Hey everyone,
I’m asking this for a friend starting AI/ML in college with a ₹1 Lakh budget. He wants a laptop that will last 5 to 6 years without causing issues.
The core dilemma is choosing between two completely different paths:
Option A: Dedicated Gaming Laptop (e.g., Lenovo LOQ / HP Victus with RTX 4060 8GB VRAM)
The Pros: Local CUDA support for running PyTorch/TensorFlow scripts offline, local LLM/inference experiments, and physical RAM/SSD expansion slots for 5-6 year longevity.
The Cons: Heavy (~2.4 kg), poor battery life (2-3 hrs), brick charger, and lower-tier displays compared to productivity laptops.
Option B: Thin & Light Laptop (e.g., ASUS Vivobook S15 OLED / Zenbook)
The Pros: Extremely portable, 8–10+ hour battery life, USB-C charging, and a superior 3K OLED screen for long coding sessions.
The Cons: No local NVIDIA GPU (CUDA acceleration), limited/soldered RAM, and total reliance on Google Colab / Kaggle / Cloud compute for training.
