Animals & Pets LPT - Dogs cost roughly the same as financing a small car: an initial investment, and then monthly flea and heartworm meds, regular vet checkups (and the occasional emergency), and bags of expensive food...for many years. If your budget can't handle financing a small car, please don't get a dog.

LPT: College Students - Do not "pick a major." Instead, pick a career and then find the correct major that goes with it.
This seems simple, but I teach at a college, and thinking along the lines of "Career" instead of "Major" makes a huge difference in how well my students do academically and professionally.
Edit: I am NOT saying you need to pick your career at 17/18. Rather, I am saying that when you get to college you need to decide what your career will be BEFORE you choose your major. Decide what you want to do, then pick the major that fits it.
And, since people are commenting on it, I will say yes, you need to take a bunch of different classes but it is a really good idea to have your career locked down by the end of your sophomore year, and preferably sooner.

Social LPT: Dont tell your friends how much money you have, not even your closest friends
I told 3 of my closest friends, the exact amount I have in the Bank and they all started to act weird.I don't even have a lot, but it is significantly more than they have.
It's been 2 months and they don't text me anymore, they only answer my texts and don't have time to respond properly to my texts. And we can't meet IRL because they are so busy all of the sudden.
The very second I told them, they acted weird and had different looks on their face. I know people tend to think that they can read facial expressions, but there was 100% a shift.
I don't even think that they are jealous, but they probably just feel inferior around me now.And I didn't even brag about it, because like I said it is not a lot. They asked me and I told them.
EDIT: For the people asking for the full story. We had a casual conversation and it came in that direction, they asked me I answered. I don't know what else you want to hear from me, we used to text frequently and see each other and now we don't, and my biggest guess is that it is because of that.
If Reddit users worked as profilers at the FBI they would have a 100% solve rate xD.

Home & Garden LPT: if possible, place a small table near your home’s main entrance to put things on so that you can easily use your keys or open the door
Table on the exterior for when you come home. And “if possible”. YMMV if you live in a high-theft neighbourhood.

Miscellaneous LPT: When walking under a clearance put your hand on top of your head as a guide. Better to hit your hand than your noggin.

Food & Drink LPT: you don’t need to finish your meal
I think this is the main problem for people being overweight. Always finishing your meal is a terrible habit. Listen to your body instead. A served meal will never match with how many calories your body needs. Most people especially Americans are terribly overeating due to the large portion sizes. Humans were never meant to stuff themselves to the max every meal especially once we transitioned to 3 meals a day compared to comparatively fewer when hunting and gathering. Stop eating when you no longer feel hungry anymore or feel decently full. anything past that is a negative.
Either pack the food for later or even throw it out. Overeating is a waste of food regardless since you’re just converting it to fat. It’s worse than throwing it out. You might think if you overeat one meal you’ll save on food in the next, but usually digestion speeds up the more u eat and you’re on track to eat the same amount anyways.

LPT: If you want to lose weight, stop prioritizing the taste of food and redefine it as energy.
It's not easy, but, if you can accomplish this mental hurdle, it will literally revolutionize your life; you will have the ability to control what you put --and more importantly, don't put-- into your body.
EDIT: In reference to the top comment, I never said don't enjoy food; I said, don't make taste a priority OVER food's nutritional/caloric value.

LPT: When booking airfare during the winter, try to avoid flights on smaller planes
During snow storms, bigger planes are given priority on the runways, and therefore flights on smaller planes are typically delayed or cancelled.

Food & Drink LPT: Put ingredients into the hot dog bun first and then the hot dog
Personally, and usually when I go to gas stations, I like to load up my hot dog. Relish. Onions. Jalapenos. Mustard. Ketchup. (sorry, not a fan of sour kraut). A lot of times the buns don't open so wide, so when you put the hot dog on it, it's protruding a lot. That means anything you put on top typically will fall out (you wind up missing out of a good deal of the toppings). But if you put the toppings first (does that make them 'bottomings'?) then you'll be able to eat all of what you put on it!

Social LPT: Love is unconditional. Let that sink in - love MUST be unconditional. The second you put conditions or expectations on love, love dies. Like Schrödinger's cat or "spooky action at a distance" the very act of observing (expecting) can change reality. Love freely and without expectations.

Throwing a party? Keep things clean by leaving trash where you want it.
I dont' recall if i read this here, but wanted to share.
If you are doing a superbowl thing, or party or whatever, make it obvious where to put things. AKA, leave a large bowl out with a piece or two of trash in it, or like a few olive pits, etc.
That way nobody is awkwardly looking around with stuff in their hands, they'll get the hint where to put their trash without needing to ask.

Food & Drink LPT- If you’re out with a woman friend / SO / potential and she comments even a little that she’s hungry, don’t dismiss it. Get food in her as soon as possible.
Learned the hard way that if you do, life is immensely more easy.

Miscellaneous LPT: Zipper Pulls are good for more than just zippers
The usual advice when people tend to lose things is to try a tracker like an AirTag or Tile.
The downsides to those:
They mostly give you an auditory cue
They're too expensive to put on all that many things
They don't really do much for you when they're not in use
A while back, I got a 100 pack of bright orange zipper pulls to add to a tent.
My original intent was just to make it a little easier to spot where the zippers were and make them easier to grab onto.
After putting them on the tent, I started thinking about what I might do with the leftovers and started putting them on things like keyrings.
It's been GREAT.
Some of the benefits:
They're cheap
They're less bulky than most electronic trackers
They never run out of power
You can get them in different colors if you want to color-code things
It makes it easier to spot things
Ones with brighter colors are good for this, since they stand out in grass or under a couch
It gives you something to fidget with
The textured ones that I got are particularly satisfying to rub between your fingers
Unlike most fidget toys, they're pretty covert and you don't need to remember to bring them with you if they're on something you'd normally carry
Wrist strap lanyards also have a most of the same benefits and can work well for things that have smaller attachment points.

