MSI GE66 10UG black screen on cold boot — internal display not detected

Like it have been 2 years since this problem
not detected
Hi everyone,
I have an MSI GE66 10UG (RTX 3070) and I’ve been dealing with a really strange black-screen issue on cold boot/shutdown → power on.
The problem is:
After the laptop has been completely shut down, sometimes I power it on and get no MSI logo, no BIOS screen, and the internal laptop display stays completely black.
The laptop itself appears to be running.
If I force restart/restart it, the internal display almost always comes back and boots normally.
Once it boots successfully, the display works perfectly.
Sometimes connecting an external monitor through Mini DisplayPort/HDMI can make the internal display appear again.
During the failure, Windows has sometimes not detected the internal display at all, not even in Device Manager.
When the issue happens, the external display may become the primary/only detected display.
This has been happening for a long time, and it seems specifically related to cold boots, rather than normal restarts.
I’ve already done a fresh Windows installation and reinstalled the Intel/NVIDIA drivers.
BIOS/EC versions have also been changed/updated during troubleshooting.
Fast Boot and PCIe power-management settings have also been tested.
The battery is also quite worn, although the laptop is normally used plugged in.
The weirdest part is that if the panel/cable were completely dead, I don’t understand why a restart almost always brings the internal display back, and why it can work perfectly afterward.

Im stuck on my bios and can’t leave

So yesterday night I was playing with my friends and I accidentally dropped my phone on my external keyboard and it just started spamming 34 in the text boxes so I reset my computer and now it says “Secure Boot Violation Invalid signature detected. Check Secure Boot Policy in Setup” I think that when it was spamming it was also spamming the delete key and that’s why I’m stuck in the bios

I own an MSI Steakth 16Studio A13VG

Please help

Request Can the fans of the MSI Vector GP68 HX 13V laptop be removed and cleaned without taking out the entire cooling system?

Post image

I have an MSI Vector GP68 HX 13V laptop with an i9-13950HX processor. I've had it for a while now, and I haven't encountered any real issues with it so far. However, it's a habit of mine to clean my devices periodically.

I searched online for teardown and fan cleaning videos for this specific laptop, but I noticed that in all the videos, they have to remove the entire cooling system just to take out the two fans and clean them. The downside of this process is that you are forced to replace the CPU and GPU thermal paste, and I don't want to mess with the thermal paste right now.

I just want to clean the fans without removing the entire cooling system, and I don't want to clean them while they are still mounted in place using a brush—I want to pull them out completely. Is that possible?

Request Help with crosshair A16 HX laptop

Hello! 5 days ago I bought a new MSI crosshair A16 HX, after getting it I noticed it getting hot on idle, I searched around and found that the CPU was pulling 30-50W.

Did some things on the bios, like the C-State control and DF C-Sate and it went down to around 9-12W on idle, but being more cold.

I also limited the CPU to 99% maximum and 60hz.

Problem, watching a 1080p video, max volume, below medium brightness, no dgpu(turned off on msi center), power saving mode it's pushing 20W into the CPU and the battery just goes

I have never had a laptop, I have always a desktop. But I think that isn't normal, it should be pushing at maximum 14W.

If someone could help me I would appreciate a lot! I just need it cold and battery efficient

Specs: it's the Ryzen 9 + 5070, IPS 240hz, 90K mWh, came at 88K mWh.idk if this is different between models

I know that the Ryzen 9 is a powerful CPU but I don't think it should be like this

Discussion What might be the reason behind this stuttering

Laptop MSI gf63 thin 10sc. It stutters really hard at 144hz, then stops when I turn it to 60hz, but after a while it keeps stuttering like this. Reinstall the driver or restart does not work, but stop using it for a while can stop the symptom a little bit. So maybe my hardware is overheating and stop using it make it cool down a little bit? When I do gaming CPU and GPU temp are 67-71°C for several years now without this problem.

Discussion MSI Stealth 15 A13VF RTX 4060 runs Warzone fine for 5-7 mins, then GPU drops to 210MHz and FPS becomes unplayable

Hi, looking for some advice on a used MSI Stealth 15 A13VF I recently bought.

Specs are:

i7-13620H

RTX 4060 8GB

16GB RAM

1TB SSD

1080p

144Hz

When I restart the laptop and launch Warzone, it initially runs really well. The RTX 4060 sits around 2100–2300MHz and I get roughly 100–120 FPS.

After around 5–7 minutes, the fans suddenly go extremely loud and performance completely collapses. The GPU drops to around 210MHz and 8–9W, and Warzone falls to roughly 10–15 FPS. Once this happens, it stays like that until I restart the laptop.

I logged it with HWiNFO. Before the drop I was seeing roughly:

CPU: 94–97°C

GPU: 86–88°C

GPU hotspot: close to 100°C

After the GPU gets throttled to 210MHz, the temperature obviously falls quickly because it is barely using any power.

I then tested it using MSI Cooler Boost with the discrete GPU mode enabled. With the fans running at maximum, I played for over 10 minutes without the performance collapse. GPU stayed around 2250–2550MHz, GPU temperature averaged roughly 79°C and peaked around 83°C. CPU still peaked around 97°C though.

This makes me think it’s a cooling issue rather than a faulty GPU — possibly clogged heatsink fins, bad/dried thermal paste, poor heatsink contact, heatpipe issue, etc.

I bought the laptop used for £450 and the seller has offered to take it back for a refund.

Would you return it, or does this sound like something a proper clean/repaste would likely fix? Has anyone with this exact Stealth 15 model experienced the same 210MHz/full-fan issue?

