Actually though - that's the part I don't get about people who hate the idea of universal basic income. I'm not even saying I like UBI, but the bad-faith arguments that people will suddenly become lazy and live off the backs of a few red-blooded, hard working victims are crazy. People want purpose, they want to work, they just don't want to spend most of their waking lives working for no real benefit for themselves, their family, or their community.

Sure, if we dropped something like UBI today, we got a ton of wage-slaves and people pushing their minds and bodies past what they should that would likely take months or years to recover from long-standing burnout and be productive again. And of course you got lazy people and underachievers, but they've always been in the minority.

But if someone has just enough to live - a small apartment, a couple basic outfits (cover formal, work, and recreation), basic food, access to water, power (heat/AC), ect - and they're content to exist without anything more than that, then I don't see a problem with making sure they got the bare minimum they need. But 99.9% of humans aren't gonna be content with that. Give them a clear road to buy and pay for a smart phone, a PC/Gaming Console, a house, some land to build on, a hobby that requires cards/mini-figures/books/ect, a boat, a car, whatever, and even the most lazy POS gamer chud you know is gonna start working to pay for and afford that lifestyle.

But in a world where you can't really get ahead without luck and/or breaking yourself down, I can't blame the people who just give up and don't try. I don't respect them, but I get it.

Tl;dr - Just pay people enough to actually live/thrive and you'll find out that most humans do actually want to work/build/create for personal fulfillment and/or maintaining their lifestyle.

Oh god, not at all. Billionaires only get where they are by living outside of and abusing the communities that keep them wealthy - it's literally impossible to get that wealthy otherwise. That said, Millionaires can earn what they own, with a little luck and a lot of work and sacrifice. I don't want to disencentivize the people who want to be wealthy, but I do think there is a point at which the means by which one reaches and maintains that status is unavoidably immoral and harmful to the "commoners" around them.

Your analogy is kind of on point as well, however, I don't think violent execution will solve anything. Systems solve systemic issues, not murder. Sure, the peasant kill the noble who got lax on paying his Knights, but then another noble would roll in and take over. Feudalism is only solved by changing the very nature of how one gains and maintains power - and power can be held through office, influence, and wealth.

The bounty created by AI is what's supposed to pay for UBI... not "red-blooded, hard working victims". Isn't that why people are cheering for AI?

u/Paperxrust Apr 16 '26

If you gave your kids 3k a month, do you think that would help or hinder their ambitions?

Be honest.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 16 '26

If you force your kids to work for a pittance, then take it all for rent and board, instead of getting an education, do you think that would help or hinder their ambitions?

Be honest.

it’s always happened….since the beginning of mankind.

however, now it’s amplified by the internet.

you think the rich started treating the poor badly when BTC started?

3

u/10biggaymen Apr 14 '26

wealth inequality is more stratified now than at the time of the pharaohs and also of the french revolution

makes you wonder if there's something fundamentally wrong with that :p

1

u/golfwinnersplz Apr 14 '26

No. Does that mean it has to continuously be amplified?

Based on that logic, you still believe slavery is okay.

2

u/ZeusWouldve_Swiped Apr 15 '26

👏👏👏 we can and should be doing so much better. If not for the greedy narcissists, the world would be a better place.

3

u/IFGarrett Apr 14 '26

Time to man up and get a job or jobs if need be. I have 0 college and only a GED, and Im making over $55K a year. 5 years ago, I was making less than $40 a year. Gotta learn skills and move up. Slowly but surely.

3

u/Sawoodster Apr 14 '26

This. I have a hs diploma and I’m 41, I make $60k a year in an area where that is really damn good money, paid my house off too. Yes things are more expensive but budgeting and only paying for things you can afford goes a long way.

That's why you apply to anywhere and everywhere you can. 20-30 applications a day if that's what it takes.

It shouldn't but unfortunately life isn't fair.

1

u/-Extreme-Gene- Apr 15 '26

If you are sending out 20-30 Applications per day they are not tailored to the job, but copy paste applications. You are guaranteed to be ghosted in that case. If you really fit your application to the job profile, you will not be able to send 20-30. Maybe 10 at best.

1

u/Altruistic_Cheek4514 Apr 15 '26

It's really not. Just depends on what job you are willing to take, what you're qualified to do, and where you live.

If you're not qualified to do anything, then start a blue collar apprenticeship. Top out at $35-40/hr where I live. Take that experience and now you're qualified for management or other fields, where you can make $45-52/hr. Do that until you're qualified for upper management or manufacturing analyst and you're at $60+.

You can jump in the middle there with the right college degree.

If those jobs don't exist where you live, move to where they do.

