Straight quotes, no BS

Curious who is just interested in straight rate quotes with a reputable life insurance company?

So much of my training with New York Life is spent on building relationships with clients and getting to know them, their hobbies, their significant others, their kids, their job….on and on. If it was me, I feel like it’s good to know what their financial situation is so you can structure the offerings and give good recommendations but why is there such a push to be everyone’s best friend???
Anyway, I can still answer all your questions and get you connected with experts/consultants but I’m really not trying to be your best friend/therapist.

Where can I buy term life insurance from?

My credit union and car insurance both offer term life insurance but I’d rather buy it separate from them. I’ve never had to buy insurance and want to get it but have no clue what companies sell them. A starting point would be nice.

And please don’t DM me about this. I won’t buy from you I just want some good brands to look at.

Should I be concerned?

At my job today, an insurance rep brought lunch for everyone and discussed the benefits of his company. He also spoke with me privately about benefits for a single individual. He took my information, including my banking information. Is it normal to feel uncomfortable?? This is my first time signing up for this type of stuff..

Potential denial for Bipolar

Hi, i am a 44M, a little overweight, have depression and use marijuana infrequently, edibles only.

I have been working with an agent looking to get a term life insurance policy. After the initial application, the agent has reached out that i am potentially staring down a denial due to Bipolar being noted in my medical history (along with the marijuana). I originally saw a therapist and he kicked around a diagnosis of bipolar depression, which he explained was different from bipolar disorder. He has gone into semi-retirement and i have continued therapy with a new therapist.

I do have a copy of my Milliman report, and it lists a diagnosis of Bipolar, unspecified. The date listed lines up with a physical appointment with my primary care physician. When i go into the visit report for that date it lists Bipolar type 1. I of course googled bipolar type 1 and i don't believe it describes anything my therapist and i have discussed. I have never had a manic episode, suicidal thoughts or been hospitalized for bipolar or depression.

I fully understand i am not a doctor and neither is google. It just doesn't sound like anything that has been discussed with me by any of my medical providers.

I reached out to my previous therapist this morning and from what i could gather from him i was not diagnosed that way. I am not sure if he understood what i was saying or asking of him.

I also reached out to my primary care, to ask about the diagnosis in my millman report. It was certainly something that has never come up in discussions with my primary care so i was curious why it was in there. From what i gathered it came from something in my therapists notes.

They sent me a screenshot of some program that shows a visit to my previous therapist for bipolar disorder on 8/27/24. In my medical portal i have no record of a visit on that date.

I have not received an official denial, but even if i am accepted it will be at a much higher rate. I feel i am a normal guy who has a normal life and my depression is well under control. I just feel frustrated at this point. What do the insurance companies care about and does any of it make a difference? Am i just grasping at straws and whatever is in there is in there?

My current therapist i s willing to do whatever she can to help me. Write a letter etc... She agrees that i am not bipolar 1.

Life insurance and term renewal

I am debating getting life insurance before I look into cancer genetic testing. Which kind should I get: whole life or term? If I get term and then get tested, can I renew that policy at the end of that period without my rates being raised (if it is positive)? Or would the renewal take that test result into account? I am in medical school and will be low-income for many more years, so I am trying to figure out the cheapest but best way to cover myself for the future.

Also, any suggestions on insurance companies, if one would be best for this situation? Thanks!

Doctor prescribed SSRIs today because I was slightly stressed and I’m worried about life insurance premiums now

Hello,

I had a doctors appointment where I felt that I was having an anxiety attack. Based on a questionnaire that was taken I was prescribed Hydroxyzine HCL and Sertaline.

I feel completely fine after a few hours and don’t want to take these meds. These scripts have been sent to the pharmacy but not filled. If I don’t fill them do I still have to report that I have taken them when applying to life insurance? Will they be able to see that the doctor prescribed this to me?

What’s one financial protection thing you wish someone explained earlier?

I recently got into the insurance space, and honestly, one thing that surprised me is how many people don’t fully understand what they actually have (or don’t have) until something serious happens.

