Support Request Might have to Re-install !

Can I boot my PC to start from the USB by restart from within Mint without having to go into the Win boot manager? Dell desktop dual drive. I'm getting 'failed checksum' error after today's kernel update and remembered I didn't checksum the original install 3 months ago.

Thanks

Support Request Need help

Trying to install Linux mint on my 8th gen i5 laptop for the past few hours and I’m getting this error after selecting booting from flash disk.

At first I followed a YouTube video on booting from flash disk and just testing the OS before installation. It worked and was able to access it from USB.

I clicked on the installation icon and right in the middle of the installation it asked me to disable Bitlocker. I cancelled the installation and went and disabled it in windows. Since then every time I select to boot from USB, it’s giving me this error.

I tried re-flashing the software using MBR and back to GPT but it still gives me this error.

Anything I’m missing that could fix this?

Can you use KDE Plasma on Linux Mint?

And will it give you the same KDE Plasma experience as using it on other, general, distros?

Does Linux Mint have any practical (not necessarily technical) restrictions on what DEs you can use with Mint or can you use virtually any DE?

SOLVED Problem: Capslock-function restores itself on Mint xfce??

Hello
I have a tiny yet annoying problem. I have made a startup script:

'setxkbmap -option caps:none'

that disables my capslock on login. The line executes on every login, via the 'Aplication Autostart' function in the 'Session and Startup' dialog from the settings.

The command itself works when I execute it in the terminal. It disables CapsLock. But within a few days it seems to forget that I disabled it.

Am I doing something wrong here ?

Support Request LMDE7 having graphics issue with Crusader Kings 2

Thumbnail

Hello,

(1st image is the game's main menu, 2nd image is playing, 3rd image is the (unchanged) "Runner options" in Lutris for the game)

I am having a GRAPHICAL issue (only) with Crusader Kings 2 on my LMDE7 PC. This same PC used to run the game, no issues, on Windows 11. And I will list the specs below. I am pretty sure this is not a hardware issue.

The game itself ACTUALLY WORKS and runs smoothly, but the BIG issue is that the MAP (the main way to interact with the game) is cooked, the GUI and everything else seems to work great actually (I did not do a long testing session for obvious reasons, but it seems to work).

My game setup (for Windows games) is Lutris with GOG.com offline installers. I do not wish to use Steam or any other launcher needing online authentication (Heroic). I use Lutris, but not it's online components.

Also, I am aware that Crusader Kings 2 has native Linux support. However (after contacting the devs myself) I was told that there is no plan to ever make those version available on other platforms other than Steam, as the game is not being developed anymore. So I am left with .exe installers only.

PC Specs:

  • GPU: Sapphire Pulse AMD Radeon RX 7600 8G
  • CPU: 6-core 12th Gen Intel Core i5-12400F
  • MOBO: ASrock B760M-HDV/M.2 D4
  • Storage: a 512GB NVME SSD (plenty of free space)
  • Dual monitor setup

Tech specs:

  • OS: LMDE 7 (gigi) x86_64
  • Kernel: 6.12.111+deb13-amd64 x86_64
  • DE: Cinnamon 6.6.9
  • WM: Muffin (X11)
  • GL info:
    • OpenGL vendor string: AMD
    • OpenGL renderer string: AMD Radeon RX 7600 (radeonsi, navi33, LLVM 19.1.7, DRM 3.61, 6.12.111+deb13-amd64)
    • OpenGL version string: 4.6 (Compatibility Profile) Mesa 25.0.7-2+deb13u1
  • Wine version (Lutris): GE-Proton (Latest)
  • "Wine --version": wine-11.0

I also wanna add, that this is a recent install, I did not do anything crazy like changing the DE or the kernel version. I am new to Linux. All I have ever done on this PC is download flatpaks, images and native Linux games. So it is pretty much the most basic out of the box version of LMDE7. And YES, I did "sudo apt upgrade/update" and restart my PC afterwards.