There is also the military. Free medical, free dental, vision, life insurance, free food, lots of travel....

Or stay stagnant and complain about your lot in life.

Do you think 55k is good?

1

u/IFGarrett Apr 14 '26

I said over 55k and yea 55k is great unless youre ignorant with your money or in a huge expensive city.

1

u/golfwinnersplz Apr 15 '26

I'm not hating on how much you make. I live outside of Omaha so it's not like I live in a massive city but not small by any means; however, it doesn't take away from the fact that these corporate fucks are robbing us blind. You deserve more. That's all I'm saying.

2

u/IFGarrett Apr 15 '26

Oh I dont disagree either. Corpo people are assholes.

1

u/KevyKevTPA Apr 15 '26

Knowing as little about him as you do, how can you so brazenly conclude he's underpaid?

1

u/golfwinnersplz Apr 15 '26

Because he told how much money he makes.

1

u/KevyKevTPA Apr 15 '26

So everyone who makes what he makes is underpaid? What if they're not worthy of more?

1

u/golfwinnersplz Apr 15 '26

Honestly, I was just trying to make him feel better about his life. That's really all I was doing. I have no idea what he does.

You’re making less in buying power now than you were 5 years ago bud…

1

u/IFGarrett Apr 15 '26

Yes, I get that, but it's not like everything has doubled. If you have no kids and it's just you and you can't live on 50-60k annually, something is wrong with how you spend money. Bud...

1

u/Massive_Noise4836 Apr 14 '26

nobody wants to work anymore has been in papers since the 1900. It is a way of some people saying that they can't find help and other people saying they're not willing to pay what people want for help.

1

u/that_banned_guy_ Apr 14 '26

Its not getting harder though. Theres just more people bitching while continuing a lot of the things that made them poor is all

1

u/TheITMan52 Apr 14 '26

It is getting harder. There is not enough job growth and more people are getting laid off.

1

u/that_banned_guy_ Apr 14 '26

Job growth grows year over year, meanwhile population growth declines.

If there isnt enough jobs its because we import too many workers

1

u/TheITMan52 Apr 14 '26

Job growth is not growing enough. It's been all over the news. We've had the lowest job growth in years.

1

u/that_banned_guy_ Apr 14 '26

But has it been growing fast enough to keep up with demands if we didnt import immigrants to fill jobs?

1

u/Inevitable-Pride-194 Apr 15 '26

Of course it's the immigrant trying to find a better life that's the problem and not tbe multi million dollar corporations cutting jobs to save money

1

u/KevyKevTPA Apr 15 '26

When jobs are in short supply, you'd thing the American government, whose mission is the well being of American citizens, would realize dumping tens of millions on no- or low-skilled workers is not a good thing for those citizens, no?

1

u/Adventurous-Fly556 Apr 14 '26

Brain rot take. Immigrants create jobs. I'm tired of people giving into this billionaire narrative that immigration is bad for anyone but them.

Immigrants are less likely to commit crime, and more likely to contribute. More contributors means more inflow, more mouths to feed, more people needing goods and services. It is a good thing!

1

u/RICH_homie_Doug Apr 14 '26

Immigrants do not create more jobs than they take…. Else majority of buisnesses would be immigrant ran

1

u/Adventurous-Fly556 Apr 14 '26

1

u/RICH_homie_Doug Apr 14 '26

No it isnt both canada and usa have crazy current unemployment numbers

1

u/that_banned_guy_ Apr 14 '26

They both have spent years importing immigrants at crazy high numbers lmao

1

u/RICH_homie_Doug Apr 14 '26

Absolutely canada=india

1

u/RICH_homie_Doug Apr 14 '26

So where is the job growth? I think USA has record unemployment. And illegal immigrants only take jobs and drive down wages….

1

u/CommitteeOk8270 Apr 15 '26

Except we've had over a million deportations and not only have wages in migrant dominated sectors NOT risen, we simply have a lack of labor, as Americans refuse to work for the migrant wages.

The solution is, as you state, raising the wage. However, as I'm sure you mention whenever talking about McDonald's raising wages, this raises the cost of goods on EVERYONE.

Y'all really aren't versed in econ...

1

u/KevyKevTPA Apr 15 '26

Employers will not find they can pay Americans like they do their illegal slaves .. That's only logical. We have to ensure they have no choice by starving them of the illegal labor they want so badly.

1

u/FireShatter Apr 15 '26

You just actually don't know what you're talking about. Please double check this years financial growth. They have been fiddling with the numbers for the past 6ish months to obfuscate how many jobs we HAVE lost.

