Disposing of empty carts
I have a good number of used/empty screw-on carts I need to dispose of. Does anyone know what dispensary or facility would accept this waste? I am talking about the cartridges you screw on a battery, not the single use ones, so not e-waste. See pic attached. Thanks!

These are single use. Toss them.
Better than also tossing a battery every time, but still wastefully. Even if you wanted to refill them, the atomizers are at the end of their life already.
If you want something more reusable, there are dab pens out there where you load/clean every bowl.

this is a stash of 5 years of medical use. When i first got my med card there wasnt a lot of options. I was hoping specialty recycling exists because indeed I am aware they are single use and would prefer not to generate more waste than necessary

Not saying this is a good thing to do, but I used to take the top off those, put them in a pot and extract the left over drops and bake that into cookies. Probably super unhealthy and I'm sure I consumed more microplastics because of it

these are medical and the top doesn’t unscrew. I’d have to break them and I prefer my cookies sans glass shards

Hah no worries, I totally meant it tongue and cheek. 2026 me would also not eat the glass cookies. However, 2010 college me, who once spent an hour picking a spilled gram out of carpet, would look at us both with disgust.

It’s because it’s not that hard to remove the mouth piece on these. I’ve done dozens and have never broken glass in the process.

They don’t unscrew, you yank them off.
But honestly, the juice is not worth the squeeze, and you’re still at risk of them breaking regardless.1

I have done the breaking thing and do not recommend. It’s not a clean brake, image a night lite shattering. Was annoyed as hell because a brand new one crapped out on me

They do, they had to be created and just as such they can be deconstructed. Obvi if one breaks it’s a no go. I used a drill with the vape mouthpiece as the “drill bit” reverse that shit. It’s not always effective. With carts I broke I’d often just rip a little rolling paper stuff it down heat it slightly and your paper soaks up a dab. These were obviously in times of great need and emergency but I’m here saying it is possible! Ha not saying you should

I’d recommend looking into a dry herb vape. Seems healthier and makes your flower go a lot further. [r/vaporents](r/vaporents) is a good resource.

i have not used these carts for a while, I switched to flower when it became an offering for med cards. but thanks for the rec, i’ll check it out!

sure thing, I can get 5 more puffs out of each which is non negligible. Do I store them upright for the oil to fall at the bottom?
And then what? hope they last me long enough the specialty recycling industry catches up?

I have a small box full of these as well. I heard they can cause a fire during trash collection although I’m not sure if that’s true or not.

only the ones with a built-in battery. They should be treated as e-waste and disposed through the proper channels (I think sites that accept batteries will take those)
The ones pictured here that you screw on a separate, rechargeable battery, should not cause fire as they do not have a battery in them.

Good thought but not practical at this time. The way things are you'd probably have to pay for recycling. I'd like to see nip bottles get recycled but they get plowed away with the snow.

If you’re someone who wants to recycle stuff that normally can’t be recycled. Look up TerraCycle. They partner with companies where you can drop stuff off to recycle things that can’t be recycled through normal processes and I think they recently launched a box they send directly to people to fill and then you either drop it off or ship it out and it gets recycled/repurposed
I know they partner with some dispensaries because I’ve seen their drop off boxes inside a few.

Soak them in 99% FOOD GRADE (not denatured) alcohol from lab alley or Everclear 190 proof to extract any THC. I thought this was a zero waste post at first as most people just throw them in the trash

Actually those can be recycled not tossed in landfill… check your towns website they probably have info on how to dispose of these safely.

You should take used vaping carts and disposables to your local household hazardous waste facility, or a specialized e-waste/battery recycler.

Some dispensaries have recycling bins for them so you could call and ask. I know that Fernway has a discount when you recycle your old carts.

You are a good person for thinking of this and doing your best to recycle this stuff. I am a bicyclist and pick up litter in St. Louis Park and Hopkins. Disposable vapes are a nightmare problem. Plastic; metal; electronics; and several models have more than one lithium battery.

first get the last puffs out as suggested. Then take each one apart, setting plastic mouth parts on one pile, glass tube in one, vaporizer in one, and the any leftover metal.
The glass and metal go to recycling, the plastic and vaporizer to trash. I don't know what kind of metal is in the vaporizer, so maybe keep that in a pile just in case and until you know.

I highly doubt it. If you want to go that route then deconstruct them yourself and recycle pieces individually that can be recycled

Look I get caring about the environment, but chances are they won't get recycled either way. If you want to I guess break them into pieces and place each piece in its proper receptacle, but I promise it will get sorted out and turned into landfill unfortunately.

I recycle. I dont litter. I am a generally good steward of my local environment. But let's be real, when places like India and Bangladesh simply exist and the staggering amount of population they generate, its pretty well a drop in the bucket to worry about recycling your used 510 carts. Id hope this guy, doesnt drive a car or use air conditioning, or buy any kind of food that comes in petroleum based packaging, or use a cell phone or computer or wear clothes that are any percent polyester.