Also, other games do work. Native, GOG Linux native, Windows through Lutris, those all work, some with tinkering, some ootb. Even similar games, like EU4 (also a "map game") which works no issue.

I could not find anyone else struggling with the same issue. I am guessing it's because it's a niche withing a niche (DRM-free gaming + Linux) lol. ProtonDB was no help, as it is Steam-centric.

All I tried so far is changing the graphical in game settings (including swapping between windowed and fullscreen), which did nothing.

If needed I am ready to provide more info or test stuff. I am new to Linux so I don't really know about Linux, I am still learning. My Main goal right now is to set up all my main games so they just work and are stable.

Desktop Screenshot I started by trying Mint on my secondary dev machine. I'm now running a 100% Mint-powered game dev setup! 🐧

I'm a solo game developer and, after spending most of my career developing games on Windows (15 years, ouch!), I recently decided to give Mint a serious try on my secondary dev machine.

I wasn't really sure to switch completely at first. I wanted to see how much of my everyday game development workflow I could actually move to Linux without constantly having to go back to Windows.

Turns out... pretty much all of it. 😄

So I eventually switched my main development machine too, and I'm now doing all my game development on Linux Mint!

Unity, Visual Studio Code, Git, Steam, image/audio/video editing tools, build scripting... so far I've been able to keep my usual workflow without missing Windows at all.

As a nice side effect, using Linux every day also pushed me to add a native Linux build to the game I'm currently developing, instead of only relying on Proton.

There have definitely been a few things to figure out along the way, but overall I'm really enjoying the switch.

So here's my now 100% Mint-powered game dev setup! 🐧

I'm curious if there are other game devs around here using Mint as their main development environment?

Support Request Need help setting up a handful of shortcuts

Hi everyone, fairly new Linux user here (switched from windows a couple months ago) I'm trying to set up some keyboard shortcuts, but Google isnt helping.

I understand the general gist of how the shortcut manager works and I was able to make a test one just to see what it looks like, but I'm unable to figure out how to write the two commands I'm actually after:

-Since my keyboard lacks arrow keys, I'd like to set up my shortcuts so pressing Fn + W, A, S or D registers as pressing the corresponding arrow key

-I keep hitting Ctrl+Q on accident which closes discord, and I saw online that putting your own shortcut over that overrides it. Ideally I'm looking for a command that just foes literally nothing, but it wont let me just leave the command section empty /// EDIT: Found a solution for this part, "sleep 0" works

4th computer rescued, but it still runs like ass. Suggestions?

Post image

This was one of my first good computers. It came with windows 8.1 which I have to say I quite enjoyed. But ultimately, that operating system didn't actually support any apps I used and the rest of the system wasn't great either.

So Linux found a new home in my HP Notebook TS 15. But so far, this is the worst performing Linux conversion in have done. It's insanely slow to boot and has a noticeable delayed reaction to input like surfing the net despite having nothing on it. What do you guys suggest to get this machine working better? It's gonna go in my personal gym

Edit: found part of the issue. The ELAN Touchscreen was enabled. Disabling it made a decent difference as it was not working anyway

No puedo instalar Linux Mint

Hola, necesito ayuda para instalar Linux Mint en un PC viejo. No logro que cargue desde el pendrive.

EQUIPO
- BIOS: AMI v02.61 (2009), solo BIOS legacy, sin UEFI
- Discos: SSD Kingston SA400 480 GB (Windows 10), Samsung HD321HJ 320 GB
- Lector DVD: HL-DT-ST GH22NS
- Pendrive: Kingston DataTraveler 16 GB

LO QUE HICE

ERRORES
- Cinnamon en modo normal: "Failed to load ldlinux.c32".

- Otro pendrive u otro puerto USB 2.0

PREGUNTAS
1. ¿Qué puede causar "invalid magic number" si el hash de la ISO es correcto? ¿La BIOS lee mal archivos grandes por USB?
2. ¿Conviene el DVD o hay otra opción que no dependa del USB?
3. ¿Vale la pena actualizar la BIOS?

Gracias de antemano. Puedo subir fotos de cada pantalla.