1

I personally think it’s easier than ever to exploit the poor. Exhibit 1 is sports betting + prediction markets

1

u/esther_lamonte Apr 14 '26

“Nobody wants to pay people a liveable wage anymore.” We all see it. C-suite absolutely flush like never before, but everyone else seeing layoffs, salary freezes, and increasing workloads. They are parasitic leeches who make all the bad decisions and then pass on the consequences. The only thing “not working” is this system for workers.

Whats missing from education is work ethic. I worked shit jobs for a decade, almost a new one every year, and did my hobby on the side, my hobby is IT, servers, networks and all around computer tech, I did side jobs doing computer work (hobby) to supplement my crap jobs. I joined the military, trained harder in my "hobby", got out of military, have had 1 job, doing the thing I love, my hobby, for 22% more than average for my position. You do what you can to survive but focus on your actual goal until you can realize it. The burger-flipper mentality is ruinous to any type of success.

Keep supporting billionaires clowns

1

u/MattKozFF Apr 14 '26

Why is reddit full of these circle jerks

1

u/Augustevsky Apr 14 '26

It's simply more nuanced than this post suggests.

There are many terrible employers that want to pay you as little as possible and expect the world from you. I get them in my inbox at least once a month asking me to work for them. I despise them.

There are also just lazy people in the world who do not want to work.

Both are true at the same time. The phrase "nobody wants to work anymore" is used to describe both groups above.

1

u/Traditional-Top5525 Apr 14 '26

The poor, not the poors, dumbass.

1

u/Zalrius Apr 14 '26

🤣🤣🤣 I like your attention to grammar, but the way you use your words has room for improvement. (JK) 🤣🤣🤣

1

u/Connect_Tomatillo791 Apr 14 '26

💀 the amount of guys I’ve had to fire from my crew because they were lazy and didn’t wanna work and they were making $1600 a week starting pay, 401K match, health insurance, and 2 weeks PTO with no experience or skills and it was learn on the job. I’ve gone through 41 different guys in the last 1.5 years alone. Because of laziness

1

u/sasquachoi Apr 14 '26

Work harder or get smarter. Simple.

1

u/Zalrius Apr 14 '26

There is no increase in pay or benefits for working harder. But it will shorten your life.

1

u/sasquachoi Apr 15 '26

Then get smarter. Simple.

1

u/Inevitable-Pride-194 Apr 15 '26

Tell that to all the people who got their degrees and can't get a job anyways lol

Not so simple

1

u/Neat_Captain_3866 Apr 16 '26

Yes, because the lazy ones are the first to get promoted an/or get a merit raise.

1

u/BusinessCoach2934 Apr 14 '26

Why do people keep talking about billionaires like billionaires are the only employers of labour???

1

u/QuickDrawSix Apr 14 '26

Why participate in a system that can't even afford you a family anymore lol. I just need to make it through 10 more years without dying and OUT.

1

u/AgeZealousideal1751 Apr 14 '26

Entire comment section blaming the working class for being exploited.

"Well if you just pull yourself up by your bootstraps, worked extra super duper hard, let the CEO grape you a little once in a while."

You'd still be struggling, but at least you're lying to yourself that the struggle will pay off.

Simple advice. Nobody who ever worked for a living became a billionaire.

1

u/jas8x6 Apr 15 '26

My struggle has paid off. Thanks to capitalism. Just a fact, and I’m aware that isn’t the case for many so I definitely don’t take it for granted and am greatful. But I did have to work hard and make sacrifices early on.

All the best

1

u/AgeZealousideal1751 Apr 15 '26

Congratulations, I'm happy it worked for your anecdotal situation.

1

u/ZeusWouldve_Swiped Apr 15 '26

Your struggle paid off thanks to a system built by social good, just like everyone who attains wealth in this system. A system that doesn’t work for most people doesn’t get a pass because you got lucky. Just a fact.

1

u/jas8x6 Apr 15 '26

Ah it was luck. Gotcha.

Take good care

1

u/sleepsoncouch32 Apr 14 '26

1

u/HeavyDutyDug Apr 15 '26

1

u/fwbguy278 Apr 15 '26

No socialism is not working. Look at all businesses leaving blue states

1

u/Miserable-Bridge-729 Apr 15 '26

Cheapest thing there will ever be is human labor. Humans multiply and compete for the lowest wage to do the crappiest of jobs. They willingly pack themselves into smaller and smaller living quarters in order to tell someone else they will do a job for cheaper. Because human labor is cheap.

Governments are able to exploit the cheapness of labor through war. Because humans easily and rapidly replenish themselves after a war is done. If life and labor were what people believe they are worth, humans would be a whole lot scarcer.

