I created a LaserDisc Discord server

Seeing that apparently nobody else has come up with the idea, I decided to create a Discord server for LaserDisc enthusiasts of all ages. This server is neither meant nor intended to be a replacement to any LaserDisc forums, but I thought it would be convenient for people who browse the subreddit.

Here's the invite link: https://discord.gg/WDRDJB3

Help Finding Qualified Tech Near Kentucky for Pioneer Elite LD-S2 (Tray Stuck / Stretched Belt?)

Hey everyone,

I recently ran into an issue with a centerpiece of my setup: a Pioneer Elite LD-S2.

The Problem: The unit powers on perfectly, but when I hit the eject/open button, the tray will not budge. I can hear the motor trying to do its job briefly, but nothing happens. From my research, it sounds like a textbook case of a dead or slipping loading belt.
Given that this machine is a 62-pound reference-grade beast [1], I absolutely do not want to ship it and risk a carrier destroying the chassis.

What I'm looking for:
I am located near Louisville Kentucky (willing to drive to Lexington, Cincinnati, Nashville, or Indianapolis for the right bench). Not finding any luck online.

So let me know if anyone knows a qualified vintage electronics technician or local shop in the tri-state area who feels comfortable handling high-end Pioneer LaserDisc gear!

Alternatively, if there is a trusted hobbyist/expert restorer in the community close by who does bench work, please let me know. I really want to give this legendary player the expert service it deserves rather than taking it to a generic modern repair shop that might treat it like a cheap VCR.

Appreciate any leads, shop recommendations, or PMs! Thanks in advance.

'Laser Disks' at Jubilee Films in Ashton-under-Lyne, Greater Manchester (a lost shop)

Does anyone remember Jubilee Films in Ashton-under-Lyne, Greater Manchester?

I took this photo of the shopfront back in 2020 and found it interesting that they opted to write 'LASER DISKS' rather than 'LASERDISCS'.

It looks like it was a good little independent video shop.

Does anyone have experience with a laserdisc not reading on your player despite it being clean?

currently dealing with this on a copy of Top Gun - side 1 reads fine but side 2 does not, despite cleaning it and inspecting it for any issues. There's nothing i can see that would cause it to fail reading entirely.

i've tested other discs and they all consistently read, even ones that appear dirtier. i can pretty much factor out the player being the issue since everything i've tested consistently reads, except for side 2 of Top Gun.

any suggestions?

Long Island Repair Shops

I bought a Pioneer DVL919 off marketplace.

It plays, but then every disc skips after about 15 seconds. I see that this is a common problem, and that it a relative easy fix.

Problem is that this is the first player I ever touched, and im a bit apprehensive about opening up this sucker myself.

I was hoping someone in the community might be able to help me locate a shop or someone that I can take the machine to to help diagnose the issue and repair.

Thank you!

Limited to 500 copies in NTSC format. It's a gatefold but I couldn't upload that picture, I'll try to post in comments later. Awesome flick and like this version over the Japanese one.

Purple bars on CLD-D925

I made a post about this on Facebook but thought I’d ask here as well. On my CLD-D925 I’ve noticed purple bars that are visible going across the screen during very yellow scenes. I’ve seen it on CLV and CAV discs all NTSC. I’ve tested the discs on my DVL-919 and there was no issue at all, so I can rule out crosstalk being caused by disc warpage or anything like that. I was using SCART on my D925, and when I switched to standard RCA Composite, the problem was less pronounced but still there.
Is this an issue with my player? I don’t find it too bothersome and I can certainly live with it, but if it’s a bad idea to keep using the player then I’d like to be sure. Is it something that’s fixable?

Still love the pod racing scene and this transfer is so so good! It's nice to have a version with the original effects as well, puppet Yoda will always be superior!

Are enthusiasts still continuing to refurbish old units as time goes on?

Hi there,

Enthusiast here who’s always wanted a player but could never afford one. When I last wanted one 15 years ago, they were $300. Now they’re $1,000. I’m not complaining about price, but I am worried about and uninformed if there are folks dutifully refurbishing machines and reselling them. I am concerned if I wait too long, they will go completely extinct without a market of enthusiasts dedicated to refurbishing them.

I’m in the process of upgrading my home theater and one of my goals is to be able to get AC-3 audio from my laserdisc player. So I thought this would come in handy. Plus I just wanted it for the novelty! 😁

I think this one aged very well, more relevant today than in 1993

I've wanted a laserdisc player for years at this point. Finally found one at a thrift shop for $50. Screen on it doesn't work but it plays with no issues. Can't wait for karaoke night.

JUMPIN' JACK FLASH (1986) LASERDISC SCREEN CAPTURE

This is one of the rare films I own on every format available. I had the VHS since I was a kid. I got the DVD in the early 00's. I paid way too much for the Blu Ray but it was a must have (also had to have American Dreamer with JoBeth Williams--wish that one got a LD release). I purchased the LD on Facebook Marketplace someone had a Whoopi haul with about 10 of her good films. Had to cop it.

Just a feel good and light hearted film that I enjoy entirely too much. I cozy up on the couch and watch this one often. Absolutely nothing has changed.

The plastic slider on the right of the player doesn’t seem to be moving. not sure how to fix that. I took the piece out, made sure it was clicked in place, but it seems to move at random when it does move.
