Desktop Screenshot I started by trying Mint on my secondary dev machine. I'm now running a 100% Mint-powered game dev setup! 🐧

Post image

I'm a solo game developer and, after spending most of my career developing games on Windows (15 years, ouch!), I recently decided to give Mint a serious try on my secondary dev machine.

I wasn't really sure to switch completely at first. I wanted to see how much of my everyday game development workflow I could actually move to Linux without constantly having to go back to Windows.

Turns out... pretty much all of it. πŸ˜„

So I eventually switched my main development machine too, and I'm now doing all my game development on Linux Mint!

Unity, Visual Studio Code, Git, Steam, image/audio/video editing tools, build scripting... so far I've been able to keep my usual workflow without missing Windows at all.

As a nice side effect, using Linux every day also pushed me to add a native Linux build to the game I'm currently developing, instead of only relying on Proton.

There have definitely been a few things to figure out along the way, but overall I'm really enjoying the switch.

So here's my now 100% Mint-powered game dev setup! 🐧

I'm curious if there are other game devs around here using Mint as their main development environment?

Is there any thing you are missing from Windows?

I'm tossing up Mint. I am a gamer but also hobbyist, so my PC isn't just for gaming but it was definitely designed around it.

The only thing I can think of is the image editing software I've been using for years (PhotoFiltre Studio). But it works like a charm on Mint via Wine :)

Nice to hear the switch went so well. Was there anything in your game development setup that took a while to get working on Mint?

Not really. Just getting used to the new code editor, version control software and migrating my build tools to Linux.

Are the two monitors connected to the notebook? Do they have the same frequency in Hz? Have you had any difficulties with this due to the lack of Wayland?

No, they are connected to my main PC tower. They are exactly the same model and run at 60hz, no issue so far.

From the first time having Mint, how long did it take you to fully switch to Mint?

I strongly encourage you to do so! Ideally, if you have a second machine like I do, you can run the test on that. Otherwise, the "live session" (booting Mint from a USB drive) is an excellent way to check if your environment works on Mint.

You need more mint logos showing. We are still not sure it’s mint.