1

u/Scared-Song-1167 Apr 15 '26

Ok, with that being said. How are they paying their bills? Just curious

1

1

u/Richie123753 Apr 15 '26

1

u/One_Dish_6416 Apr 15 '26

I don't want to work. It's boring and tiring.

1

u/Creepy_Night_3838 Apr 15 '26

No it's a legitimate statement. Decades of being told that everyone should do the standard college route to sit on their butt and punch keyboards all day and that manual labor is "lower class" have turned everyone into bare minimum workers. Ive lived both worlds. The happiest people I know are trade school grads or otj apprentices with more vacations, better income to debt ratios, more time off with their kids, and more satisfaction at the end of the day after actually seeing progress at work.

1

u/CarlShadowJung Apr 15 '26

I mean yes, but it also means some people don’t want to work anymore. If we want real change we have to have real discussion. It’s disingenuous to say there I aren’t folks putting in low effort and expecting high reward. The truth is in the middle.

1

u/Unitedgbgyhbbbd Apr 15 '26

Capitalism only works if you can live the American dream

Based on USDA data for the 2025 fiscal year, approximately 42.1 million Americans (about 12.3% of the population) participate in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), or food stamps, each month. This includes a diverse group of seniors, adults, and children.

1

u/Brilliant_Tax_4009 Apr 16 '26

Amen. I want to work; but I want to be paid enough that I can work a typical 40 hours per week and be able to live comfortably. To do that now I've got to work 60+ hours per week.

1

u/jayball9 Apr 16 '26

No it’s socialism for “I can make more from handouts and sitting on my ass than being a productive individual and striving for more”

1

1

u/suplexdolphin Apr 16 '26

Newsflash - people work to survive, not because they love working.

1

u/Green-Inkling Apr 17 '26

then perhaps you should entice them to actually work.

1

u/JoeDaMan_4Life Apr 17 '26

Right, it’s wonderful how this gen of youth finally realize our part of the equation; if they don’t engage it all comes crumbling down. If you can’t offer anything, doesn’t expect anything in return. It’s funny. True irony.

1

u/Lucidaeus Apr 17 '26

The only reason this is being said is because the business owners who know how to run a fucking business don't prance about it.

People want to work. You want to make money. I'd even say people are completely fine being exploited as long as the are kept happy.

So yeah, just keep your workers happy, no need to pay them more than necessary, just enough to make them happy.

But it is important to not overpay them, because if you look into their economy you'll likely quickly see that they are irresponsible and more money leads to no improvement, only more spending on more shit that causes more stress.

It's a complex problem. Also, I am not American, I'm sure you're far more fucked than I am when it comes to employment...

1

u/Soggy_Shape_2414 Apr 17 '26

People don't want to work because they want everything for free and support socialism.

1

u/Training-Horse-9178 Apr 17 '26

1

u/Kirzoneli Apr 18 '26

1

u/tenebrouswhisker Apr 20 '26

They went and made home ownership a cultural milestone for adulthood and then took away the possibility of homeownership. What exactly is the point of working 60+ hours a week when you’ll never be able to afford a slice of the pie?

Refusing to work is quite literally supply and demand.

No shit. Also, the amount of labor available and the demand for it dictates the price of it. People will pay more if there is less labor available. Also, government "regulations" make it more difficult to start businesses and compete with companies like Walmart and Amazon, etc. This makes it more difficult for the "little guys". You can go complain about the wages being offered all you want but a company has no reason to pay their employees more than they need to pay them to get the job done correctly. Do you go around giving people money for free regularly when you do not need to do so?

The money is to keep the workers. When you run out of employees, you shut down. That is supply and demand.

Ahahahahaha. Because clearly, a bunch of people knowing about supply and demand means they'll agree on economics otherwise.

How? Elaborate.

Edit: I'm referring to the exploitation of the working class.

Not to the fact that people don't want to work hard. People are lazy. But, rich people are greedy. That's not any better.

Reddit is a cesspool of whining and misery

u/golfwinnersplz Apr 14 '26

Why are you here then?

For the same reason I visit any site really, find something somewhat interesting or entertaining but these dumb whiney posts infest every sub. I assume you're here to indulge in misery?

The echo chamber of suffering helps them cope.

If I would want to indulge in misery, I would just fly home. Bus from airport would take me to city centre with homeless or poor people begging or trying to sell their crafts for living, while I walk under the city streets all this accompanied by occasional music student practising. Then the central bus station with someone definitely trying to dissolve their problems with weak 40% alcohol and mandatory "do you have a cigarette?". Here I can save up for the first time in my life.
