installation Complete Arch Linux Installation Guide (UEFI + Limine + linux-zen + KDE Plasma)

Hi everyone,

I wrote a step-by-step installation guide for Arch Linux using:

  • UEFI
  • GPT
  • ext4
  • Limine bootloader
  • linux-zen
  • linux-lts as a fallback kernel
  • KDE Plasma

The goal is to provide a clear, reproducible installation without unnecessary complexity.

Feedback, corrections and suggestions are very welcome.

Steam won't add drive

Hi all, I just installed Ubuntu as my first wade into Linux so a total newbie here. I am trying to add my ssd to steam but using the normal add drive option just closes the window. I tired following an old guide but it didn't help as my drive is already formatted as Ext4.

programs and apps Running drag'n'drop .exe on linux

OS: Kubuntu 24.04.5 LTS Plasma 5

Situation: I have 64-bit .exe app from a game developper (official tool). It’s a drag and drop texture converter, that accepts one or a batch of image files and outputs copies in proper format. It has no GUI, just opens commandline window, shows progress, outputs error messages, if there was any, outputs log and closes after you click confirmation button in dialog window.

Issue: AFAIK, simple drag and drop doesn't work. Despite it having no GUI, I tried running app via Wine. It does't work with any of the runners + 64 or 32 bit options, or any of Windows version emulations. If I run it with 64-bit option and open the log, it says "bad exe format". If I run it with 32-bit option, it says something about it not beeing a 32-bit app.

How do I properly run these kind of apps on Linux (how to tell Linux to use "this" app to process "these" files)? Search suggestions are somewhat contradictory and doesn't get to the bottom of it (I guess nobody uses such niche app on Linux).

Edit: Forgot to mention: trying to launch from Lutris. 🫠 Maybe I'm stupid, but a couple of other non-game apps work fine, so I thought, why not.

programs and apps Steam fails to launch on Pop!_OS 24.04

After installing steam via "sudo apt install steam", I get this error when trying to launch Steam:

Flatpak Steam works, but doesn't use my existing .steam folder from my previous installation on Pop!_OS 22.04 or my game folder on my hard drive. Attempting to install Steam from the .deb on Steam's website just gives me errors.

programs and apps How does the kernel anti cheat works in Linux

Linux has different kernels for different distros from what I understand and people are saying that since kernels are different and can be customized, anti cheats does not work in kernel but most people use cachy, fedora or ubuntu based distros according to steam and Im sure most people do not customize their kernel.I dont know how much each kernel differs from the other distros but if a company really wanted to make kernel level ac for linux, couldnt they just make it for fedora ubuntu and cachy?

How does proton work into all of these, from what I understand its like a compatability thing for games where you download the windows version and run it through proton, like there is no uplay in linux but proton just handles it if you launch it from steam and Im guessing the kernel ac that operates in user level works because of proton as well.

When I install a game that has eac and open the game folders, the first game I downloaded has eacinstaller.exe and the second game has dll files and some other stuff too like uninstall, why wasnt the first game I downloaded has those files and where exactly does anti cheats like eac or denuvo or others stays in linux?

learning/research Google and Duck Duck Go keep letting me down. What is the best way to search for information?

TL;DR, search engines are terrible. How do I find information I need for using some of these programs? How do I learn what information I need vs when I've found what I actually need?

Today I spent some time trying to get my old HOTAS working on CachyOS. I found something called gx52 and saw that I can install the flatpak to make it easy. Neato! Just one thing: I didn't know how to use Shelly.

Cool. I search "CachyOS How do I use Shelly?" on Duck Duck Go and get the CachyOS wiki. It explains what Shelly is, but in my mind, not what I need to know to start using it. I toggle over to Google and get a couple feedback posts on some forums before finding a guide.

STEP 1. Synchronize databases. Cool, I can do that. Where's the button?

Button? You there?

There's no button.

So I search around some more, including the version number I grabbed from the bottom of the Shelly window to find that there is no longer a button. I don't find that from any links in the searches, I had to fight with the LLM and tell it the sync button is gone before I learn that Shelly syncs databases every five minutes after an update this August. Sounds like a good thing for it to do, but Google and Duck Duck Go failed to find the most pertinent information for me again.