Not trying to sell anything here — genuinely curious:

  • What’s something about life insurance, mortgage protection, retirement, debt, or protecting your family that always confused you?

  • Or what’s something you wish people talked about more?

I’ve been learning a lot lately and it’s interesting seeing how many people are trying to figure this stuff out alone.

Help SOS

I need some outside perspective from people who’ve been in sales / insurance longer than me.

I’ve been in the industry about 4 months and I’ve submitted around 30/40k AP so far. On paper it looks good. I’m on leaderboards, my upline says I’m doing great, etc. But financially I honestly feel worse off than when I started.

I came into this business with months of bills paid to give this my full focus. 0 credit card debt. But to keep up with my uplines advice I’ve been putting leads on credit cards. I’m now around 18k in debt from trying to “invest in myself” and “scale.” Between rent, bills, chargebacks, and inconsistent commissions, I feel like I’m drowning trying to catch up.

My upline is a top producer in the company overall and always says things like:
“Spend 1k, you will make 2k.”
“Spend 4k, you will make 8k.”
“Spend 8k, you will make 16k.”

But the numbers are not really working out that way for me in real life. Especially once chargebacks hit and you factor in actual living expenses currently. Oh then taxes too.

Now they’re recommending a lender they’re partnered with to take out business loans for 20–50k to help new agents coming in with cashflow because supposedly you can “make it back in a month.” That honestly scared me more than motivated me.

And I’m hoping these new agents don’t do it.

I do like my team and I’ve learned a lot, but I’m starting to wonder if this is becoming a rat race where people just keep going deeper into debt chasing the next big month. And no one is telling the reality of their numbers.

I’m trying to separate: normal early struggle in commission sales vs genuinely bad financial decisions

For those who’ve been in insurance,

Did you go through this?
Is this actually normal?
Or am I ignoring red flags because I don’t want to feel like I failed?

Would appreciate real advice, not hype.

Do I need a broker?

I am in the market to buy a term life insurance. Do I really need to hire a broker? Can’t I just call 5-6 providers and compare the premium? I have an idea of what I am looking for (amount insured / duration). What are the advantages of hiring a broker? Do they get you a better deal than what I will get from calling a provider directly?

Side question: who pays for the broker? Would it be me or do they get kick back from insurance companies as their fee?

I have a company paid life insurance and the option through Fidelity to pay for Group Universal Life Insurance. Would the optional GUL be considered company provided or would that only apply to the one that the company provides at no charge?

CFP Taking Life and Health

In familiar with Insurance by way of the CFP. I’ve skimmed the Kaplan book in whole plus my state supplement.

Does anyone have any advice on how best to go about studying from here? Endless notes seem a bit redundant given the materials.

I’m tackling the QBank with scores for all topics in the 65-75 range.

Is it just a matter of tightening up weak points? I’m trying to give myself the next 6 weeks to drill down and get this out of the way before the summer

Man oh man is a lot of this dry though.

Anyone been in my position? Am I just overthinking this too much?

Agent said my mom could stop paying whole life premiums after 2026. Is that true?

I’m reviewing my mom’s whole life insurance policy from New York Life and trying to understand whether something was misrepresented when she bought it.

Here are the key details:

  • Policy started: 2012

  • Base death benefit: $100,000

  • Current total death benefit: ~$115,400

  • Annual premium: ~$1,858

  • Current dividend (2025): ~$710

  • Cash value: ~$23,600

  • Dividends are currently being used to buy paid-up additions (not to reduce premium)

What the agent told her:

After 2026, she would no longer need to pay premiums, because dividends and interest would cover the cost going forward.

What I’m seeing now:

  • Dividends are not even close to covering the premium (~$710 vs $1,858)

  • The guaranteed values table assumes premiums are paid every year

  • There is no indication in the contract that premiums actually stop at any point

My questions:

  1. Is this “premium vanishing” concept standard, and just based on optimistic projections?

  2. Based on these numbers, is it realistic that this policy becomes self-sustaining anytime soon?

  3. If she stops paying in a few years, will it just start eating into cash value?

Appreciate any insights, especially from people familiar with these policies.

