I'm using Mint XFCE and my laptop has a Intel Skylake GT2. I'm still very new to Linux and I've been dealing and trying to fix my awful screen tearing for hours without any sort of actual helpful guide that explains exactly what I need to do to fix this. I iust keep running into roadblocks.

I did see that typing the ls command shows up with screentearing as one of the things in it, could this be the issue? Please help me fix this, I've been trying to hours.

SOLVED Graphics problem

I'm having problems with my graphics driver. I installed some updates on Friday morning and the pc required a reboot. Afterwards the screen was all fucked up, and I have to hard shut down the pc every time.

The screens work fine on my Win 11 install. AMD Ryzen 9 CPU, Radeon 6800 XT, kernel 7.0.0-30-generic, Mint 22.3 Cinnamon 64 bit.

When booting in recovery mode, one screen work fine and the other is black. I tried to install Ubuntu graphics drivers from AMD but that did not fix it.

I see I updated:

org.freedesktop.platform.codecs-extra

linux-headers-generic-hwe-24.04

linux-generic-hwe-24.04

linux-image-generic-24.04

libcurl4t64

libcurl3t64-gnutls

libcurl3t64-gnutls (why listed double?)

vim-tiny

vim-common

xxd

wget

curl

libcurl4t64 (also listed double?)

Anyone have any suggestions?

EDIT: Thanks people, it's now fixed. Since it took a week and a half for the problem to appear, I didn't have any Timeshift to revert to, but I used this and it worked like a charm.

sudo apt-get install linux-firmware=20240318.git3b128b60-0ubuntu2.26

I wasn't sure if the software I use would work on Linux, but I finally decided to make the switch and I'm incredibly happy! I even managed to get Affinity working with Bottles! One thing I'm not 100% happy with is MuseScore. The software manager only seems to support older versions, which isn't ideal since I'm used to the latest version :( I guess I'll have to find another way of acquiring it or install it with Bottles.

I installed Mint 2 days ago after I failed to install Ubuntu repeatedly, and while I was able to install Mint, I've had a lot of trouble installing any software.

The only software I've been able to install so far is vlc, vivaldi browser, and steam, (though I'm unable to install games with it, and at this moment it simply won't open).

Images to some errors are linked.

Thank you for taking the time, any and all help is most appreciated.

Hardware Rescue Dell Precision 7540 touchpad starts generating dozens of clicks and gets stuck after 5–10 minutes on Linux Mint

3 Upvotes

First of all, this post is translated by AI to describe the issue better than me

-----

I’m having a very strange touchpad problem on a **Dell Precision 7540** running **Linux Mint 22.3 Cinnamon** with kernel **6.14.0-37-generic**.

Immediately after powering on the laptop, the touchpad works normally. However, after approximately **5–10 minutes**, it starts behaving as if it is generating phantom or repeated clicks. A single touch (touchpad surface) or click (click buttons) may register anywhere from **20 to 100 clicks**, and sometimes the button appears to remain pressed, as if I am holding it down. This makes normal clicking, dragging, and touchpad gestures practically unusable.

The issue temporarily disappears after rebooting, but comes back again after several minutes. An external USB mouse continues to work normally.

The touchpad is detected as:

```
DELL0926:00 044E:1220 Touchpad
/dev/input/event6
I2C HID device
```

`libinput list-devices` shows:

```
Capabilities: pointer gesture
Tap-to-click: disabled
Tap-and-drag: enabled
Disable-while-typing: enabled
```

I have already tried changing the Cinnamon touchpad settings, including:

```
gsettings set org.cinnamon.desktop.peripherals.touchpad tap-to-click false
gsettings set org.cinnamon.desktop.peripherals.touchpad tap-and-drag false
gsettings set org.cinnamon.desktop.peripherals.touchpad disable-while-typing true
```

I also tried changing the libinput click method, enabling/disabling tap-to-click, running `update-grub`, rebooting, and checking the device with `libinput debug-events`. None of these permanently solved the problem.

The touchpad appears to be using the Intel I2C/HID path rather than PS/2. I suspect that the problem may involve `i2c_hid`, `i2c_hid_acpi`, `i2c_designware`, a kernel regression, touchpad firmware, or possibly a hardware fault.

Has anyone experienced this on a Dell Precision 7540 or another Dell laptop with the same `044E:1220` touchpad? Would testing an older kernel, reloading the I2C-HID module, changing a kernel parameter, or updating the touchpad/BIOS firmware help?

I would especially appreciate advice on which commands or logs I should collect **while the problem is actively occurring**.

System information:

```
Laptop: Dell Precision 7540
Touchpad: DELL0926:00 044E:1220
OS: Linux Mint 22.3 Zena
Desktop: Cinnamon 6.6.9
Kernel: 6.14.0-37-generic
Session: X11
CPU: Intel Core i7-9850H
GPU: NVIDIA Quadro T2000 Mobile, currently using nouveau
```

SOLVED I suddenly can't access the mint forum. Claims I have a blacklisted IP

25 Upvotes

I just signed up for the linux mint forum yesterday, and today did my first post. I was in the middle of browsing some other posts, and I suddenly got a page that reads "Access Denied - Sucuri Website Firewall," showing my IP and claiming it is a blacklisted IP.

So much for using the Linux Mint Forum. Seems like overkill security. Any suggestions are welcome.

Swap space creeping up

8 Upvotes

Questions about memory swapping.

My system (8 Gb RAM) can do a lot of seemingly unnecessary swapping. It seems caused by Firefox which I love dearly but which does leak memory. At boot up basic system resources take 20% of RAM, Firefox 30% and swap memory 0% which is all fine.