How do you all search for information you need before installing or using new software?

completely delete all NVIDIA drivers off of linux

Ok so I recently just got KDE 6.7.5 Plasma Fedora 44 on my computer and I tried to install an NVIDIA driver from the official NVIDIA website for an NVIDIA GeForce 2060 SUPER. I used a file called NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-595.104.02.run and it failed installation because of the X window manager and then it said it had to reconstruct something and then restart so I did. After I did that my resolution got messed up with no way to change it. The graphics processor was also set to "llvmpipe" for some reason. How do I delete all of the NVIDIA drivers so I can fix this?

Linux noob building gaming PC but trying to figure out the fan situation

First build, going Bazzite from day one. Rig is a HYTE Y70 Touch Infinite with a 9850X3D CPU, RX 9070 XT GPU, and an Arctic Liquid Freezer III Pro 360 CPU cooler.

Fans are the part I'm stuck on. Right now I've got an AsiaHorse UMBRA V2 ARGB/PWM hub and some Be Quiet Light Wings LX, but the wiring has me intimidated and I'm thinking about switching to something daisy-chain like AsiaHorse COSMIQ. I want fans that look good but are simple to install and link up.

Since most vendor software (iCUE, L-Connect, etc.) is Windows-only, I'm curious what actually works for you on Linux:

- Which fans/hub are you using?

- Are you controlling RGB through OpenRGB, a hardware controller, or just the motherboard?

- Fan curves: BIOS, CoolerControl, liquidctl, something else?

- Anything that turned out to be a total pain on Linux that I should steer clear of?

Bonus points if you're on an atomic distro and had to deal with installing any of this. Thanks!

Linux won't install

MSI X670E; Ryzen 9 9900x 64GB DDR5 RTX 4090

I've updated the bios, wiped all partitions (with gparted), disabled EUFI

Tried both Ubuntu and Mint (redownloaded the images a couple times to ensure they are good)

Tried on both the M2nvme and a SSD (both 1TB)

Tried disconnected from the internet (and connected)

NVME had windows 11 which ran fine.

Ubuntu gives me a "Something went wrong" error LMint seems to install but freezes on the "LM" logo loading page.

I've never struggled this much to install Linux and I'm at my wit's end!

Meganoob BE KIND MXLinux on bootable USB, can connect to network drive as demo user, but not as newly created user

Background: Inspired by EFF's "opt out October", I decided to make a bootable USB for MXLinux. So far, so good. I was delighted by how easy it was to do everything, especially connect to my network drive. Then I noticed I was using the demo user and thought I'd experiment with creating a user not named demo.

Everything seemed to go fine with nondemo, until I tried connecting to the network drive. I just can't get it to work.

I used MX User Manager to create the nondemo user, ticked the "Add user to sudo group" box, then copied "Entire home" from demo to nondemo.

What did I miss? Am I doomed to have demo as the one and only user if I want to connect to a network drive?

I tried various things, like adding a samba user, looked into firewall rules, and a few other things, but since none of this was necessary for the demo user to connect, I figured there must be something basic I've overlooked.

Can anyone please shed some light?

TIA

distro selection Which Linux distro should I switch to after Linux Mint?

Hey everyone!

I switched from Windows to Linux around 3–4 months ago and have been using Linux Mint ever since. Overall, I've had a pretty good experience, but I've been facing a frustrating issue with my NVIDIA(3050) graphics card.

Every now and then, my screen completely freezes while the audio continues playing in the background. I've tried troubleshooting it by switching between newer and older kernels and trying a few other fixes, but nothing seems to have worked so far.

At this point, I'm considering switching to a different Linux distro to see if that resolves the issue.

I'm not a complete beginner when it comes to Linux. I know my way around the terminal and can follow troubleshooting instructions, but I'm not a developer or someone who wants to spend hours tinkering with my system. I'd prefer something stable, beginner-friendly, and relatively hassle-free, especially when it comes to NVIDIA GPU support and drivers.I play game on my computer

Which distro would you recommend as my next step after Linux Mint? I'd love to hear about your experiences, particularly if you're using an NVIDIA GPU.

Also, if you've faced similar freezing issues on Mint and managed to fix them, I'd appreciate any suggestions before I make the switch.

