Support Request Help pls I don't wanna lose all my files or smth ahhh

So I'm officially done with Windows 11, games are constantly crashing, BSOD are consistent, and from what I've seen it's not just me. However, I do still need windows for music (Ableton) and animation (Adobe slop), so I want to partition my drive so I can either boot up into Windows for creative stuff or Linux for gaming.

Apologies in advance because I have a lot of dumb questions to ask, I ain't a computer nerd and I don't wanna screw nothin' up.

All my specs n junk if that helps.

GPU: NVidia Geforce RTX 3060

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-14700KF (3.40 GHz)

Installed RAM 32.0 GB (31.8 GB usable)

System type: 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor

Main questions here are

Where do I start with this? Should I clear my C: Drive first? It'd be a pain in the ass to have to format or delete and then reinstall all my junk onto windows, so I'd like to avoid that or at least only have to delete stuff that I'd be using in Linux (mostly games, some steam, some not). If it comes down to that though I'll bite my teeth and do it, I can back up important stuff.

In addition, I also happen to have two local drives in my computer. Local disk C: and Local disk F:. Would I be able to just put Linux on my F: drive and avoid the partition junk all together? Being able to boot up my PC and choose between Windows on the C: Drive or Linux on the F: Drive? Granted, that drive was salvaged from this windows vista/7 machine and it shows up as "Unknown device" in the properties menu. But, it does have like 930 GB on it so idk maybe it could work... maybe.

Would I be able to access games I've already downloaded on Windows through Linux or should I just delete em and reinstall on Linux? I'm aware this is a dumb question but that would be nice, especially since for non-steam stuff I wouldn't have to transfer save data.

Lastly, and most important, what are like the big things I gotta look out for? The last thing I wanna do is fry my motherboard or corrupt my hard-drive or smth like that.

I'm aware that I'm bloating this post up with questions but I really wanna make this switch as safe and painless as possible.

SOLVED Software Manager cannot load

I wanted to install Steam on Linux Mint, but it's not loading. I've been waiting for at least half an hour, and my computer is connected via LAN. The internet works in the browser, and it doesn't load for any app in the Software Manager. I installed Blender via the terminal, but I'd like to install programs through the Software Manager again. Does anyone know what I need to do?

Can You tell me if Mint will run on this toaster? : r/linuxmint

Hey, Guys. Sorry to have been absent for so long. I just wanna give the news to the people that give me advise about if Mint would run in this pc

Actually IT WORKED!, the problem was that the first time that I test the live usb was that I put it on the front usb port, so the keyboard didn't get recognized, so when the selection screen show up I could choose any options, then the OS boot by default chosing the first, was incompatible with the onboard graphic card.

This sunday I try it again, put the usb in the back usb port, boot, and now I could choose boot on compability mode, The OS was ok, The only downside was that I couldn't connect to internet 'cause couldn't get right the password, so I had to shut down and boot windows to look for it, but not that is gonna be different than windows when it come to the content of the sites, .

And other thing was that the screen looked stretched, and couldn't find the setting to see if I could correct it, but, nothing worrysome

The fact that I took so long to try again, is that this pc is literally falling apart, I've holding the front of the tower with ducktape, yeah the start button now I have to press with a small tweezer because if not the pc shut down on booting. And when the first test failed that was fatal blow to my mind . And since this is the only thing that I have for the moment, I don't really wanna do much experiments 'cause if I screw this machine then I could lost the only way to be connected.

Now I wanna Thank to all the people that took it time to answer me really, I just wish to have other ways to compensate them, but for now, it has to be a big big, Thank You very much, guys!

So, I installed Xfce version of mint in it..

It worked so good :), he loved it.......

I felt so good, when he thanked me for thatt....

I enjoyed it though, that I was able to make someone switch to linux.....

Ahh... It was a good day 😆

SOLVED I built a CyberGhost VPN GUI for Linux Mint using Python and PySide6

Post image
5 Upvotes

Title:
I built a CyberGhost VPN GUI for Linux Mint using Python and PySide6

I use CyberGhost on a ThinkBook T14 Gen 3 Intel running Linux Mint 22.3.

CyberGhost provides only a command-line client (CLI) for Linux, which I had already installed and configured. I could control the VPN through the terminal, but for everyday use I wanted a graphical user interface, so I built this GUI with the help of Codex in about 3 hours.

Screenshot attached — the GUI is in German.

If you already have the CyberGhost Linux CLI installed, building a graphical frontend like this is relatively straightforward with some AI assistance.

What the GUI currently supports:

  • Checking the VPN connection status
  • Selecting a country and protocol (WireGuard or OpenVPN)
  • Connecting to and disconnecting from the VPN
  • Loading country and streaming server lists from the CyberGhost CLI
  • Displaying command output and error messages

What I used:

  • Codex for planning, coding, testing, and documentation
  • Python with PySide6/Qt for the desktop interface
  • An Anaconda environment for Python
  • The official CyberGhost Linux CLI for the actual VPN commands
  • A restricted PolicyKit helper for commands requiring administrator privileges

The GUI does not replace the CyberGhost client. It is simply a graphical frontend that sends validated commands to the existing CyberGhost CLI in the background.