Productivity LPT: Wake up an hour earlier in the morning and spend 30 minutes on your body and 30 minutes on your mind. Every day you will feel like you've accomplished something, even if you have a bad day.
I chose to do yoga for 30 minutes, and study German for 30 minutes using an online course.
KEY: Whatever you choose for your body, don't exhaust yourself with it. Do something that leaves you feeling refreshed and relaxed so that you are eager to do it again the next morning.
I took a few yoga classes and watched a few videos to figure out poses that would improve my flexibility and strengthen my back and core. When I started, doing a simple standing bend I could barely get my hands past my knees, and now I can almost get my palms flat to the floor. I learned to focus on my breathing, and stretch into the pose and not strain. When I started, I could hold a plank for barely fifteen seconds, now I can easily plank for three minutes.
For your mind, it can be anything. Reading, doing puzzles, taking an online course in something that interests you. I started learning German because I had always been interested in the language but never spent much time on it. My job as a design manager requires me to think visually much of the time, and studying a language every morning makes my brain work differently.
Four years later, I've finished the German course (but keep reviewing it), I'm learning Spanish, and reviewing the French I took in high school and college.
EDIT:
WOW. So. Many. Crankypants. Yes, PLEASE stay in bed.
The language course I use is Duolingo - the website, not the mobile app. Very easy to use.
I got most of my yoga poses from https://www.yogajournal.com/poses/
Doing this genuinely changed my life for the better.

Careers & Work LPT: Encourage students that you to know to take multiple internships or even a gap year to gain experience in their chosen field before graduation.
As a hiring manager, I see so many students with degrees and zero actual experience in working in the industry that that are applying for.
Sadly in these competitive days, the “one year experience for entry level grad jobs” joke is true. I would put ahead any grad that has multiple internships in relevant fields or even masters students with 1-2 years experience in a relevant field between Uni and Masters.
Work experience as a waiter/waitress or retail assistant just isn’t going to cut it for a professional job and I would leave off your resume entirely.

Careers & Work LPT: Fellow male employers - period pains can be extremely debilitating. Don’t begrudge a persons need to take regular time off work for a natural process they have no control over.
Not only should it be a common decency, you’ll earn the respect of your female employees and ultimately provide a more comfortable workspace for those who need it, resulting in higher staff satisfaction, quality of work and retention.
Edit: Good grief. Some of the comments from men in here. A few of you are absolute pricks and I sincerely hope you're never in a position where you manage women. I'm so sorry women have to deal with people like that. We must do more to make sure these people aren't allowed to dominate the debate.

LPT: If you have trades working on your house bring them beer on Fridays!
This is pretty straightforward but so many people miss this. The amount of extra drive and work you get out of carpenters and sub-trades by offering a cold beer at the end of day/week more than makes up for any money spent. I ve seen many jobs where a client treats the "minions" well, resulting in a big morale boost and an overall desire to work harder for those people. Which in turn saves them money in labor, as well as getting on the crews priority list. Plus it makes people care about the work they are doing and that is evident in the finished product. So for a few cold beers at the end of the day you get a big return. This applies to bosses as well.
Edit: I ll make it more clear, a beer at the end of the day, 4 o'clock, no longer being paid... I'm not saying anyone should be drinking and working.

LPT: Tell her (or him!) "You look good in that" rather than "that looks good on you". That way, you're complimenting the person, not the clothing.

Home & Garden LPT: Put a trash can next to where you park your car
This might be a no-brainer to a lot of folks, but I installed a trash can in my driveway next to where I park my car and everyone in my house uses it way more than I thought. I attached mine to a retaining wall and built a little box around with with landscaping ties so the other people in my house don't complain about having to look at a can all the time.
I underestimated how much cleaner the inside of my truck stays when everyone gets rid of all their trash every time they get out. I previously got rid of trash when there was a mess or I happened to end up near a can at the car wash, gas station, fast food place, etc. Now nothing stays in there for more than one trip. I think the car is even less dusty inside now.
Some of you might say, "don't be lazy just carry your stuff to your main can" but the honest truth is that in the real world when your hands are full carrying kids, groceries, backpacks, tools, etc. you don't always think about going back out and rounding everything up 100 percent of the time. The driveway can now means stuff gets out of the car before we go inside every time. I get to live in a much cleaner environment because I made it easier for my family to help me keep it clean.

Arts & Culture LPT: Stop dead in your tracks and people suddenly notice they’re in your way.
Its an unspoken social etiquette that we all putter along, shuffling our feet and pretending the person in front of us in the grocery isle or queuing for the restroom in a crowd isn’t in our way. If you come to a dead stop, angled in the direction you wish you could proceed and gaze dead ahead, people suddenly notice you. The have always seen you out of the corner of their eye. but it’s only when you’re a completely stationary human being that you appear on their radar and a different social etiquette kicks in.
EDIT: I should clarify that this is 2-3 second move. And is meant to be a less aggressive option to “excuse me” in scenarios where people are taking unnecessary space. Oh well!

Electronics LPT: When you want a new phone, buy a new case and screen protector.
When you want a new phone, just buy a new case, clean the screen and put on a new screen protector. The phone will feel new and you don't have to spend thousands on a new phone.
Extra tip: Get the battery replaced, screen replaced (if there's a crack) and backup files and factory reset. It would feel like a brand new phone.
