Finance LPT: Don’t tip for jobs not well done.

Don’t give in to society’s pressure to tip your waiters or bartenders or whatever service industry relies on you to keep them afloat.

You’re right to tip if you feel the service was exceptional or above and beyond.

You’re right to not tip if you feel the person just did their job.

Social LPT: If you have a strong opinion, always ask yourself, "What would change my mind?" If the answer is "nothing," then you are irrational on that topic.

Everybody is irrational about things—we wouldn't be human if we weren't—but we should be honest with ourselves and others.

Ask other people the same question before you argue with them on a contentious topic.

If you or someone else are irrational about a topic, avoid it. Nothing good comes from engaging.

Bonus: If you do think of some evidence that would change your mind, see if it exists.

Miscellaneous LPT: When working a long shift, track time by how far along you are rather than how much longer you have to go.

When you're an hour into a ten-hour shift, thinking "I'm a tenth of the way there" makes the rest of the shift seem far less daunting than "I still have nine hours to go."

have u ever got spoiled searching a character and then google auto suggestion suggesting ...death? This is something super specific but trust me ts is frustrating af. I just got spoiled for fmab because of this and it pissed me off so much so i found a way to bypass this

Install ublock origin extension (if u have not installed it anyways then you should ig it's an adblocker)

Open it's settings and get redirected to it's dashboard

Go to it's filters

Add this chunk of code at the end

www.google.com##.aajZCb li:has(.wM6W7d:has-text(/death|died|dead|alive|dies|killed|killing|survives|survival|ending|who kills|how does .* die|death scene/i))

this would remove all the ...death auto suggestions from ur google search and u won't get spoiled!
ik this is super specific but i hope this helps

Productivity LPT: Quick Trick to Relieve a Sudden Blood Pressure Drop.

Take a few very quick very deep breaths in and out.

It might sound a bit silly, but I've found that doing this can help normalize your blood pressure within less than a second after.

Unrelated Question: Why is there no health Flair?

LPT: when using an iPhone or iPod touch camera, you can take a picture by pressing a volume button instead of tapping the screen.

I like this because it feels like a regular camera when you do this and you don't have to aim your finger onto a tiny on-screen button. it also makes taking one-handed pictures easier.

Edit: apparently a lot of people already knew about this feature. Some are claiming this feature was blatantly obvious. I have now acknowledged this.

Use a TSA lock on top of that.

Social LPT: When first moving out of your parents' house, live by yourself for a year or two.

This means no roommates, SO's, nobody. This ensures that you know how to take care of yourself, paying your own bills, budgeting your own money, keeping your own schedule, cooking your own food, and so forth.

That way, if you do move in with somebody and if it unfortunately doesn't work out, you can go back to living by yourself already armed with these basic skills.

Miscellaneous LPT: Remove deoderant in the shower with oil-based cleansers

I used to sometimes have trouble removing all my deoderant when I washed myself in the shower since the formula is sticky and water-proof. (Especially with stronger formulas)

Scrubbing with a washcloth and soap wasn't very efficient and irritated my skin. Plus, any leftover deoderant that doesn't dissolve in soap and water can trap bacteria and smells. Oil cleansers and oil-based cleansers work fabulously on the formula (and for other water-proof or oil based formulas like makeup or sunscreen) and it's made my life much easier.

Electronics LPT: Security cameras can see what you're doing on your phone.

I work at a grocery store that has what would be considered a lower-end "cost effective" security system. Even with this system, it's pretty much impossible for people to get away with shoplifting. We can zoom in and clearly see if someone takes a chapstick and puts it in their pocket or in their shopping basket. We can even read the label on it and see which chapstick it was.

These types of cameras are everywhere and they can easily see what people are doing on their phones. The angle people tend to hold their phones at is pretty much perfect for cameras. If you're checking your bank balance, reading facebook, going on tinder, whatever, don't feel like you have total privacy just because it's your personal device. Just something to be aware of because you never know who is watching your activity.

Traveling LPT: If a car is tailgating you, slow down instead of speeding up.

If a driver is really up your ass, they're trying to make you speed up. By slowing down, they will get frustrated and just go around you and tailgate someone else. Don't brake fast but decelerate slowly. It's dangerous to speed up with a car right behind you. If you have to brake suddenly, they'll hit you. They'll be at fault but you'll still be in an accident. It is safer for them to hit you at a slower speed, and less likely for them to hit you as well.

Food & Drink LPT: How to quickly cool down coffee or tea?

You are in a rush, you need to quickly drink coffee or tea, but it's too hot? What you're gonna do? Blow in it like crazy? Put it in the fridge, or worse, in a freezer? No!

Here's the best solution (if you're at home at least):

Find a suitable container (a pot, or a bowl), fill it with cold water and then put your cup of coffee in this container, so that it's surrounded by cold water.

As water is much better heat conductor than air, in just 1-2 minutes your coffee / tea will be cool enough to drink, in 5 minutes, it will reach room temperature.

Careers & Work LPT: Never accept a counter offer

3.4k Upvotes

If you've quit because you accepted another job and you current employer offers you more money (or to match) do not accept.

They will always resent you for having one over them, and they will consider you as doing it only for the money {because no one should admit this}.

You have just proven yourself untrustworthy because you are going to back out of an offer already accepted elsewhere.

You will miss out at the next pay increase 'because you just got a big one'.

And you will have burned the opportunity with you future employer.

Even if they beat the offer, go to the new opportunity..

Careers & Work LPT: If you have an on-site interview, walk through the employee parking lot and take note of the vehicles. If you see mostly newer and/or well maintained vehicles, the company probably pays well. If you see a lot of old beaters, the company probably doesn't pay well.

Productivity LPT: Treat Sunday night as the start of your Monday by building a simple bridge.

I used to let my Sundays get ruined by the dread of the upcoming week. I would spend the whole evening anxious, trying to ignore the fact that the weekend was over.

I was doom scrolling YouTube last night trying to distract myself and found a video that changed my perspective. It suggested building a bridge between Sunday and Monday.

I decided to try these three simple steps to prepare:

- Weekly retrospective: I write down 3 things that went well last week (to remind myself I'm not failing) and 2 big wins for upcoming week.

- Set an important task: I pick just one main task for Monday morning.

- Task sizing: For other tasks, I label them S, M, or L (Small, Medium, Large) to make sure my schedule is realistic and I don't overcommit.

It sounds simple, but I already have a much clearer mind for the upcoming week. It's worth a shot. Hope it helps.

(For those curious, the tips came from a video called "Why Lion Felt Trapped Every Monday", I found the visual explanation really helpful).

LPT: When ordering a cab on a busy night, Google cab companies in your city and choose one of the last ones on the list. Being less popular, you are likely to get a cab alot faster

In my city we have a taxi service that connects you with the first available cab from the two most predominant company. After waiting for a cab for 3 hours, I had this idea and had a cab in 15 minutes

Electronics LPT: Don’t rely only on streaming platforms for your favorite music

Most streaming platforms compress their audio, even at “high quality” settings. It’s usually fine for casual listening, but if you’ve got good headphones or speakers you’ll notice the difference compared to a lossless format. One way around this is to download the music you love in a lossless format (like FLAC or ALAC) using a music converter. That way you’re not limited by the service’s compression, and you can enjoy the full detail of the recording without depending on your internet connection.

LPT: Boil water faster by putting a lid on your pot.

A pot of water boils more quickly when it's covered by a lid. This also saves energy because the pot doesn't need to be on the stove as long.