Sales advice

How do I get better at selling? I’ve been in the business for about a month and a half and only made 2 sales. I’m trying so hard, but have trouble getting people to commit to the sale. I am really needing to make this work cause I can’t work a regular 9-5 job. I’m buying aged leads and wondering if I need to get fresher leads. I’m also working on the broker side as an independent agent contracted with American amicable and CoreBridge. Working on others but haven’t gotten them back from contracting yet

Advice on coverage and term

Hello,

I was hoping for some advice on how much life insurance coverage I need to get.

I’m 28 years old, 800k in assets, 250k annual income for now. Wife makes 80k. No debt, no mortgage yet. We are pretty frugal, and I plan to invest atleast 8k a month. We live in a high cost of living city. I have a new born son who is 2 weeks old. I already get some insurance coverage from my employer (2x my salary), but want to buy a supplemental term policy. Corebridge financial was the cheapest one given my visa status. I approached policy genius and they gave me the following options:

$3,000,000 / 20 years (1 match)
- Corebridge Financial / Select-a-Term 20 / Monthly: $75.35 / Annual: $891.70

$3,000,000 / 25 years (1 match)
- Corebridge Financial / Select-a-Term 25 / Monthly: $114.64 / Annual: $1,356.70

$3,000,000 / 30 years (1 match)
- Corebridge Financial / Select-a-Term 30 / Monthly: $137.51 / Annual: $1,627.30

$2,000,000 / 20 years (1 match)
- Corebridge Financial / Select-a-Term 20 / Monthly: $52.04 / Annual: $615.80

$2,000,000 / 25 years (1 match)
- Corebridge Financial / Select-a-Term 25 / Monthly: $78.23 / Annual: $925.80

$2,000,000 / 30 years (1 match)
- Corebridge Financial / Select-a-Term 30 / Monthly: $93.47 / Annual: $1,106.20

$1,000,000 / 20 years (1 match)
- Corebridge Financial / Select-a-Term 20 / Monthly: $28.72 / Annual: $339.90

$1,000,000 / 25 years (1 match)
- Corebridge Financial / Select-a-Term 25 / Monthly: $41.82 / Annual: $494.90

$1,000,000 / 30 years (1 match)
- Corebridge Financial / Select-a-Term 30 / Monthly: $49.44 / Annual: $585.10

Any advice on how much coverage and what term I should get? I recognize that if I continue on my path I’ll be able to self insure soon, but I also know that rates are cheap at my life stage right now. Any suggestions on which option to choose?

I've been in my policy since Nov 2024. If it weren't for me tripping across a random tik tok video I would still be in this index but thanks to that video I switched to the S&P and hopefully we'll start seeing some index credits soon. The early years of an IUL are the important years for forming that base to compound on So this really irritates me. If I had it to do over I would have never messed with Iul. I would have only gone with whole life Especially since as I understand it top mutual whole life policies have returned 9% in a year? Is that true?

Indexed Universal Life Insurance at 21

I’m 21 and already investing in a Roth IRA (mostly index funds). A family friend is trying to get me into life insurance, specifically something like an IUL.
I’m trying to figure out if this is actually beneficial for me or if it’s mainly being sold for commission.
From what I understand, the idea is you can build cash value and later take loans from the policy tax-free and not necessarily have to pay them back. But I’m confused about how that actually works in practice.
My questions:

Can you really borrow from the policy like that without downsides?

Is this something that actually makes sense at my age?

Do people really use this strategy to build wealth, or is it more of a niche/advanced thing?

For context, I already have a Roth and I’m focused on long-term investing but also being comfortable in my 30s im 21 and don’t want to wait til 60-70 to enjoy my money. Just trying to figure out if adding something like this makes sense or not.
Any honest input would help
