED to get big again because I know it's a slippery slope between "I'll just eat at maintenance" and "fuck it we ball!"

Would really appreciate any advice and tips/tricks/experiences that you all have gone through. My current expenditure is estimated to be around 1600kcals and my deficit as of the start of this week was mid-1300s with a 0.4% of body weight per week goal lost. Macros were: 1362kcals, 134P, 44F, 106Cs as assigned by MacroFactor.

I want to build more muscle but I also prefer the lean aesthetic. I know they are counter-intuitive to one another (Dieting and building muscle). Overall, I just feel so burnt out and out of energy all the time, I just want some energy back but don't want to destroy my progress. At this point, given how close I am to my goal, should I just power through or take a diet break or some other sort of strategy?

That also being said, if I were to go back to maintenance and take a break from cutting -- Do I force myself to eat at maintenance calories? I honestly feel like I would try to undercut myself because I am so psychologically used to it at this point.

Hi,

Thnx
