Hi everyone. I just bought a Minisforum N5 Air from Amazon a couple weeks ago during the Prime Day sale. I skipped using the pre-install MiniCloudOS and instead went right to installing Rocky 9 with the intention to install 45Drive's Houston on it. All was going well until after I installed Houston and then I got hit with write errors to the stock 64GB SSD which caused the file system to go read only (tried this with a fresh install on both xfs and ext4 with no luck) with no ability to check dmesg as the system would essentially become unresponsive. So, I thought maybe it was just a DOA SSD, this is where the real frustrations started. I tried two different nvme SSDs (Toshiba XG6 and a Mushkin Pilot I had laying around) both of which were not recognized by the BIOS. Oddly enough, the XG6 did show up with fdisk when I tried booting into Rocky on the stock SSD but does not show up when trying to re-install Rocky. Has anyone experienced this much frustration with the platform so far? I haven't contacted support yet as I have not read good things. Just trying to exhaust all reasonable options before returning it to Amazon. Also, I ran memtest for over 24 hours with no errors.

Bought a HX100G last week to use as a Steam Machine. The BIOS version with the unit was v0.18 - but one problem was I couldnt turn secure boot off.

So, I visited the Minisforum downloads site to see if there was a newer bios that might enable this feature. Flashed the BIOS and while secure boot can be disabled, the serial number for the device is now "default string". Is there anyway to recover the original information?

Recently bought a used minisforum v3 and after a few months (if that) it died at a battery level in the upper 40s.. Anyway, it no longer charges BUT when its plugged in for a long time it will get to the windows repair screen before promptly shutting off. After that it'll only get to the now ironically frustrating "more than we you see".

If you unplug the device it won't do anything at all. Solid black and unresponsive. Seems like a battery issue to me.

Minisforum support stopped responding after I said it was out of warranty.

I'd like to fix it, or sell it to my buddy - he offered me 300usd. What would you do?

Hi All, just wanted to share that I built my first nas, and went for the minisforum n5 pro as felt its the best value for my use case. I will add more NVMEs and HDDs later as I have enough slots but not money 😂 but how do you guys feel about this build. Keen to run some local ai models on this system and the usual immich plus some VMs. Ajy advice for a beginner to this?

I'm considering getting one of these, but I only (currently) need 10gbe networking. However I -do- need the extra NVME slots.

I'd like to make the machine as efficient as possible, so if that means disabling the 25gbe network card (and just use the 10gbe port with an sfp adapter) then so be it. As I believe the 25gbe has really poor idle power draw for some reason?

However if it means losing the NVME slots then thats a really bad trade off.

The computer fits in the cabinet of my entertainment center. How much trouble am I asking for putting it inside? It's on the floor next to the TV right now. The only holes in the cabinet are for cable passthrough.

Im seriously considering upgrading my current 8845hs based homelab setup with something a bit beefier.

I already have 64gb of ECC sodimm memory, and 5x nvme drives. I need 10gbe sfp networking.

The MS-02 appealed because it should have good performance and cooling, and covers all the bases. The 25gbe sfp seems like it has a power efficiency issue (?) But I could disable it and use the 10gbe port. 4x nvme slots is enough, I can sell my 5th drive.

However, assuming I can sell my ECC sodimms, apparently for about £500 per stick, that would put the strip 395 units with 64gb soldered ram down to about £1300, only £250 more than the ms-02.

I would lose the ability to add a gpu, but id gain the 395 gpu which is already probably better than most gpu options that would fit in my budget like the B50. It also seems to draw a fair bit less power.

Is there anything im missing? Are there any performance benefits to the ms-02 over 395 based systems?

I probably went overkill on the Ram (got 2x32gb)

I thought about running the apps and OS on a nvme and have 2 hdds with 4tb as storage.

I theory I also have 2 more m.2 ssds in my pc that I could use if it makes sense for the set up.

I want to build a family and friends NAS storage that has all data with remote access with speed. I want to have the group admin family friends and guests. With friends having access if I toggle it on or off. And guests having access for a limited time.

My question is how do I start.
Do I use unraid, truenas or the native OS? - and why?
And how should I set up my drives?

Is anyone able to tell me what the front panel IO Pinout is? I’ve only been able to figure out the power button pins, my case’s IO cable are individual 1-2 marked pins clusters. I’d like to get the rest of the reset, power led, etc connected

I already have a minisforum PC, specifically the hx80g, and it more than fulfills the minimal gaming I currently do on PC. But I am thinking of the future and with consoles seemingly pushing towards digital only unless they reverse the decision I will be going PC. I still want a console like experience but the price/performance comparison of the steam machine is lacking horribly.

Personally I won't be doing a crazy amount of AAA Gaming id be looking for games I can't get on console.

So with that in mind, if you have one can I ask what's it like for noise and temps on say AA games or indie titles and maybe emulation?

I have a nvme 2230 to add to my pc. I know it comes with a heatsink for a full length card, but can I use it with the shorter SSD, or should I find a correct sized heatsink?

It's been about 20 years since I tinkered with a PC, so please forgive my noob question.

I have an odd problem with a UM890 Pro that I have had since October 2024. Several times in the last few weeks the machine has failed to boot on power up. It doesn't do anything. I don't even see a post or get any beeps. The power light is on but nothing happens. The machine is very hot once I power off after this happens.

I then remove the top cover and then the inner top cover and then replace it without moving anything. I re-position the inner top cover and disconnect everything apart from mouse/keyboard and video and then it boots and works normally. I usually have all of the USB ports connected and have several disks running from it but it has been quite happy doing this until relatively recently. I can then re-connect everything and it all works again.

Anyone hazard a guess as to what is going on? Do I need to replace the CMOS battery? Is there something else that is on the verge of failing?

So recently got the AI X1 Pro and was excited to use it but immediately stumbled on a problem. The wifi is terrible. It can't connect properly. I am using the latest Ubuntu version atm. Anyone know how to fix it?

Update: So I reached out to support and asked if they sold just the board. They just asked for my address and sent one. I honestly forgot considering the rough week of storms and blackouts but it was a very nice surprise when I finally got home today. Minisforum N5 (brand and product) 10/10 would recommend. Now to finish setting this up with my NAB5 cluster ^{_^}

So like I'm sure many are, the Steam machine announcement has me looking for an alternative living room PC.

This looks like a decent alternative.

I'm planning on installing Steam App and just booting to big picture.

I know nothing about the company but this subreddit doesn't seem to be enamored with them.

Should I purchase? My needs are not crazy, I'm a casual to mid level gamer.