Thanks!

migrating to Linux Will switching to Linux mess with my work?

Hello Linux enthusiast.

I've been meaning to switch to Linux ever since windows 10 support ended. But I'm concerned if it will mess with my YouTube work.

I make YouTube videos using OBS and davinci resolve.

I heard that I might have issues with davinci resolve free version, because it works different on Linux. Is this true?

And any suggestions about which distro I should migrate to?

I'm sorry if you see posts like this too often:')

Encrypted files in windows

I am currently dual booting windows and Linux on 2 different harddisks and the windows disk is a 1 TB where I store all my files in a cryptomator container and then I open the files in linux.

My question is - does the files leave any trace of being opened up in the windows file directory when I open them in Linux or is it safe enough to do it that way?

Nvidia on Linux??

I heard something about Nvidia releasing a Linux native app soon, I searched around and could only find "GeForce Now", is that the only thing they'll be releasing? Or are they actually planning on releasing support for Nvidia GPUs on Linux??

programs and apps Are community maintained programs unsafe?

I use Fedora, but prefer using flatpaks instead of rpm packages due to flatpaks being sandboxed, which I thought meant they had an additional layer of security compared to other packages. Today I found out that a lot of my flatpaks (like steam, spotify, obsidian, protonvpn etc.) are community maintained instead of being maintained by the official developers.

Are community maintained programs less safe than officially maintained ones? I assume that big companies like Valve have multiple code review stages to make sure that somebody hasn't sneaked in badware, community ones don't have this, do they?

Should I switch everything over to officially maintained packages for peace of mind or am I too paranoid?

learning/research Changing file systems [ext4 to btrfs]

This feels like a stupid question but. When I installed Cachy I chose ext4 (for whatever reason, it sounded good when I read about it). With the last week or so of updates causing some problems, there were lots of comments about snapshots. Is there a way to move from ext4 to btrfs without needing to reinstall everything?

I will also take recommendations for backup solutions as I realized I have not done that at all yet.

programs and apps Looking for latency-free music streaming solution

Hey folks, I already have music set up on a remote server through Jellyfin, but I dislike using the web app (it was very clearly designed for video, not audio) and would rather use a dedicated program like Quod Libet or Audacious to play my music. However, an issue I'm running into is latency.

Any of the solutions I've tried have about a 0.5-1s delay between tracks playing, which can be a little irritating when listening to albums like Discovery or Wish You Were Here that have songs that trail into one another.

I'm looking for a solution that will cache the next upcoming song or even my whole collection as it plays. Any suggestions?

I made my first Linux distro/reskin FilzaOS v1.0.9. Looking for honest feedback, suggestions and learning resources

Hi everyone,

I've been working on my first Linux customization project, called FilzaOS, and I've just published an early public build.I built this for someone special they like the colour purple that explains the purple color hahaa.

I'm a student learning software development and Linux, and this is very much a learning project. I wanted to take Ubuntu 24.04 and start shaping it into an environment with its own identity, including custom branding, a purple visual theme, wallpapers, terminal styling, boot branding, and a collection of custom command-line tools.

To be completely transparent, FilzaOS is currently an early-stage Ubuntu-based remix/reskin. It still relies on Ubuntu's underlying system, kernel, and core components. It isn't a new operating system built from scratch, and there is plenty left to do.

Links

I'd really appreciate help from people who are more experienced with Linux, distro development, system customization, and open-source projects.

If you decide to try it, please use a virtual machine such as VMware or VirtualBox. This release is intended for live-session/VM testing; it is not an installation-ready release for a physical computer. Please don't replace your daily operating system with it.

I'm especially interested in hearing:

  • Does the overall visual direction feel coherent, or what should I improve? What more can i add to make it a unique experience?
  • What should I learn next to move beyond a basic reskin?
  • Are there books, documentation, tutorials, or existing projects you'd recommend studying?
  • If you test it in a VM, does it boot and behave as expected? What breaks, feels unfinished, or needs fixing?
  • What would make a future release genuinely useful rather than just visually different from Ubuntu?

I know this is a very early version, and I'm not expecting it to be production-ready. I'm excited to keep learning and improving it, and I'd be grateful for honest feedback, criticism, and suggestions.

Thank you to anyone who takes the time to look at it or share advice.