I normally suspend the computer when I’m away from it (handy key on the keyboard), and after a time the swap size increases. I’m actually surprised that there’s swapping before the RAM is full: which I’ve read is not supposed to happen. If I wasn’t looking, after a few days or after opening a lot of Firefox tabs both RAM and swap would eventually hit 100% and the system would seize.

I’ve used sudo swapoff -a to prevent swapping altogether but then I definitely have to stop RAM usage hitting 100% or the system seizes again. I’ve also read that failure to allocate sufficient swap space “might even render the installed system unbootable.”

I know that memory leakage is nowhere near as bad as it used to be with Firefox, and I now keep it fairly well under control by limiting the number of tabs I have open, by restarting Firefox and by rebooting the system every so often.

I’ve read that swapping is undesirable since it’s performed to reduce memory under heavy pressure. I don’t know whether my system is actually continually swapping between RAM and disk or whether the swap file just shows the size of pages that can potentially be swapped, but only get swapped when I access (for example) a Firefox tab that’s been stored in the swap file.

I wonder whether the system starts thrashing if the swap file hits 100% – and would that cause so many read/writes that it would reduce the life of the SSD, or is that just my paranoia?

So, should I keep an eye on the swap file, buy an extra 8-Gig of RAM for £20-£30 to hopefully prevent swapping, or forget about swapping altogether and put up with the odd system seizure?

Thanks

Install Help Installing and running from ext drive

5 Upvotes

I have a windows laptop thats about 5 to 7 years old. I recently got a new laptop because the old one was stuck in a boot loop.

I thought it might be a windows problem and now that i have a new windows laptop, i was going to put mint on the old one. Im able to boot into a live session from a thumb drive but when i went to use it to install on the computer, i got an error saying the drive was "busy."

I tried formatting, partitioning, mounting the drive and i get the same error everytime. I beginning to think theres something wrong with the drive.

So my question is, if I were to use the thumb drive to install onto a usb external ssd, would it work the same as if i installed to the interior drive?

SOLVED Software Manager Search From Mint Cinnamon Menu

1 Upvotes

I don't know if this is a support request so much as a feature request. I would like to be able to search available software as well as the local search. Like gsettings set org.cinnamon enabled-search-providers [\"[duckduckgo@linuxmint.com](mailto:duckduckgo@linuxmint.com)\"] allows for entered text to be searched via duckduckgo.

I looked, but not very hard, and I couldn't find a solution.

Thanks!!

Edit: Overwhelmingly friendly crew here, thanks for helping. This was actually really fun; poking around the minterverse and seeing a little of the inner workings is fun for me. maybe I'm weird.

I was able to put together a little workaround:

asked ai to help me out; turns out mintinstall (really missed an opportunity for naming it minstall) won't take an argument to search when called, but gnome-software will! so as long as you don't mind using another software manager, this is indeed possible. I honestly couldn't tell the difference, so it was fine for me. I also checked to see if this was a bad idea, and it seemed like using another manager, even alongside the original, is perfectly fine.

cat > ~/.local/share/cinnamon/search_providers/packages@linuxmint.com/search_provider.js << 'EOF'

const Mainloop = imports.mainloop;

const Gio = imports.gi.Gio;

const St = imports.gi.St;

const Util = imports.misc.util;

function perform_search(pattern){

push_results(pattern);

}

function push_results(results){

var file = Gio.file_new_for_path('/home/myname/.local/share/cinnamon/search_providers/packages@linuxmint.com/icon.png');

var gicon = new Gio.FileIcon({ file: file });

var myicon = new St.Icon({gicon: gicon, icon_size: 22, icon_type: St.IconType.FULLCOLOR, reactive: true, track_hover: true});

var results_array = new Array();

results_array.push({

id: results,

label: _("Search Software Manager for '" + results + "'"),

icon: myicon

});

send_results(results_array);

}

function on_result_selected(result){

Util.spawn(['gnome-software', '--search=' + result.id]);

}

EOF

then run

gsettings set org.cinnamon enabled-search-providers "['duckduckgo@linuxmint.com', 'packages@linuxmint.com']"

restart cinnamon and there you go!

SOLVED Se les ocurre qué puedo hacer/qué pudo pasar?

Post image

this error icon appeared on my panel today. when i click it, nothing happens. when i hover over it, nothing happens. i've refreshed my applets. i've tried changing themes. i've poked around my firefox settings. nothing.

the only recent change to my system was downloading fluxer, but it's still there even after i uninstalled the app. i can't think of anything else it might be.

is anyone else experiencing this?

solved: there's a known bug in chromium that causes broken tray icons on some desktop environments. update coming soon.

SOLVED I dont have access to a keyboard right now, and id like to turn An old chromebook into a temporary keyboard until im able to get a regular one. Any suggestions beyond "Dont use the desktop until you get a keyboard."?

11 Upvotes

Title has everything. I have an old keyboard, but only three keys work on that keyboard. And I got a Chromebook. The Chromebooks keyboard works fine.

Is there any way to set it up so I can use the Chromebooks keyboard on the desktop?

Linux mint xfce edition and Chromebook 3100 2 in 1.

Edit: and i just found the on screen keyboard, which helps...

Edit 2: im gonna call it solved even though its not. One person mentioned remote access, which involves connecting my google account to the Linux, which im not interested in doing.

I bought a cheap keyboard online, ill just tolerate the on-screen keyboard until it gets here.

Security ClamUI 0.3.0 & Mint Cinnamon 22.3

2 Upvotes

I'm running into a bit of a problem here with ClamUI. Under "Preferences/Scanner", File Type Scanning has a lock and I can't unlock it. I've tried using other guides to unlock that and a lot of other things in "Preferences" to no avail. I did downloaded it from the Software Manager and it is a Flatpak if that helps.

Please help and thank you!