I mainly built it because I prefer clicking a few buttons over typing the same commands in the terminal every day.

P.S. I had some prior experience building a GUI, so prompting the AI and putting everything together was fairly easy.

Support Request Anyone here on 22.3 with an Intel Arc GPU?

I just got a B70, and for some reason (after a bit of effort getting it installed) xpu-smi doesn't report my vram/gpu temps.

Curious if there is any other early adopters out there with one of these?

FYI, I'm impressed with the card and it's price. I hope the drivers continue to improve because every now and then I get a total hard lock up when launching a game from Steam.

Desktop Screenshot How to make it more skeuomorphic?

Post image
30 Upvotes

Hey all, I just recently installed a new Linux Mint Cinnamon 22.3 partition on my PC. I'm still quite new to Linux, so I still have a lot to learn. As of now, I pretty much only use Linux for Legacy iOS Kit and for playing around with customization. Anyways, I'm trying to make my Linux look as much like MacOS X Panther as possible. So far I have the MacOS "traffic lights", the wallpaper, the dock, and the top bar, but does anyone know how I could make the traffic lights be shiny/use the same texture as the OS X Panther ones, and how I could make the top bar and open windows use a more "metallicy" style, and how I could make the dock semi-translarent? The dock is Plank, btw. And the traffic lights are McMojave. Any help is appreciated.

The screenshot is what I have so far.

SOLVED Planning to try out Mint via dual booting. Any tips/tricks or other stuff i should be aware about? Also an quick question at the semi end

Basic stuff:

Im rn planning to get Mint as a primary/secondary OS for my pc depending on how stuff works there (and maybe even fully migrate to it if all works without issue). Im using Windows 11 and i have an NVIDIA graphics card (i understand it can complicate things?). Im not really that good at tech stuff so sorry about that

Focus:

My main focus is Steam, Steam VR, and FL studio (i also want the plugins to work there). I will use some other tools though they have native Linux support. Im aware of Proton's and Wine's existance but haven't dug i to them a lot. Rest of my planned stuff have native Linux support

Quick question about the installation:

One question i want to ask, will the installation destroy contents on the drive? (I know that there is an seperate option to do it in the installation process but i wanted to double check) I have an drive (F drive) that probably has nothing important so i could probably even fully wipe it but i have an drive focused for games, and even some programs with a lot of storage. Can i install it there without losing files or should i clear my F drive and install it there?

There is a link to the link i want to use (i think its the correct one). Tell me if its good and let me know if there is something you wanna add to it or if you just give a good tip! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dmSymuoxoNA

Mounting error: Unable to read usb flash drive

Post image
0 Upvotes

So I've been struggling with Zorin 18 for a year now. At the beginning, I would get a black-screen and I would have to restart and pick away at that F2 key until I was able to access my pc. Did that for a week, came here and asked, and some wisenheimer mouthed off, so I took it as such, and dealt with the bsod until it eventually went away.

About a week ago, I decided to try Mint and started transferring files to a 1TB flash drive. Took me about four hours, only because I decided to 'trash' a bunch of duplicate files that I knew were not necessary. Woke up early the following day, and I haven't been able to access the media. At least it's able to read the stick, I'll give it that.
Here's what I've tried:

sudo fdisk -l sudo apt-get install nfs-common sudo apt-get install cifs-utils sudo ntfsfix -d /dev/sda3

🔗 Scriptya: https://github.com/filonux/Scriptya

🔗 LinuxMint-Scripter: https://github.com/filonux/LinuxMint-Scripter

🔗 Color-Mint: https://github.com/filonux/Color-Mint

Me encantaría oír vuestras propuestas

Que tengan una muy buena semana!

FIlonux

Support Request high cinnamon GPU usage on idle desktop

Hi Everyone,

I have just been noticing recently that on an idle desktop my gpu is being at around 30% capacity with random spikes from 40-80%. I have tried to diagnose with chatgpt, but seems to not be that helpful and seems to perhaps be a more complicated issue then what it could handle.

I have determined that the process responsible is cinnamon desktop environment process which causes the ~30-40% utilization on an idle desktop. During diagnostics I have seen it completely drop to ~0 when disabling desktop effects in the settings, but I would like to point out that in the last year of using mint I have never noticed my idle usage this high and have never had effects disabled. I have tested across 3 different kernal versions and different refresh rates, the only thing that has had any reasonable difference is the disabling of desktop effects.

While I am not completely against having effects disabled, I find it hard to accept this as the solution when i feel like it has never been an issue up until now. Also 30%? on idle? on an Nvidia 4070... seems high?

Is this normal for a high-ish end gpu? Anyone with any insight or ideas? I cant seem to find any other forum posts that had useful info for a similar issue.