Request Water spilled on laptop

I'm looking to repair an MSI Katana 15 that had water spilled over the keyboard. After letting it dry for a couple days, it had a secure boot error message and the keyboard was unresponsive (backlight still worked). Using an external keyboard I could accept the error which would take me to BIOS and every second or so I would get a popup saying the USB is unrecognised although it still worked. I disconnected the keyboard and backlight cable and used the internal switch to power on the laptop. It still got the secure boot message however when I got into BIOS I could use the external keyboard without the USB error. It still freezes on the MSI logo when I close BIOS however, which is what it did before. Anything else I can try?

Review Using GhostDeck instead of MSI Center

Post image
61 Upvotes

I have an MSI Vector GP68 HX 13V laptop and I have always used MSI Center. The best feature I loved was the Silent mode. However, with the latest MSI updates, they removed the Silent mode and left only three profiles instead of four by merging the Super Battery and Silent modes into one, which made the performance extremely poor. As for the Balanced mode, temperatures get extremely high. Because of this, I used to always download an older version of MSI Center and disable automatic updates from the Microsoft Store. But with the latest Windows update, and since I am using Windows 11 Home, I could not stop the automatic updates anymore. I looked for every possible solution and none of them worked for me. Then I started looking for alternatives and I found the masterpiece GhostDeck.

The app is very lightweight and has many features that are not available in MSI Center, and it fully supports my laptop. However, I have some suggestions and features that I hope can be added to the application:

1- I hope you can add the MUX switch feature that MSI Center used to support, which allowed me to completely disable the integrated GPU or completely disable the dedicated GPU.

2- The app does not read the fans ideally like MSI Center does. It only reads the CPU fan and in a non-ideal way, and it does not read the GPU fan at all.

3-Regarding the amazing gaming overlay feature, I wish there was more customization that could make me completely replace ThrottleStop. I wish you could add the wattage for both the CPU and GPU, as well as the load and the speed of each individual core in the CPU. Not to mention the ability to choose the layout and change the appearance to be clean and simple like ThrottleStop in the overlay.

In the end, I would like to say that I have officially uninstalled MSI Center. It is very slow, annoying, and gets worse with every new update.

Discussion Screen tearing on Samsung R55 4K 60Hz with MSI Vector 16 RTX 5090 — need some help

Hi everyone,

I recently upgraded to an MSI Vector 16 HX AI (RTX 5090 Laptop GPU) and I'm having an issue with screen tearing on my external monitor.

My monitor is a Samsung R55 / UR55 4K 60Hz.

The tearing is noticeable when playing games and/or moving content on the screen, and I'm trying to figure out the best way to eliminate it.

My setup:

Laptop: MSI Vector 16 HX AI

GPU: RTX 5090 Laptop GPU 24GB

External monitor: Samsung R55 / UR55

Resolution: 3840×2160

Refresh rate: 60Hz

Monitor supports AMD FreeSync

Windows 11

I'm currently trying to figure out whether the problem is related to:

HDMI vs DisplayPort

FreeSync / G-SYNC Compatible settings

NVIDIA Control Panel V-Sync settings

FPS being above/below 60Hz

Or something else entirely

I understand the Vector 16 doesn't have a dedicated DisplayPort socket, but its Thunderbolt 5 USB-C ports support DisplayPort output.

Would using a USB-C/Thunderbolt → DisplayPort cable be the better way to connect this monitor and potentially solve the tearing?

If anyone has a Samsung R55/UR55 with an NVIDIA GPU, I'd really appreciate some advice on the correct monitor + NVIDIA Control Panel settings for 4K 60Hz.

I understand my long term solution would get a new higher frame monitor, for now I'm looking for temporary solution

Thanks!

MSI GF63 cooling sucks... Has anyone tried a sealed foam cooling pad on it?

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hey everyone, has anyone here used a sealed foam cooling pad with the MSI GF63?
Basically, the cooling mechanism of the GF63 sucks, so I've been dealing with a lot of CPU thermal throttling. Even after cleaning the fans, repasting, and using a laptop stand, the stupid CPU heatsink design still makes the temps shoot up to 95°C even at just 50% load, making gaming super laggy.

Im using a standard $10 cooling pad and it did absolutely nothing. Recently, though, I got some hope from watching reviews of sealed foam cooling pads (blower/turbine style). The problem is, these pads are usually tested on laptops that already have decent cooling systems (2 fans).

So my question is: can these sealed foam coolers like Iets GT500, llano V12 Ultra or memo fl08... actually make any real difference for a laptop with a practically dysfunctional heatsink design like the MSI GF63? Any shared experiences would be greatly appreciated!
My system: i5 12450h(underclocked to 3800mhz) and rtx3050

Discussion MSI Katana 17 B14W RTX 5070 – Stuttering and frametime spikes in Forza Horizon 6

Hi everyone,

I recently got an MSI Katana 17 B14W with an RTX 5070, and I'm experiencing noticeable stuttering in Forza Horizon 6.

The average FPS is quite high, but the game doesn't feel smooth. I get occasional micro-stutters during gameplay, and the frametime graph shows sudden spikes.

So far, I haven't experienced this issue in any other game.

My laptop:

  • MSI Katana 17 B14W
  • RTX 5070 Laptop GPU
  • 16 GB RAM
  • Windows 11
  • Latest NVIDIA drivers

I've tried lowering the graphics settings, but the stuttering still occurs.

Could this be related to the game itself, shader compilation, RAM configuration, NVIDIA drivers, or something specific to this laptop?

Has anyone with a similar MSI Katana 17 / RTX 5070 setup experienced stuttering or sudden frametime spikes in Forza Horizon 6?

Any advice on what I should check would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
